You can automate recovery only after building and testing it for your specific VPS, operating system, and encoder; neither Contabo nor YouTube promises seamless recovery from a VPS network outage. First find whether the failure is local, provider-side, or on the server, then restore the encoder’s connection and verify the event in YouTube Live Control Room. For dependable continuity, separately test a backup encoder rather than assuming a single VPS can reconnect while unreachable.
What “automatic recovery” can—and cannot—mean
A YouTube stream hosted on a Contabo VPS depends on several links: your route to the VPS, the VPS network interface and configuration, the encoder process, and the connection from that encoder to YouTube’s ingest service. A failure at any link can interrupt the stream, but each requires a different response. Contabo’s and YouTube’s guidance supports diagnosis, restart, stream-key checks, and backup-encoder testing; it does not establish a universal script that will restore an unknown VPS and resume every event automatically.
In particular, a server that has lost network reachability cannot reliably receive a remote command to restart its encoder. Recovery may require Contabo’s out-of-band console or rescue access, or provider-side network repair. Automation can restart a process after the machine regains connectivity, but that is not the same as restoring a failed network path.
Diagnose the outage before changing the VPS
1. Check Contabo’s service status
Look for a reported incident or maintenance on Contabo Service Status. If a relevant incident is listed, monitor its updates before changing firewall, route, or interface settings; unnecessary changes can make recovery harder.

2. Test from a second network
Try connecting from mobile data or another independent network. If that works, investigate the original connection, VPN, corporate firewall, DNS, or local routing rather than treating the VPS itself as the likely cause. If a hostname fails but the server’s IP address works, DNS may be involved. Contabo’s connection guidance recommends checking the local path and trying an IP address when DNS is suspected.
3. Check server state and use console access
Review the VPS in the Contabo Customer Panel. For VPS/VDS systems, Contabo documents VNC access as an option when ordinary network access is unavailable. If VNC works while SSH or the streaming application does not, the machine may be running with a firewall, port, interface, or network-configuration problem. Contabo also describes rescue access in its server recovery guide.

4. Inspect routes and interface settings
From console access, check whether the network interface is up and compare the server IP address, subnet, gateway, and routes with the values shown in the Customer Panel. For suspected path loss, Contabo recommends traceroute or MTR and sharing results with support. A nonresponsive intermediate hop alone does not prove packet loss: routers may deprioritize or block diagnostic replies even while forwarding traffic.
Contabo’s unstable-connection troubleshooting covers local, routing, and server-configuration checks. Keep notes on what fails—SSH, VNC, the stream endpoint, or all access—so you can distinguish a reachability problem from an encoder-only failure.

Restore the VPS and reconnect the encoder
Restart only when the evidence supports it
If the operating system is accessible, use its normal restart procedure where appropriate. Contabo lists restart as a possible step, but a power-off from the panel abruptly stops the system and should be a last resort. If normal access is unavailable, use the documented panel or rescue options for the observed failure rather than repeatedly forcing power cycles.
Verify the YouTube connection
After network access returns, confirm that the encoder process is running and configured with the correct YouTube stream URL and stream key. Open YouTube Live Control Room and check for an incoming preview or connected status before treating the stream as recovered. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the stream URL/key and preview-to-go-live flow.

If the encoder reports a startup or key error, use Live Control Room to refresh the stream key and update the encoder with the current key. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide treats key errors as a separate issue; changing a key will not repair a Contabo network outage.
Interpret encoder-side symptoms carefully
OBS notes that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server, not necessarily a defect in OBS itself. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide. A VPS-hosted encoder has the same basic dependency on a functioning route to YouTube, so use network evidence before changing encoder settings without cause.

Prepare failover instead of relying on a single VPS
YouTube advises testing a backup encoder in advance: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming tips for the platform’s failover guidance. This is a resilience test, not a guarantee that one encoder on an unreachable Contabo VPS will recover automatically. A backup that shares the same failed server or network path may share the same failure.
Keep recovery and continuity distinct. Repairing routes or restarting the encoder restores the primary setup; a separately prepared and tested backup may reduce interruption impact. Monitoring can alert an operator that a server is unreachable, but detection by itself does not restore the VPS or keep the stream live.
Preserve a recording, but do not confuse it with continuity
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Check the event’s archive after it ends; a local recording can preserve material if the live session is disrupted. Neither an archive nor a recording re-establishes the live feed. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
