YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats playback for viewers; it does not turn a playlist into a live broadcast. To make a looping YouTube Live stream, an encoder must send a continuous feed to YouTube. Use the playlist as the encoder’s media source, configure that source to repeat, then connect the encoder to a YouTube Live event using its stream URL and key. YouTube’s own help pages explain the Live Control Room and encoder connection, but do not specify exact OBS playlist-looping menus, so confirm the steps for your encoder version and test the complete loop before going live.
What “looping a YouTube playlist” means
YouTube has two different playlist-related features that are easy to confuse:
- Viewer playlist loop: repeats playback on YouTube for someone watching a regular video playlist. It does not create a live event or transmit a feed to Live Control Room. YouTube’s playlist loop instructions describe this viewer control.
- Live encoder feed: software or hardware sends audio and video to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and stream key. To make that feed repeat, configure the encoder’s media source to play your files or program continuously. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented here.
There is no documented YouTube Studio setting that converts a viewer playlist directly into a live stream. The repeating playback must happen at the source feeding the encoder.
Before you set up the stream
Check channel eligibility and activation time
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete that step well before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming overview also says creators must be at least 16, with separate conditions for younger participants. See YouTube’s current eligibility and live-streaming guidance.

Prepare a rights-cleared playlist
Only include recordings you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights to use content on Google services, including music licensing rights where applicable. A video’s presence in a YouTube playlist—or its availability to watch on YouTube—does not establish permission to rebroadcast it in a live stream. Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable laws. Review the YouTube Terms of Service and the live-streaming guidance before choosing material.
Choose an encoder that can repeat your source
YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders. The encoder, not the YouTube playlist player, must supply the continuous program. Before committing to a workflow, verify that your chosen encoder can play your local media or playlist in sequence and repeat it, and test what happens at the end of the final item. YouTube’s documentation does not establish one encoder as required or provide universal playlist-source instructions.

Create and connect the YouTube Live event
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. Create a new event or select an existing stream in Live Control Room.
- Set the event details. Choose the title, visibility and schedule as needed. YouTube supports public, private and unlisted settings. If you schedule the stream, leave time for the preview and event handoff before the advertised start.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In the event’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding server and key fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not post it, show it on screen, or share it publicly.
- Set up the repeating media source in your encoder. Add the media or playlist source you intend to broadcast, enable repeat or looping using that encoder’s current controls, and check that both picture and sound continue across the transition from the last item to the first. The exact control names and behavior depend on the encoder and version; YouTube’s documentation does not verify specific OBS playlist-source steps.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives a picture and audio signal. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to click Go live in Live Control Room once the preview appears.
- Check the public watch page. Once broadcasting, verify that the event is available at its intended visibility and monitor the audio and video. YouTube recommends checking the stream on your channel or watch page and on mobile devices.
Test the loop and plan the broadcast
Confirm the repeat behavior before the event
Run the encoder through the end of the final playlist item and into the beginning of the first. Watch and listen for a gap, black frame, missing audio, abrupt volume change or a source that stops instead of repeating. A playlist that appears to be in order in the encoder may still need source-specific configuration; a short end-to-end test is the way to verify the actual output.
Allow network headroom
YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth headroom of 20%. That is a recommendation, not a stability guarantee; the available upload capacity must accommodate the stream and any backup stream in use. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Start early and monitor
YouTube’s encoder tips recommend setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. Preview the incoming feed, check audio and video, test failover if applicable, and keep an eye on local archive growth. These are operational recommendations, not a promise of uninterrupted streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Know the archive limit
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive outcome for streams lasting longer than 12 hours. Follow the current Live Control Room controls to end the broadcast when intended. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: Check that the encoder is sending to the correct event’s stream URL and that the matching stream key is entered correctly. Keep the key private; replace it if it may have been exposed.
- The event is not available when expected: Check the visibility and schedule in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview, then use Go live in Live Control Room.
- The playlist stops at the end: The encoder’s source is not repeating, or its playlist behavior differs from what you expected. Check the installed encoder’s source settings and test another full cycle before relying on it for a long broadcast.
- There is a gap, black frame or silent transition: Inspect the media files and source transition behavior, then run a full test cycle while monitoring both picture and audio. The YouTube playlist Loop control will not correct an encoder-source transition.
- The stream drops or stutters: Check the upload connection and leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Confirm that any backup stream is included in the bandwidth plan and test failover in advance where applicable.
- A stream is interrupted or restricted over content: Review whether you have the rights to every recording and music track, and check the channel’s live-streaming eligibility and applicable YouTube policies.
