To capture a website at mobile width with Browserless, send a POST request to its /screenshot REST endpoint, set the viewport width and height in CSS pixels, and inspect the returned image to confirm the page rendered as intended. Use a viewport capture for the first screen, fullPage for the document, or a clip or selector for one region. Mobile emulation is optional: a narrow viewport sets responsive layout width, while mobile properties add behaviors such as touch support.
What you need before making the request
- A Browserless account and API token from its account dashboard. The token authenticates the request; keep it private and use a placeholder in examples or client-facing code.
- The page URL and the mobile CSS viewport dimensions relevant to the client’s review.
- A decision about whether the deliverable is the visible screen, the full page, or a cropped region.
Browserless documents the REST screenshot request as an HTTP POST to /screenshot, authenticated with the account token as a query parameter, with JSON request data and an image response. See the Browserless Screenshot API and its REST APIs introduction.

Example request
This cURL example uses a fictional token and example URL. Replace both with the values for your job. The viewport is 390 by 844 CSS pixels; fullPage is false so the result represents the visible viewport rather than the whole document.
curl -X POST "https://production-sfo.browserless.io/screenshot?token=YOUR_API_TOKEN"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
-d '{
"url": "https://example.com",
"options": {
"type": "png",
"fullPage": false,
"viewport": {
"width": 390,
"height": 844,
"deviceScaleFactor": 1
}
}
}'
--output mobile-viewport.png
Browserless documents POST /screenshot as returning an image response, including PNG, JPEG or WebP output. Confirm the exact endpoint hostname and accepted request fields in your account’s current Browserless documentation; this example uses the documented production endpoint pattern and screenshot options. For the API’s request schema and behavior, see Screenshot API.

Choose the viewport dimensions deliberately
width and height are CSS pixels, not a promise about the final file’s physical pixel dimensions. A deviceScaleFactor above 1 can produce a raster image with more pixels while preserving the same CSS layout width. When reporting results to a client, distinguish the emulated CSS viewport from the output image dimensions.
Browserless’ guidance for Browserless as a Platform (BAP) emphasizes setting the viewport before capture because a responsive page renders according to the width it receives. See Screenshots and PDFs with BAP.

Choose the capture boundary
| Capture option | Use it when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
Viewport screenshot (fullPage: false) |
The client needs the initial visible screen at the chosen mobile width. | Captures the viewport, not the entire document. |
Full-page screenshot (fullPage: true) |
The client needs the page from top to bottom. | Captures the document’s full height; long pages may need scrolling first to trigger lazy-loaded content. |
clip |
The deliverable is a fixed rectangular part of the page. | Crops to a defined region rather than the whole rendered page. |
| Selector capture | The client wants one component, such as a pricing panel or navigation menu. | Browserless waits for the selected element and crops around its bounding box. |
These options answer different questions: viewport versus full-page determines how much of the document is included, while clip or selector capture targets a specific area. Browserless documents screenshot options in its Screenshot API and screenshot mutation reference.
Decide whether mobile emulation is needed
A mobile-width viewport is often enough to check responsive layout: it tells the browser how many CSS pixels wide the page is. Add mobile settings when the page or test specifically depends on mobile browser behavior. Browserless documents viewport fields including deviceScaleFactor, isMobile, isLandscape and hasTouch; it also documents Android OS emulation. See the /scrape API reference and OS emulation.

- Phone sticker, laptop sticker, car sticker, water bottle sticker, and so many more applications!
- Peel & stick, simple application, reusable
- Made in the USA
- Use
isMobilewhen you need mobile emulation rather than only a narrow layout viewport. - Use
hasTouchwhen touch capability matters to the page’s behavior. - Use
isLandscapewhen testing a landscape mobile orientation. - Use
deviceScaleFactorto affect raster density; do not mistake it for a change to CSS viewport width.
Emulation is still browser rendering, not evidence that the page was tested on a physical Indian handset, mobile network, or carrier. If the client needs those conditions, arrange a real-device test separately.
Wait for the page state you need
Capturing immediately can miss content that loads after navigation. Browserless supports waits for events, functions, selectors or timeouts. Choose a condition tied to the content the client needs rather than using an arbitrary delay when a specific page state can be identified.

- For full-page captures with lazy-loaded images, Browserless says scrolling the page can trigger loading; pair
scrollPage: truewith full-page capture when the whole long page matters.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the image before sending it to the client
An HTTP response that contains an image does not by itself prove the intended page rendered correctly. Open the output and check the layout, page boundary, expected elements and loaded images. Browserless identifies blank or white captures, CAPTCHA pages, 403 or access-denied screens and missing elements as signs that a site may be blocking automation. Report the observed result rather than presenting a blocked or incomplete capture as a faithful mobile rendering. Browserless documents an /unblock endpoint, but its availability does not guarantee success for a particular website; see the Screenshot API.

Troubleshooting Browserless mobile screenshots
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or try |
|---|---|---|
| The layout still looks like desktop | The viewport may not have been set before capture, or the requested width may not trigger the site’s mobile breakpoint. | Set the viewport dimensions in the screenshot request before capture and confirm the CSS-pixel width is the intended one. |
| The image dimensions do not match the viewport numbers | The viewport uses CSS pixels, while deviceScaleFactor can affect raster output dimensions. |
Check both the configured CSS viewport and device scale factor; describe each accurately. |
| Images are absent on a long capture | Lazy-loaded content may not have been requested before capture. | Use full-page capture with scrollPage: true, then inspect whether the relevant images appeared. |
| The screenshot is blank or shows CAPTCHA/access denied | The site may be detecting or blocking automation. | Do not treat the image as a successful rendering. Record the block or failure and consult Browserless guidance; an unblock workflow may not work on every site. |
| A specific component is missing | The component may not have loaded by capture time, or the selector may not match the rendered element. | Wait for a relevant selector or page condition and verify the selector against the page’s actual markup. |
