You can use OBS on a Mac to send a continuous live feed to YouTube, but a long-running stream is not the same as a dependable, complete YouTube replay. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If the archive matters, plan sessions shorter than 12 hours and record a local backup.
The steps below use YouTube Studio and OBS’s general encoder workflow. Menu labels can vary by OBS version, and YouTube’s guidance cited here does not establish Mac-specific settings for every macOS or OBS release.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s stated minimum age requirement of 16. Check current eligibility at YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Install and open OBS on the Mac you intend to use. The Mac, its power supply, network connection and content source must remain available for the stream to continue.
- Have a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your selected video bitrate. A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful choice where available; a compatible USB-C Ethernet adapter may be needed on a Mac without an Ethernet port.
- Decide whether the priority is one continuous live feed or a reliable YouTube replay. For the latter, schedule shorter sessions and make a local recording.
Set up a YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup workflow.
- In OBS, open the stream settings. Choose YouTube if it is offered in the service list. Otherwise, use the custom server option and enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Configure the video and audio sources in OBS. Confirm that the intended picture and sound appear in the encoder preview; a video-only check is not enough for a music, talk or other audio-led stream.
- Start streaming in OBS. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then bring the event live in YouTube Studio when the selected workflow requires it. YouTube’s exact control flow depends on the stream setup.
Choose settings for a stable feed
Start with YouTube’s encoder guidance, then test the actual Mac, network, audio and moving picture you plan to stream. A bitrate that exceeds the connection’s sustained upload capacity can cause dropped frames or disconnections; lowering it or choosing a lower resolution or frame rate can produce a steadier feed.

Run a representative test with both audio and movement, not just a static screen. Monitor stream health and adjust if the feed is unstable. Do not assume the best setting is the highest resolution: choose the clearest output your upload connection can sustain reliably.

Plan for archives and DVR
YouTube replay is not assured for a stream over 12 hours
YouTube says a livestream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local archive backup. That is a qualified warning, not a claim that every stream over the limit will be lost. Still, if a complete YouTube replay is important, keep each session under 12 hours and record locally as a second safeguard. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Very long streams may have limited rewind
YouTube says DVR rewind capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek back to a point before the stream went live. A 24/7 feed should therefore not be presented as a guaranteed, fully rewindable recording. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Check the local recording while live
If you rely on an OBS recording for the archive, verify that the recording is active and that its file is growing during the broadcast. Keep enough local storage available for the planned session; the sources cited here do not specify a universal file size, drive format or capacity, so estimate from a test recording at your chosen settings.
Keep the stream running and test recovery
OBS on a Mac is still dependent on that Mac and its surroundings. A computer shutdown, power interruption, network outage or encoder problem can interrupt a stream. Reconnect settings alone are not a complete continuity or redundancy plan, and the guidance cited here does not establish a guaranteed reconnection time or unattended restart procedure for macOS.

- Monitor audio, video and YouTube stream health throughout operation.
- Check that any local archive recording is still progressing.
- If continuous availability is important, test the actual recovery arrangement rather than assuming it works. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover; its example is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and confirm playback rolls over to a backup encoder. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Use Ethernet where practical, but remember that a cable or adapter cannot prevent ISP outages, power loss or encoder failure.
Troubleshooting common problems
OBS connects, but YouTube does not show the expected preview
- Confirm that the selected event in YouTube Studio is the one whose server URL and stream key you entered in OBS.
- Check the key for mistakes, and replace it in Studio and OBS if it was exposed or copied incorrectly.
- Wait for the encoder preview and read the Live Control Room status before taking the event live.
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections
OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnects as possible signs of network trouble between the computer and the ingest server. A bitrate the connection cannot sustain is another likely cause. Test a lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate, and use a wired connection if available. Refer to OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
The stream is live, but audio is missing or wrong
Check the audio source and meter in OBS, then verify sound in the YouTube preview. Test with the same sources and playback conditions intended for the live session; do not rely on a video-only preview check.

The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent
For streams longer than 12 hours, YouTube says capture may not happen at all. For archive-dependent use, schedule shorter sessions and maintain a local recording rather than relying on one uninterrupted YouTube replay.
