Build the dashboard as a small web app with a backend between the browser, the machine running FFmpeg, and YouTube’s Live Streaming API. Keep two separate status signals: whether FFmpeg is running locally, and whether YouTube reports a healthy incoming feed. Add start/stop controls only after read-only monitoring works reliably.
How the dashboard fits together
FFmpeg runs on a machine you control and publishes audio and video to a YouTube ingest endpoint. Separately, YouTube exposes two resources: a liveStream for the incoming feed and a liveBroadcast for the viewer-facing event. They describe related but different things.
- FFmpeg process status: whether the local encoder process is running or has exited. Obtain this from the host or its process supervisor.
- Incoming-feed status: YouTube’s
liveStream.status, includingstreamStatusandhealthStatus. - Broadcast status: event details and lifecycle state from the
liveBroadcastresource.
A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. Likewise, an existing broadcast does not prove your local encoder is publishing. Give each signal its own label and timestamp rather than combining them into one green “live” indicator.
A modest design has four parts: a browser UI, a backend, a local process supervisor or status adapter, and a YouTube API client. The backend gathers and normalizes the signals, then serves them to the browser. YouTube’s references explain the API resources and their roles; they do not require a particular web framework or process manager.

Build the dashboard in stages
1. Make a read-only status page
Start without controls. Show the local FFmpeg state, a recent sanitized excerpt of its stderr, the selected broadcast title and state, the incoming stream state, any reported health issues, and when each status was last checked. Label local and YouTube-derived information separately. A timestamp helps users spot stale values after a failed poll or expired authorization.
2. Publish to YouTube’s ingest details
FFmpeg documents RTMP output syntax and a publishing example in its documentation. YouTube’s liveStream resource provides ingestion addresses and a stream name. Configure FFmpeg with the ingest details for the stream you intend to use; treat the stream name or key as a secret. Do not place it in browser code, a page URL, or client-visible logs.

FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly and corresponds to the newest revision. Check options against the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your host. The sources for this guide do not establish current YouTube bitrate or codec recommendations, so choose encoder settings from current YouTube guidance for your ingest protocol and verify that your FFmpeg build supports them.
3. Add authorized YouTube API reads
Use OAuth authorization for account-specific broadcast listing. YouTube’s liveBroadcasts.list method documents read scopes, including youtube.readonly. Request only the scopes the dashboard’s selected features need, and keep OAuth refresh tokens on the backend.

Read the liveStream resource for incoming-feed status and health, and the liveBroadcast resource for event information and lifecycle state. YouTube stream states include active, created, error, inactive, and ready. Display the actual state and any health issues rather than flattening everything into a binary indicator.
4. Add process controls only after monitoring is dependable
If the page should start or stop FFmpeg, the backend—not the browser—must perform that work. Use a fixed server-side command template, validate identifiers passed from the UI, and manage the process through a supervisor or similarly controlled mechanism. Avoid constructing shell commands from arbitrary browser input. Show explicit transitions such as “starting,” “running,” “stopping,” and “exited,” and confirm the resulting local process state.

The reference material does not prescribe a programming language, operating system, hosting model, or process manager. Choose those to fit the machine that runs FFmpeg and your deployment requirements; the status separation and secret-handling boundaries apply regardless of stack.

An optional chat metric is statistics.totalChatCount on live broadcasts. YouTube documents it under visibility and chat conditions; it may change during a broadcast and should not be assumed to be present or retained after completion.

Make the states useful when they disagree
- FFmpeg exited: show the local process as stopped or failed and include a sanitized recent log excerpt. Do not infer YouTube’s feed state from the process state alone.
- FFmpeg is running, but YouTube reports inactive: show both values. Check the configured ingest address and stream name, then inspect FFmpeg’s output and the YouTube health details.
- The feed is active but has health issues: display the reported issues as well as the active state; active does not erase configuration warnings.
- The broadcast is not live: distinguish its lifecycle state from the incoming feed. The stream and broadcast are separate resources.
- The API check fails: show the last successful poll time and a clear authorization or API error state. Do not leave an old successful status looking current.
Choose a monitoring and stream lifecycle model

YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide describes the relationship between stream and broadcast resources, including stream reuse. A broadcast represents a distinct event; a stream represents the incoming feed.
