For one local video, use OBS’s built-in Media Source and turn on Loop. For a playlist of local files, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist. VLC Video adds playlist and shuffle controls, but requires VLC to be installed with the same architecture as OBS. Either source plays media inside your OBS production; OBS separately sends the encoded feed to YouTube.
Choose by what you need to play
| Need | Recommended source | Loop setting | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local file | Media Source | Loop, off by default | Built into OBS; straightforward single-file setup |
| Cycle through multiple local files | VLC Video | Loop Playlist, on by default | Playlist and shuffle support; VLC installation required |
These controls and defaults are documented in OBS’s Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022. It describes Media Source support for local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, as well as audio such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
Loop a single file with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene that should contain the video. In the Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source or select an existing one, then choose the local file you want to play.
- Enable Loop. It is off by default, so without enabling it the file does not repeat after playback completes.
- Review the other playback options according to the scene’s behavior. Restart playback when source becomes active defaults on. Show nothing when playback ends also defaults on, and Close file when inactive defaults off. These settings do not replace Loop: they govern activation, end-of-playback display, and inactive-file handling.
Media Source is the simpler choice when the production needs one repeating file rather than a playlist. The OBS guide does not document playlist controls for this source.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC before configuring the source. OBS requires VLC for VLC Video to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the OBS scene, click + in the Sources dock and choose VLC Video.
- Add the local media files to the playlist in the source properties.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart the playlist after it runs out of media. This option defaults on. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the files played in a randomized order; shuffle defaults off.
- Set the source’s visibility behavior deliberately. Its documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible. Choose a different behavior if the source should continue or pause while hidden.
VLC Video is similar to Media Source but adds playlist support and VLC-backed media compatibility. Its properties also include visibility behavior, network caching (the guide lists 400 ms), and audio and subtitle track settings. Those extra options are useful only when the production needs them; a single local file does not require VLC Video’s playlist controls.

What “not visible” means in OBS
Visibility refers to whether the source is shown in the OBS scene, not whether the OBS application window is on screen. You can show or hide an individual source with its eye control in the Sources dock. With VLC Video’s default behavior, hiding the source stops playback, and showing it again restarts playback. Account for that if you switch scenes or hide the source during a live production. OBS explains source visibility in its Sources Guide, also dated January 11, 2022.
Keep media playback separate from the YouTube connection
The OBS source determines what media appears in the production. The stream URL and stream key configure the encoder connection that sends the composed OBS feed to YouTube; they do not determine whether a source loops. In OBS, configure YouTube’s encoder destination and key separately from the Media Source or VLC Video properties. YouTube describes these connection settings in Manage live stream settings.

Limits to keep in mind
- The OBS documentation establishes the available settings and their defaults, not that changing playlist entries during a live stream avoids a reset, playback gap, or interruption. Do not assume live edits are seamless.
- The documented setup here uses local media files. The cited OBS pages do not establish whether a YouTube watch-page URL can be played directly by either source.
- The comparison is about playback sources inside OBS, not a measured reliability or performance contest. The official documentation provides no comparative reliability, performance, popularity, or usage figures.
Or let it run in the cloud
