To capture an entire page with Browserless, send a POST request to its REST /screenshot endpoint with options.fullPage: true, or connect a Node.js Puppeteer or Playwright script to a Browserless browser and set fullPage: true on the screenshot call. For pages that load content as you scroll, enable Browserless REST’s top-level scrollPage: true as well: full-page dimensions alone do not make lazy-loaded content appear.

How do I take a screenshot with the Browserless REST API?

The REST API is the most direct option when you need to render a URL and save the returned image. You need a Browserless API token and the endpoint host assigned or documented for your account. Browserless’s quickstart illustrates a production-region host; do not assume that hostname applies to every account or deployment. See the Browserless Screenshot API documentation for the current request schema.

  1. Set your token in the environment as BROWSERLESS_TOKEN, rather than writing it into source control.
  2. Send a JSON POST request with the destination in url and fullPage: true inside options.
  3. Read the response as binary data and save it with an extension matching the requested image type.
const token = process.env.BROWSERLESS_TOKEN;
if (!token) throw new Error("Set BROWSERLESS_TOKEN first");

const endpoint = `https://production-sfo.browserless.io/screenshot?token=${encodeURIComponent(token)}`;
const response = await fetch(endpoint, {
  method: "POST",
  headers: {
    "Content-Type": "application/json",
    "Cache-Control": "no-cache",
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    url: "https://example.com/",
    options: {
      fullPage: true,
      type: "png",
    },
  }),
});

if (!response.ok) {
  throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${response.status} ${await response.text()}`);
}

const image = Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer());
const { writeFile } = await import("node:fs/promises");
await writeFile("screenshot.png", image);

This uses Node.js’s built-in fetch and file-system APIs; the request shape follows Browserless’s documented REST example. The regional endpoint is illustrative, so substitute the host documented for your account. Keep the token private and avoid logging the full request URL, which contains the token.

How do I capture content that loads below the fold?

A page can be taller than the initial viewport while still leaving images or sections unloaded. Lazy-loading sites often fetch content only when it approaches the visible area. Browserless recommends setting its top-level scrollPage: true together with options.fullPage: true for this case.

  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
body: JSON.stringify({
  url: "https://example.com/long-page",
  scrollPage: true,
  options: {
    fullPage: true,
    type: "png",
  },
}),

scrollPage is a REST request property, not an option nested under options. Scrolling can prompt lazy content to render, but it cannot guarantee that every site-specific script, image, or dynamic update will finish successfully.

When should I use a connected Puppeteer or Playwright session?

Use a browser session when your script needs a page object to navigate, wait, or interact before taking the screenshot. Browserless documents both Puppeteer and Playwright connection patterns. The two libraries use different connection endpoints and navigation wait values; use the example for the library you choose rather than mixing their settings. See Browserless’s Node.js screenshot examples.

  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Puppeteer

Install puppeteer-core in your project. This example connects to Browserless, navigates, captures the full page, and closes the session even if navigation or capture throws an error.

import puppeteer from "puppeteer-core";

const token = process.env.BROWSERLESS_TOKEN;
if (!token) throw new Error("Set BROWSERLESS_TOKEN first");

const browser = await puppeteer.connect({
  browserWSEndpoint: `wss://production-sfo.browserless.io?token=${encodeURIComponent(token)}`,
});

try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto("https://example.com/", { waitUntil: "networkidle2" });
  await page.screenshot({ path: "screenshot.png", fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Playwright

For Playwright, install playwright-core and follow Browserless’s Chromium Playwright WebSocket example. Browserless’s documented example uses waitUntil: "networkidle"; that is a Playwright navigation setting, not Puppeteer’s "networkidle2".

  await page.goto("https://example.com/", { waitUntil: "networkidle" });
  await page.screenshot({ path: "screenshot.png", fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Check Browserless’s current example for the exact WebSocket path and connection method supported for your account before deploying, since hosted endpoints can change. Closing the browser in finally releases the session during both successful and failed runs; it does not itself ensure the page loaded or the capture succeeded.

Which capture settings should I use?

The correct placement of a setting depends on the interface. For the REST endpoint, selector is a top-level field alongside url; screenshot options such as fullPage, output type, and clip settings belong in the documented options shape. In Puppeteer, fullPage is a screenshot method option. Confirm the schema for the interface you are calling.

Need REST API approach Browser-session approach
Whole document Set options.fullPage: true. Call page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }).
Lazy-loaded content Set top-level scrollPage: true as well as options.fullPage: true. Prepare or scroll the page through the page object as needed; the documented examples do not establish a universal lazy-load procedure.
One element Use the REST selector field as documented. Use the browser library’s element or locator screenshot method.
Fixed rectangular area Use the REST clip option in the documented options object. Use the library’s clip or capture options.
Output format Browserless documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP for the current REST screenshot API. Puppeteer documents PNG as the default; its quality setting does not apply to PNG.

For REST requests, Browserless also documents viewport, clip, device scale factor, quality, and selector capture options. Its REST endpoint can render inline html instead of navigating to a url; do not send both fields in the same request. That is useful for generated markup, not necessary for an ordinary URL screenshot.

Do not copy arguments from Browserless Query Language (BQL) into a REST call. BQL is a separate interface; its screenshot reference lists its own arguments, including waitForImages, and documents fullPage as false by default and a screenshot timeout default of 30 seconds. Those BQL details do not define REST request behavior.

REST request or browser session: which route fits?

Consideration REST screenshot request Connected browser
Integration shape A compact request/response operation that returns image bytes. A browser and page object that your script can use before capture.
Page preparation Use documented request properties such as scrolling and capture options. Navigate and perform page-level preparation or interaction in code.
Good fit A straightforward “render this URL and save an image” job. A workflow that needs more control over navigation or interaction.
Cleanup Handle the HTTP response and errors in your request code. Close the browser session in a finally block.

Why are images or content missing from the capture?

  • Only the viewport appears: confirm that fullPage is enabled and placed in the right location for the route you use. Puppeteer’s screenshot option defaults to false, so omitting it captures without requesting a full-page image.
  • Below-the-fold images or sections are absent: try the REST combination of top-level scrollPage: true and options.fullPage: true. A full-page canvas does not by itself trigger lazy loading.
  • The wrong region appears: use the selector capture for a specific element or a clip rectangle for a fixed region. Check whether the selector is a REST top-level field or a library-specific argument.
  • The image type or quality is unexpected: request a supported REST format and use the matching file extension. Puppeteer’s quality values range from 0 to 100 for supported lossy formats; they do not affect PNG.
  • The page appears blocked, blank, or unlike a normal browser visit: Browserless notes that blank images, CAPTCHA pages, or divergent content can indicate automation blocking. Treat this as a site-access issue to investigate; a screenshot service cannot be assumed to bypass a site’s controls.
  • A connected session remains open after an error: put browser.close() in a finally block so cleanup runs after failures as well as successful captures.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-call URL capture, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from a GET request. Its API accepts Browserless-style parameter names, which can make switching easier. Use your ScreenshotNeo API key and see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`ScreenshotNeo request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
const { writeFile } = await import("node:fs/promises");
await writeFile("shot.webp", image);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with the response indicating the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Browserless return the screenshot as an image file in the REST API?

Yes. The REST screenshot endpoint returns image data in its response; read the response body as binary rather than as JSON.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Browserless to screenshot generated HTML instead of a live URL?

Yes. The REST API documents an html input for rendered markup, but do not include both html and url in the same request.
