A screenshot call alone does not guarantee a lazy-loaded iframe has loaded.
Why a lazy-loaded iframe is missing from a screenshot
A page can defer loading an iframe until it is near the visible area. If the frame is far below the fold when your capture runs, it may still be blank or not yet navigated. Lazy loading is supported for iframes in modern browsers; web.dev reports support beginning with Chrome 77, Edge 79, Firefox 121, and Safari 16.4. Those are compatibility figures reported by web.dev, not a new test of every browser configuration. web.dev’s iframe lazy-loading guide explains the behavior.
Google Search Central’s guidance is to ensure relevant content loads when it becomes visible in the viewport. Google’s lazy-loading guidance states: “To ensure that Google sees all content on your page, make sure your lazy-loading implementation loads all relevant content whenever it is visible in the viewport.”
Capture a lazy iframe with Playwright
Use the Playwright version installed in your project and consult its matching documentation. The example below scrolls the iframe into view, waits for its frame document to reach the load state, and captures the iframe element. Replace the URL and selector with values from the page you are permitted to capture.

A frame’s document load does not necessarily mean a particular application widget or late-rendered image is ready. If the page has a reliable target-specific signal, wait for it instead—for example, a selector that appears only when the embedded content is usable:

Capture with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s element screenshot method attempts to scroll a hidden element into view. For a lazy frame, make that step explicit, then wait for a meaningful ready signal before capturing. The following JavaScript example waits for the iframe element and its navigation, then saves the iframe’s rendered box.

}Navigation may already have completed by the time the frame handle is obtained; in that case, waiting for a page-specific selector is more useful than requiring another navigation event. Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() and ElementHandle.screenshot(). Its element screenshot guide notes that it tries to scroll a hidden element into view.

Choose between a frame, viewport, and full-page screenshot
- Iframe element: Use an element screenshot when you need the rendered frame box without the surrounding page. Check that the element’s dimensions cover the content you want.
- Viewport: Use a viewport screenshot when the frame’s visible placement and surrounding page context matter. Scroll the frame into view before capture.
- Full page: Use a full-page screenshot when you need the page beyond the viewport. Do not treat full-page capture as a universal lazy-load trigger: the frame may still need to be brought near the viewport and allowed to render before capture.
Playwright supports page and element capture; Puppeteer also offers page and element screenshot methods. The appropriate choice depends on whether the desired output is the frame itself or the complete page and on what readiness signal the site exposes.
Cross-origin frames and embedding restrictions
If the parent page cannot read the iframe’s DOM, check whether the iframe is cross-origin. The browser’s same-origin policy restricts script access to a frame’s content. MDN documents that contentDocument returns a document only when the iframe and parent are same-origin, and returns null otherwise: HTMLIFrameElement.contentDocument and MDN’s iframe reference.

A cross-origin frame can still be visible in a screenshot even when the parent page cannot inspect its internal DOM. In that case, wait for a signal available from the parent page or use the known iframe URL and visible rendering behavior rather than trying to query inaccessible frame content. If the third-party site blocks embedding or applies sandbox restrictions, automation does not bypass that policy; use a capture route the site permits.
Troubleshoot a blank, incomplete, or clipped capture
- The frame is blank: Confirm the iframe selector matches an attached element, scroll it into view, and wait for its document or a visible target inside it to be ready. Lazy loading may defer offscreen frames until they approach the viewport.
- The iframe exists but has no content frame: Check whether it has navigated yet and whether the page inserts or replaces the iframe dynamically. Wait for the actual frame and then for the content condition you need.
- The parent cannot find an inner selector: Check whether the frame is cross-origin. Parent-page DOM access is restricted by the same-origin policy; use a parent-visible signal or a permitted alternative.
- The embed refuses to load: Inspect the site’s actual embedding behavior and any sandbox or third-party restrictions. A screenshot tool cannot override the site’s policy.
- The capture cuts off content: An iframe-element screenshot captures the frame’s box, not necessarily all content reachable within a separately scrolling embedded document. Adjust the viewport or clip for the frame box, or capture the permitted embedded content by an appropriate route.
- The result varies between runs: Replace a short fixed sleep with an observable condition tied to the target, such as expected text, a known URL, or an application-ready selector. For content that has no exposed signal, choose a realistic timeout and inspect the resulting capture.
