Chrome DevTools can capture the full page’s dimensions without causing every off-screen image to load first. A full-page screenshot records the page’s rendered state; images marked loading="lazy" may still be waiting for the browser to bring them near the viewport. Scroll through the page, let the image requests finish, and then capture again.
Why a full-page capture can still have blank image areas
Capturing the whole document and loading all of its content are separate operations. In Device Mode, Chrome DevTools’ More options > Capture a full size screenshot command captures content outside the visible viewport. It does not guarantee that every deferred image has been fetched and rendered. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation describes the full-size capture; MDN’s image reference explains that loading="lazy" defers fetching until the browser judges an image close enough to the viewport.
The browser-calculated distance is not a fixed threshold you can assume for every image or page. A screenshot can therefore include the page’s full height while preserving a blank, blurred, or placeholder area where an image has not loaded yet.
The page load event is not an all-images-ready signal
Native lazy-loaded images may still be pending when the page’s load event fires. MDN notes that lazy-loaded images are excluded from the eager-image basis for that event. Check the image itself rather than treating window.onload as proof that every image is ready. MDN’s lazy-loading guide describes this behavior and the image complete property.

Some sites need an interaction before an image gets a source
A site may implement lazy loading with JavaScript rather than relying only on the browser’s native loading attribute. For example, it may wait for scrolling or an intersection event before assigning the real image URL. In that case, taking a static full-page screenshot does not substitute for triggering the site’s loading behavior.
Make the missing images load before you capture
- Open Device Mode. In Chrome DevTools, open Device Mode, then choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot. This is the direct full-page capture command; it captures beyond the visible viewport, but does not by itself ensure deferred images have loaded. See Chrome’s Device Mode instructions.
- Return to the page and scroll down in sections. Bring the missing images near the visible viewport and give the browser time to fetch and render them. Scrolling can trigger native lazy loading and site-specific scroll or intersection handlers.
- Inspect an affected image in the Console. Select the image element and check its
loading,src,currentSrc, andcompletevalues. Acompletevalue offalsemeans that image has not finished loading; it does not, on its own, identify the cause. A lazy image may also have no final URL assigned yet. - Check whether the image request ran and succeeded. In the Network panel, find the image request and check its status. To relate page appearance to loading activity, enable Capture screenshots in the Network panel and reload. Chrome documents correlating screenshots taken during loading with network requests in its Network features reference.
- Capture again after the images render. If the site uses custom JavaScript loading, verify that the needed scroll or intersection trigger occurred before taking the new full-size screenshot.
Diagnose the page rather than guessing
Use the Network panel to distinguish a request that has not started from one that started and failed. If the request completed but the image still is not visible, inspect the element’s rendered state and the site’s behavior; a completed request alone does not establish that the image appears in the screenshot. These checks are complementary: full-size capture addresses page extent, scrolling and waiting address viewport-triggered loading, and Network screenshots help diagnose timing. Results depend on the page’s markup, CSS, JavaScript, network conditions, viewport, and Chrome version; a missing image is not proof of a universal DevTools defect.

Common causes and fixes
- The image has not been requested: Scroll it near the viewport and wait. If the site uses custom JavaScript, trigger the interaction it expects.
- The request is pending: Allow it time to finish, then check whether the image renders before recapturing.
- The request failed: Inspect its Network status and diagnose the failed request; taking another screenshot without resolving the load failure will not make the image available.
completeis false: The image has not finished loading. Check its URL and the Network panel; the property alone does not explain why it is incomplete.- The page’s
loadevent already fired: That event does not prove native lazy images are ready. Inspect the specific images instead.
