Before saving, check the print preview; afterward, open the PDF and confirm it contains the intended first and last posts in the right order. Infinite scrolling means an export can finish successfully even when some posts never loaded.
Load the full range of posts before printing
- Open the exact thread. Sign in first if the forum requires an account to view its posts.
- Identify the first post you want to include. Scroll down in stages from there, waiting for each batch to appear before continuing. On many forums, reaching the loading boundary triggers the next batch.
- If posts are inside a scrollable panel within the page, scroll that panel—not just the browser window.
- Continue until the thread ends or the forum stops loading the range you need. Check that both the intended first and last posts are visible and that there is no loading error or unexpected stop.
Scrolling is a practical method, not a guarantee: forum implementations differ. If earlier posts disappear when you scroll back up, the forum may be reusing a limited set of page elements. In that case, a one-shot capture may not contain the whole discussion. Look for the forum’s own export or explicit pagination, or use a site-specific browser automation workflow that saves each loaded segment and assembles the record.
Save the thread with your browser’s print-to-PDF command
- Open the browser’s Print command and select its PDF destination. Firefox labels the destination “Save to PDF.”
- Review the preview before saving. Check for missing posts, awkward scaling, clipped text, and an unexpected page range.
- Adjust the available print controls as needed. Firefox provides settings for orientation, page range, paper size, scale, margins, headers and footers, and backgrounds. Print styling can make a page look different from its on-screen version; Mozilla documents this caveat in its Firefox printing help.
- Save the PDF, open it, and inspect the first and last intended posts, their sequence, page breaks, timestamps, usernames, and links.
The export dialog completing does not establish that a dynamically loaded thread was complete. Review the saved document itself.
Choose the capture route that fits the thread

Automate a PDF with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API says that page.pdf() generates a PDF using print CSS. You must first navigate in an authorized browser context and implement loading steps appropriate to the forum; there is no universal infinite-scroll recipe in the general API reference.

Here is a minimal runnable Node.js example for a page that is already fully loaded when opened. Install Playwright with npm install playwright, save this as capture.mjs, then run node capture.mjs. Replace the URL with the thread you are authorized to access. A forum that loads posts only as you scroll needs additional, site-specific scrolling and verification before the PDF call.

If you specifically need screen-media styling, Playwright documents emulating screen media before calling page.pdf(). A different option, fullPage: true, belongs to page.screenshot() and captures the full scrollable page as a screenshot—not a PDF print layout. Do not treat it as interchangeable with page.pdf().

Troubleshoot missing or unusable content
- The PDF stops partway through. Posts may not have loaded before printing, or the forum stopped loading them. Return to the thread, load the desired range in stages, and verify both endpoints before exporting.
- Earlier posts are missing after scrolling down. The forum may virtualize the list and remove earlier elements from the page. Try explicit pagination or a site-provided export; otherwise, use a site-specific workflow that saves segments rather than relying on one full-page capture.
- The page looks different in the PDF. Print CSS can change colors, layout, or formatting. Adjust preview settings such as scale, margins, orientation, and backgrounds, or use a capture method intended to preserve screen appearance. Verify the result, since extension behavior varies.
- A nested thread panel is absent or incomplete. Scrolling the outer page may not load the panel’s posts. Scroll the panel itself; if using an extension, verify that its documented inner-panel support works on the actual forum.
- A very long capture is split, scaled down, or fails. Check the tool’s handling of oversized output. FullPage Capture says its own captures beyond canvas limits are divided into numbered parts; this should not be assumed of other tools.
- Automated PDF output is missing posts. A successful
page.pdf()call only shows that PDF generation completed. Add and verify the forum-specific loading steps before exporting.
Check the PDF as an archive, not just an export
Before relying on the file, confirm that the requested first and last posts appear, the sequence is continuous, and timestamps, usernames, links, and page breaks remain understandable. For recurring records, use the same loading and review steps each time; Playwright can make PDF generation repeatable, but the logic for loading a particular forum remains site-specific.
