Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For electricity alone, a Raspberry Pi 4 setup averaging 3–5 watts at the wall would use about 2.16–3.60 kWh in a 30-day month. At an illustrative rate of ₹5 per kWh, that is ₹10.80–₹18; at ₹10 per kWh, it is ₹21.60–₹36. These are arithmetic examples, not a national Indian electricity rate, and the 3–5 W draw is a planning scenario—not a verified measurement of a Pi 4 running a 24/7 YouTube stream.
Estimate the monthly electricity cost
Use the complete setup’s average power draw at the wall and the marginal energy rate on your electricity bill. The formula is:
- Monthly energy (kWh) = watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × days
- Monthly electricity cost = monthly kWh × your marginal tariff in ₹/kWh
Using 30 days and a 3–5 W average wall draw as a planning example:
| Average wall draw | 30-day energy | Cost at illustrative ₹5/kWh | Cost at illustrative ₹10/kWh | 365-day energy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 W | 2.16 kWh | ₹10.80 | ₹21.60 | 26.28 kWh |
| 5 W | 3.60 kWh | ₹18.00 | ₹36.00 | 43.8 kWh |
The ₹5 and ₹10 rates are examples for the calculation only. They are not claims about a typical or universal household rate in India. Your bill may include slab-based charges, duties, subsidies, and fixed charges; the calculation estimates energy cost using the applicable marginal rate and excludes fixed charges already on the bill.

Find the right rate for your Indian electricity bill
India does not have one household marginal electricity rate that can be applied to every Raspberry Pi owner. Charges depend on the state and utility, consumer category, consumption slab, and applicable duties or subsidies. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff publication organizes information by state and category, rather than establishing a single nationwide household figure: CEA tariff publication, March 2026.
For a useful estimate, identify the energy charge that applies to the additional units your household uses. If your tariff is slab-based, the marginal units may fall in a different slab from the average cost shown by dividing the whole bill by total units. Use your bill or utility tariff schedule to determine the relevant rate; do not divide in fixed charges that would remain even if the Pi were switched off.

Measure the whole setup instead of guessing from the power supply
The most personalized estimate comes from measuring the complete setup at the wall. Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor, or other reliable wall-power measurement, with the equipment configured as it will run. Record its average watts over a representative period; brief peaks do not tell you the 24-hour average.
- Include the Pi 4 and its USB-C power supply, so conversion losses are reflected.
- Include attached storage, cooling, and separately powered network accessories.
- Include a display only if it will remain on during the stream.
- Use average consumption over time, not the supply’s rated capacity or a short peak reading.
Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 3 A USB-C supply for the Pi 4. That is a 15 W supply capacity, not a claim that the board continuously consumes 15 W: Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

Why published Pi 4 power figures are not a livestream bill
Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation gives approximate current figures for specific conditions, including 0.6 A average at idle and 0.78 A average for H.264 video playback. The Pi 4 measurements date to June 2019; the stated test setup used Ethernet, a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and the documentation warns that USB devices or HATs can increase consumption. Those figures are useful context, but they are not a measured 24/7 YouTube streaming workload: Raspberry Pi hardware documentation.
A separate Raspberry Pi thermal article reported 2.89 W at idle and 7.28 W under a worst-case synthetic workload at launch, with lower readings in later firmware stages. These are time- and test-specific figures, not a current guarantee or a livestream measurement: Raspberry Pi thermal testing, 2019. For this reason, the 3–5 W scenario above should be treated as a transparent planning assumption until you measure your own setup.

Keep electricity separate from the full operating budget
The estimate above covers electricity only. Internet service, backup power, equipment purchase or replacement, and any paid streaming service can add costs, but there is no universal amount for them. Do not count an existing household internet subscription or fixed bill entirely as a new cost of streaming; count only costs that increase because of the stream. Keep one-time equipment purchases separate from recurring running costs.

If the goal is a continuously running YouTube channel rather than using the Pi specifically, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded video looping, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India. See StreamNeo or pricing details, then start the free day.
