When a Browserless screenshot times out, first identify which stage ran out of time: the overall REST request, navigation, a selector or function wait, or the screenshot operation. Increase or change that specific limit, and wait for the condition your capture actually needs. A longer timeout will not fix a CAPTCHA, access-denied page, or a site that is blocking automation.

Identify which Browserless timeout is expiring

Browserless has separate timing controls, and they do not all mean the same thing. The query parameter timeout limits the entire REST operation, including its waits. Navigation can have its own limit through gotoOptions.timeout, while explicit selector, function, or event waits and the screenshot operation can also be where a workflow stalls. Browserless documents the whole-request behavior in its timeout guide.

  • The REST request fails or reaches its overall limit: review the query-level timeout and the time consumed by every step.
  • Navigation does not finish: review gotoOptions.timeout and the chosen waitUntil condition.
  • A wait never resolves: check whether the selector, function condition, or event can actually occur on the page.
  • The page appears ready but capture fails or takes too long: review screenshot options, including full-page capture and image waiting.

Do not assume an HTTP 200 response from Browserless proves the target website returned a successful page. Check the resulting content and status: Browserless documents that blank or white captures, CAPTCHA pages, access-denied or 403 responses, and missing or broken elements can signal that automation is being blocked. See its troubleshooting documentation.

Set a realistic overall request budget

Set the query parameter timeout high enough for navigation, any readiness waits, and the screenshot itself. The value is the budget for the whole operation, not extra time added independently to each step. If the total budget is too low, a slow but otherwise successful page can fail before capture; setting it unnecessarily high also delays learning that a request has failed. Browserless recommends choosing realistic limits and monitoring total request time in its timeout guidance.

There is no single maximum request timeout established for every Browserless route, deployment, or account in the documentation covered here. Check the current documentation for the exact endpoint and account you use rather than treating a route-specific limit as universal.

Choose the right navigation readiness condition

The navigation completion condition determines when the browser proceeds after opening a page. Choose it based on the content you need, not simply because one option sounds more complete.

Condition What it waits for When it can fit
domcontentloaded The initial HTML document has been parsed. The required content is available early, and waiting for every dependent resource is unnecessary.
load The page’s load event, after dependent resources have loaded. The screenshot depends on resources that should finish as part of normal page loading.
networkidle0 Zero network connections for at least 500 ms. The page becomes quiet and that quiet state is a useful readiness signal.
networkidle2 No more than two network connections for at least 500 ms. Some background or long-lived network activity remains, but the page otherwise reaches a suitable state.

Pages with polling, analytics, streaming, or other persistent requests may never become idle. In that case, an idle condition can time out even when the needed content is already present. Browserless describes these waitUntil choices in its timeout guide.

Wait for the content you need

If a particular element signals that the page is ready, use waitForSelector and, where appropriate, require it to be visible. If readiness depends on application state rather than one element, use waitForFunction to wait for that condition. These waits are more meaningful than sleeping for an arbitrary interval when the required state can be identified.

  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Use a fixed waitForTimeout delay only when elapsed time itself matters, such as allowing an animation to finish. A fixed delay always consumes its full duration, even if the page is ready sooner. Whatever readiness method you select, include its time in the overall request budget. Browserless documents the wait options in its timeout guide.

Use bestAttempt only when a partial page is acceptable

Browserless documents bestAttempt: true as a way to continue after some awaited events time out, returning the page state available at that point. This can help when a partial capture is useful, but it does not mean the required content loaded. Inspect the screenshot and verify the elements or state your workflow depends on before treating the result as successful. See the timeout guide and troubleshooting documentation.

Reduce screenshot work only when the output permits it

Full-page capture and waiting for images can add work, especially on pages with long documents or many images. Disable either only if the requested output does not need it: a viewport-only screenshot is not a substitute for a full-page record, and skipping image waits may leave the visual result incomplete. Browserless lists fullPage, waitForImages, and the screenshot timeout among its screenshot options. Its BQL screenshot.timeout default is 30 seconds (30,000 ms); this is a documented default for that BQL screenshot operation, not a universal maximum for all routes or deployments. See the screenshot operation reference and ScreenshotOptions API reference.

Browserless also documents resource rejection and request-pattern rejection as configuration capabilities. Blocking resources can reduce unnecessary work, but only block requests after confirming those resources are not needed for the desired visual output. Refer to its request configuration documentation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely issue to check Next step
The entire request times out The overall timeout budget is too small for navigation, waits, and capture, or an earlier stage is stalled. Measure which stage is consuming the budget; adjust the overall limit only after selecting suitable navigation and readiness conditions.
Navigation times out while the page keeps making requests The selected idle condition may not fit a page with persistent background activity. Use a specific selector or function condition if possible, or choose a navigation event that matches the content needed.
A selector wait times out The selector may not exist, may differ on this page, or may never become visible. Confirm the selector against the target page and wait for the actual readiness signal.
The output is blank, white, a CAPTCHA, or an access-denied/403 page The target may be blocking automation or returning an error page. Inspect the captured page and target response. Increasing the timeout alone does not address blocking.
The page is usable, but full-page or image capture runs out of time Capture work may exceed the available budget. Keep full-page capture and image waiting only when required, and verify whether the screenshot-specific timeout is the failing layer.
The API reports success, but expected content is missing Browserless’s API response may not reflect a successful target-site response, or the page may have rendered only partially. Validate the captured content and target result; do not equate API HTTP 200 with successful site content.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server with Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client.
