Test an Indian bank website at multiple CSS viewport sizes, including a narrow 320-pixel-wide check, then validate important journeys on supported physical devices. A viewport emulator helps expose responsive-layout defects; it does not prove that a site works on every phone, browser, or assistive technology. Record the conditions for each check so another tester can reproduce it.
What a mobile viewport test can—and cannot—tell you
A viewport test checks how a page lays out and behaves within a specified browser window. It can reveal clipped text, overlapping controls, inaccessible menus, horizontal scrolling, and broken forms. Emulation is useful for efficiently trying widths and heights, but it is not a substitute for checks on physical devices and supported browser/OS combinations.
There is no universal handset list or single width that proves an Indian bank’s website is mobile-friendly. Build coverage from the bank’s supported-device data, customer context, and the risks of the journeys being tested. The available official material identifies relevant testing areas, but does not prescribe a device matrix for every bank.
Use the right criteria for an Indian bank site
The Department of Financial Services’ Accessibility Standards and Guidelines for Banking Sector, notified February 2, 2024, says banking websites and apps should be accessible to all people and references IS 17802 and WCAG 2.1. It identifies website features including skip-to-main-content access, text-size and spacing options, structured headings, page titles, and alternative text.

For a concrete narrow-width check, GIGW’s WCAG-derived guidance calls for responsive presentation without horizontal scrolling at a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels. GIGW is government website and app guidance; this criterion is a useful test reference, not by itself a bank-specific regulation. Its stated case also mentions a height equivalent to 256 CSS pixels for text intended to scroll horizontally.
RBI’s October 11, 2024 notification refers payment-system participants to the Ministry of Finance’s banking-sector accessibility guidelines notified February 2, 2024. For formal compliance conclusions, consult the current official instruments and the institution’s compliance team. A viewport check is not a security audit or a certification.

Plan coverage before opening developer tools
Choose pages and journeys
Include a representative mix of public pages and, where you have authorized access and test credentials, authenticated journeys. Examples include finding help or contact information, locating a branch or service, signing in, and high-risk transaction flows. Choose pages with different interface elements: navigation, account summaries or tables, forms, dialogs, disclosures, and error states.
Choose browsers, devices, and conditions
Use the bank’s documented support data to select browser and OS combinations. Add real devices based on journey risk and customer context rather than assuming a generic phone list represents all Indian customers. For each run, note whether it uses browser emulation or a physical device, the orientation, viewport width and height in CSS pixels, zoom and text settings, accessibility settings, and network condition.

Vary these dimensions deliberately. A portrait viewport and a landscape viewport can expose different problems; so can larger text, reduced network quality, and a keyboard-only interaction. Do not label an arbitrary set of widths as an official or universal matrix.
Run responsive checks at each selected size
- Set and record the viewport. In your browser’s developer tools, select a responsive viewport or device preset, enter the intended width and height, and record both in CSS pixels. Record browser, OS, orientation, zoom/text settings, and emulation status alongside them.
- Include the 320 CSS-pixel check. At 320 CSS pixels wide, inspect whether content remains available and readable without avoidable horizontal scrolling. Identify this as the GIGW responsive reference, not a bank-specific rule.
- Follow the page in reading and interaction order. Check that important content remains present and in a sensible order, navigation can be reached, and menus and dialogs stay within the screen.
- Exercise forms and controls. Check that fields and buttons fit, can be operated, have understandable labels, and show useful validation or status feedback. Look for clipped text, overlapping controls, difficult tap targets, and errors that are hard to find or understand.
- Capture reproducible evidence. Save a screenshot and the steps that exposed each problem. Include the page or journey and the exact viewport conditions; an image without those details may not be enough to reproduce a responsive defect.
Recheck accessibility at the same widths
Accessibility issues can appear or worsen as a layout changes, so repeat these checks at each selected size rather than treating them as a separate desktop-only pass.

- Navigate with a keyboard and confirm that focus is visible and follows a usable order.
- Check that skip-to-main-content access works and headings communicate a clear structure.
- Confirm that the page has a useful title and that images have appropriate text alternatives.
- Check that form controls and other interactive elements have usable labels or names.
- Try text resizing and spacing options; check that content does not disappear, overlap, or become unusable.
- Check contrast and confirm that error and status messages remain understandable and discoverable.
Automated accessibility tools can help flag issues, but they do not replace manual interaction. Include assistive-technology checks where required by the team’s test plan. After emulation, test important journeys on supported physical device/browser combinations selected from the bank’s matrix. Include orientation changes when relevant to the task, and check behavior under realistic network conditions. This matters because a layout that appears sound in an emulator may behave differently on a physical device or under a constrained connection.

An Indian Bank testing-services RFP dated February 6, 2026 names mobile UI and multi-device/form-factor testing alongside WAN, usability, and accessibility testing. It cites browser developer tools as an example for WAN emulation. These are distinct QA concerns in that procurement document; it does not establish a universal legal requirement or require every bank to use a specific tool.
Record findings so they can be retested
Use a consistent report for each defect. Separate formal compliance criteria from quality thresholds the team has chosen for itself; the cited documents do not define defect severity levels or a complete reporting template.
- Page URL or journey name and test date.
- Viewport width and height in CSS pixels, browser, OS, and device.
- Whether the run used emulation or a physical device, and the orientation.
- Accessibility, text, and zoom settings, plus network condition.
- Expected behavior, actual behavior, screenshot or other evidence, and reproducible steps.
- Severity rationale and the result of the retest.
