To capture a mobile website view with WebPageTest, enter the page URL, select a mobile or emulated-mobile browser/device configuration, run the test, and inspect its visual result or filmstrip. The mobile preset changes the test setup; it is not just a desktop screenshot cropped to a phone-shaped image.
Run a mobile-configured WebPageTest
- Open the Site Performance test at WebPageTest and enter the URL you want to inspect.
- Select a mobile configuration. The interface snapshot lists Chrome on an emulated Motorola G (gen 4). Mobile choices and labels can change; advanced configuration also offers browser, location, and device choices.
- Set the test conditions that matter. Choose a location and connection profile if relevant, and decide whether to test first view or repeat view and how many runs to use. Keep these settings consistent if you plan to compare results.
- Submit the test and open its visual output. WebPageTest supports visual results, filmstrips, and video capture; the result-page labels may vary, so follow the available visual or video controls rather than relying on a fixed button name.
The capture represents the selected browser/device emulation and the chosen test conditions. Record those settings alongside the image if you will compare it with another run.
What mobile emulation changes
WebPageTest’s mobile preset is an emulated device, not evidence that the page was rendered on a physical Motorola phone. A WebPageTest staff explanation says mobile emulation changes the user agent to mimic the selected phone, resizes the browser window to the device, and throttles CPU accordingly. See the WebPageTest support discussion for that explanation; no current full inventory of physical-device test agents is established here.
This is useful for checking responsive layout and getting a mobile-oriented rendering without owning a dedicated test phone. It does not guarantee that every real handset, browser, or network will render identically.

Make screenshot comparisons meaningful
If two captures look different, first check whether the test conditions also changed. Compare like with like across these settings:
- Rendering: mobile browser/device preset and emulation behavior.
- Network and geography: test location and connection profile.
- Load state: first view or repeat view, plus the number of runs.
- Output: visual result or filmstrip versus full-size video capture.
When the purpose is to identify a layout change, hold those settings constant so a changed test configuration is not mistaken for a changed page.

Troubleshooting
- The result looks like a desktop page: verify that you selected a mobile/emulated-mobile configuration before submitting. A desktop run followed by a narrow crop is not the same as a mobile-emulated test.
- You cannot find an “Emulate Mobile Browser” checkbox: the emulated mobile devices may appear in the main browser dropdown instead. The current interface’s exact labels can change, so inspect its browser/device choices.
- Two captures differ unexpectedly: compare the device preset, location, connection, first/repeat-view setting, and run count before attributing the difference to the website.
- You need an exact result-page click path: WebPageTest’s currently documented pages do not establish every result-screen label. Use the visual/video controls actually shown for your result rather than assuming a particular sequence.
- You need a physical-device capture: the described workflow establishes emulation, not the availability of a physical-device agent in a particular region. Confirm current agent options in WebPageTest before depending on one.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an image file from a URL without configuring a WebPageTest run, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot endpoint. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the target URL:
