To capture a mobile website at the requested width, set Chrome DevTools to a 400 CSS-pixel-wide responsive viewport, then capture either the visible screen or the full page. If you need an image file exactly 400 pixels wide, check the saved image dimensions: device-pixel ratio and screenshot scaling can make the raster file wider than 400 pixels.
Set a 400 CSS-pixel viewport in Chrome
- Open the website in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Select Toggle device toolbar to turn on Device Mode.
- Open the device dimensions menu and select Responsive.
- Enter 400 in the width field. Set the height to suit the portion of the page you want to capture.
- If you need to test mobile rendering or touch behavior, set the device type to Mobile. Chrome also offers Mobile (no touch) and Desktop modes, which differ in rendering behavior and event types.
- Wait for the page to settle. From More options, choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire scrollable page.
Chrome documents custom responsive dimensions and both capture choices in its Device Mode guide. Device Mode can also show media-query breakpoints; clicking a breakpoint is useful for checking where the page’s responsive styles change. Geolocation simulation and network or CPU throttling are optional test settings, not prerequisites for a 400-pixel viewport.
Understand the difference between viewport width and image width
The 400 in the responsive width field is a CSS-pixel viewport measurement. CSS viewport width drives responsive layout and media queries; it is not necessarily the number of physical pixels in the screenshot file. Device-pixel ratio (DPR) is the ratio between physical hardware pixels and logical CSS pixels. Screenshot scale can also affect raster output.
If the deliverable must be exactly 400 pixels wide, use a 400 CSS-pixel viewport, choose CSS-pixel screenshot scaling in an automation workflow, and verify the saved file’s dimensions. A device-scale capture can be wider than 400 pixels on a high-DPI device. Browser zoom is not a substitute for changing viewport width.

Automate repeatable captures with Playwright
Set the viewport before navigation so the page loads at the intended size. This runnable Node.js example captures the visible viewport at CSS-pixel scale:

})();Replace https://example.com with the page to capture. The 850-pixel height is an example; adjust it to the desired viewport. For a full-page image, change fullPage to true. That extends the capture vertically; it does not change the 400 CSS-pixel viewport width. Playwright documents viewport configuration and screenshot options, including CSS scale (one output pixel per CSS pixel) and device scale.

Account for what “for Indian users” means
The India wording does not change how to set the width. It may matter when a website changes its content or behavior according to location, language, or regional preferences. Playwright supports emulating locale, timezone, and geolocation; Chrome Device Mode also supports geolocation simulation. Configure those only when the site or test brief calls for them.
Emulated location or locale does not prove what a real user in India will see on a particular handset, carrier, network, or account. Chrome describes Device Mode as a way to “approximate how your page looks and performs on a mobile device.” For hardware-specific behavior, inspect the page on a physical phone; Chrome also documents remote debugging with a phone.

Choose the capture method for the job
- One-off image: use Chrome Device Mode and its screenshot menu.
- Repeatable captures: automate with Playwright and set the viewport before navigation.
- Exact 400-pixel-wide raster: use CSS-pixel scaling, then inspect the saved image dimensions.
- Hardware-specific confidence: verify on a real phone rather than relying only on emulation.
- Whole-page documentation: use full-page capture; for only the currently visible area, use viewport capture.
