CaptureKit creates Open Graph preview images by taking a screenshot of a webpage—not by turning title and description fields directly into an image. Build an HTML social-card template, make its URL reachable by CaptureKit, request a capture through the Screenshot API, publish the resulting image at a public URL, and put that URL in the shared page’s og:image metadata.
How the CaptureKit workflow fits together
There are two separate deliverables: the image file and the Open Graph metadata on the page people share. CaptureKit’s Screenshot API captures a rendered webpage. Your application supplies the design by rendering each post’s title, branding, and other content into an HTML page. After capture, your application stores or publishes the image and sets its public URL in the destination page’s Open Graph tags.
- Create a branded HTML template with the content for the card.
- Serve that template at a URL the CaptureKit service can reach.
- Call
GET /v1/capturefrom your backend using the API key in thex-api-keyheader. - Store the returned image or use the endpoint’s documented optional S3-compatible storage settings.
- Set the final image URL in the shared page’s
og:imagetag and publish its other Open Graph metadata.
CaptureKit lists one credit per capture call. Successful calls consume credits; its documentation also describes dashboard logs and a /v1/usage endpoint for checking authentication and usage.
Build a social-card page
Create an HTML page or application route that renders the card at the dimensions you intend to capture. A route such as /social-card/my-article can load a post record and insert its title, author or category, short excerpt, brand mark, and background or featured visual. CaptureKit’s Open Graph images and social media previews use case describes using HTML templates with dynamic content and generating images when new content is published.

Design the layout for the chosen canvas, rather than assuming the browser viewport will crop it as you expect. The endpoint defaults to a 1280 by 1024 viewport; set the width and height explicitly for a social-card layout. The example below uses 1200 by 630 as an implementation choice, not a universal platform requirement. CaptureKit’s use-case page advises optimizing dimensions for the target platforms but does not prescribe one size for all of them.
The capture service must be able to request the template URL. If the page depends on authentication, an inaccessible internal network, or client-side data that is not available to the capture service, it may not render as intended. Do not put secrets or private content in a URL that the capture service can request.
Call CaptureKit’s Screenshot API
Keep the API key in a server-side secret store or trusted automation environment. The current endpoint reference specifies an x-api-key header. Do not put the key in browser JavaScript or a mobile app: someone who can inspect the client can extract it. The request below uses environment variable CAPTUREKIT_API_KEY; set it in your server or shell before running the command.
curl --get 'https://api.capturekit.dev/v1/capture'
--header "x-api-key: ${CAPTUREKIT_API_KEY}"
--data-urlencode 'url=https://example.com/social-card/my-article'
--data-urlencode 'format=png'
--data-urlencode 'viewport_width=1200'
--data-urlencode 'viewport_height=630'
Use the current endpoint reference for the complete parameter names and behavior. In addition to the URL, format, and viewport, the documented options relevant to rendering include scale_factor, image_quality for JPEG or WebP, a delay, wait_until, wait_for_selector, and cache controls. Set only the options your template needs: for example, wait for a known card element if it appears after client-side rendering rather than adding an arbitrary long delay.

Choose the output deliberately
- Format: PNG is the documented default. The API reference supports PNG, JPEG/JPG, WebP, and PDF. For social previews, choose an image format and verify the returned asset at its final public URL.
- Dimensions: set
viewport_widthandviewport_heightto match the template. The documented default is 1280 by 1024, which may not suit a landscape social card. - Scale: the documented default
scale_factoris 1. A different scale can change output detail and file size; check the resulting image in the destination platform. - Quality: use
image_qualityfor JPEG or WebP when you need to tune the output. The API documents this setting for those formats. - Readiness: use the documented delay,
wait_until, orwait_for_selectorcontrols when the page needs time or a specific element to render. Their presence does not guarantee identical results for every framework or site. - Cache: use the endpoint’s cache controls if they fit your update policy. If the card changes, make sure your workflow obtains and publishes the intended image rather than assuming a previous capture is fresh.
Save the image and add Open Graph metadata
Persist the returned asset in storage that gives it a stable, publicly reachable image URL. CaptureKit documents optional S3-compatible storage settings, but the reviewed documentation does not specify every requirement of social-platform crawlers. Ensure the URL you publish can be fetched without authentication.
The Open Graph protocol requires og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url as basic metadata. When an image is present, it also describes image properties including alternative text, dimensions, MIME type, and a secure URL. Add the tags to the HTML head of the destination page—the page being shared, not just the page used as the screenshot template.
<meta property="og:title" content="A useful article title">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/articles/my-article">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://cdn.example.com/og/my-article.png">

<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/png">
Replace the sample values with the canonical destination URL and the actual published image URL and properties. The Open Graph protocol’s overview is at ogp.me.
Automate image generation when content is published
For a blog, product catalog, event listing, or news site, trigger the capture after the content and its card route are ready. Save the generated image URL with the content record, then render that URL into the destination page’s Open Graph tags. This makes the image-generation step and the metadata update part of one publishing workflow instead of a manual task for each post.

Troubleshoot common problems
The request is unauthorized
Check that the server is sending the API key in the x-api-key header and that the key is available to the process making the request. Do not copy older examples that use a query parameter without verifying them against the current endpoint reference. A February 19, 2026 CaptureKit migration post includes x_api_key query-parameter examples, but the current Screenshot API reference specifies the header.
The capture is blank or missing card content
Open the template URL from outside your application’s private environment and confirm the card content appears. If content renders asynchronously, try a documented delay, wait_until, or wait_for_selector setting. Check that the selector exists in the rendered page and that scripts or assets the template needs are reachable. CaptureKit documents these readiness controls but does not guarantee the same behavior for every site or framework.
The image has the wrong crop or proportions
Set viewport_width and viewport_height explicitly and make the template layout fit them. Otherwise, the endpoint’s 1280 by 1024 default may differ from the design canvas you expected.

The file type or visual quality is wrong
Check the requested format, the returned asset, and any image_quality setting used for JPEG or WebP. PNG is the documented default. Inspect the actual published image rather than relying only on the request parameters.
The shared preview still shows an old image
Verify that the destination page now emits the intended og:image URL and that the URL returns the new image. Social consumers may cache page metadata or images; the reviewed sources do not establish platform-specific cache durations or promise an immediate refresh.
The API key may be exposed
If the request runs in browser-side code or a mobile application, move it to a backend or trusted automation environment and rotate the exposed key. CaptureKit explicitly warns against client-side API calls that reveal the key.

ScreenshotNeo is another way to capture webpages: its API accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF, with a one-call workflow rather than requiring you to configure your own browser capture setup. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does CaptureKit create a social-card design from a title and description alone?
No. Its Screenshot API captures a webpage, so your application needs to render the card content in an HTML page that the service can reach.
Is 1200 × 630 a required CaptureKit size?
No. It is an example canvas choice. Set dimensions for the design and destination platforms you target.
Will changing the image URL force every social platform to refresh its preview immediately?
No immediate refresh is guaranteed. Platforms may cache metadata or images, and platform-specific cache durations are not established here.
