“Stream theme” can mean the look of OBS on your computer, the visuals viewers see in your broadcast, or the branding on your Twitch or YouTube channel page. These are separate settings: changing OBS’s application theme does not change the video you stream. This guide shows how to change the OBS Studio theme, then how to customize on-screen scenes and channel branding.
Choose what you want to customize
| What you change | Where to change it | What viewers see |
|---|---|---|
| OBS application theme | OBS Studio settings or an installed custom theme | Nothing; it changes OBS’s controls on your computer. |
| On-stream visuals | OBS scenes and sources, or a ready-made overlay package | Overlays, text, backgrounds, alerts, and other elements included in the broadcast. |
| Channel branding | Twitch Creator Dashboard or YouTube Studio | Your channel page, such as its imagery, layout, and information. |
Change the OBS Studio theme
The OBS Project’s Themes Guide, published January 13, 2022, describes selecting a theme from OBS settings. Menu labels can vary by version: the guide places the control under Settings > General, while OBS Studio 30.2 and later documentation places it under Appearance. If your installation differs, consult the OBS Themes Guide and the theme-system documentation.
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Open General or, in OBS Studio 30.2 and later, Appearance.
- Find the Theme drop-down.
- Choose a built-in theme or a custom theme that you have installed, then apply the change if prompted.
This affects the OBS interface only. It does not add an overlay, alter your scenes, or change your Twitch or YouTube channel page.
Install a custom OBS theme
The OBS Project recommends putting custom themes in the user configuration directory rather than inside the application installation. The themes directory may not exist yet, so create it if necessary. The documented locations are:

A theme typically includes a QSS stylesheet and a folder of custom images. As the OBS Project puts it in its Themes Guide, “Themes use a combination of QSS, a subset of CSS 2, and a folder of custom images.” QSS is not the same as unrestricted modern web CSS, so use the theme documentation for the supported styling model.
- Get a theme from a source you trust. Community themes are available through the OBS forums; check the author’s compatibility notes and inspect files before installing them.
- Extract the theme package and place its stylesheet and associated image folder in the appropriate
themesdirectory. Preserve the package’s folder structure. - Restart or refresh OBS as the theme’s instructions require, then select it from the theme control in Settings.
- Check the interface for missing images or rendering problems. Remove the theme files and switch back to a built-in theme if the custom theme does not display correctly.
OBS Studio’s theme-system documentation describes features introduced in version 30.2, including theme variants whose properties can appear in Appearance settings and an auto-reload feature for theme development. Those options are version-dependent; do not expect them in older installations.

Build a theme viewers can see with scenes and sources
For a broadcast look, customize the scenes sent to viewers rather than the OBS application theme. In OBS, a scene is a composition of sources. Add and arrange items such as image overlays, text, camera footage, and backgrounds to create a starting screen, live layout, break screen, or ending screen. The OBS Project’s OBS Studio Overview Guide and its scene-building tutorial show the basic workflow; preview the result before going live.
Use assets that suit the scene
- For a still overlay or background that needs transparent areas, use an image format that supports transparency. Elgato’s Stream Overlays guidance recommends PNG for static overlays.
- For an animated bar or overlay that needs transparency during playback, Elgato recommends WEBM. This is vendor guidance, not a guarantee that every file will work in every setup; test the asset in the intended scene.
- Keep essential text and important camera or gameplay areas visible. Check the scene preview at the size and layout viewers will see.
A ready-made package is another option, not a requirement. Streamlabs describes theme packages that may include starting-soon, live, be-right-back, and ending scenes, alongside overlays and alerts. See its How to Customize Your Twitch Channel material for the package and customization context, and check compatibility before using any third-party assets.

Customize your Twitch or YouTube channel page
Channel branding is separate from both the OBS interface and the video scenes. Make these changes in the platform’s own controls.
Twitch
Twitch’s Channel Page Setup guide covers channel-page elements such as accent color, panels, and a video-player banner shown while the channel is offline. Some features described in Twitch’s Creator Dashboard guidance are limited to Affiliates and Partners, so check eligibility in your account before planning around a gated feature.
YouTube
In YouTube Studio, use Customization to manage channel layout, branding, and basic information. YouTube’s Channel customization help page covers those controls. Changes here affect the channel page, not OBS scenes or the OBS interface.

Preview and troubleshoot before going live
The OBS overview guidance recommends testing a setup before the first live stream. Apply that to visual changes: look through every scene, check transitions, and make sure text and key video areas remain visible before you broadcast.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The OBS controls changed, but viewers see no difference: You changed the application theme. Add or edit sources in your scenes for broadcast-facing visuals.
- Your custom theme is missing from the drop-down: Confirm the files are in the correct operating-system-specific user directory, that the theme directory exists, and that the package’s folder structure is intact. Consult the theme author’s compatibility instructions.
- A theme appears, but images are missing: The stylesheet may not be beside its associated image folder, or the package may not be compatible with your OBS version. Recheck its structure and compatibility notes, or switch back to a built-in theme.
- An overlay has an opaque background: Check whether the source file preserves transparency and whether its format is suitable. Test a transparent PNG for a static overlay; for animation, verify the format and alpha support of the specific file.
- Text or important content is obscured: Reposition or resize the elements in the scene, then preview the full scene and its transitions.
- A channel-page option is unavailable: Check that you are in the platform’s channel customization controls, not OBS settings. On Twitch, verify whether the feature is restricted to Affiliates or Partners.
