Set viewport_width and viewport_height on CaptureKit’s GET /v1/capture request to choose the browser viewport dimensions in pixels. The documented defaults are 1280 × 1024 pixels. Use full_page separately to control whether the screenshot extends beyond that visible viewport.
Set the viewport width and height
CaptureKit’s endpoint reference documents viewport_width and viewport_height as the browser viewport dimensions, measured in pixels. Include both in the request when you need predictable dimensions; if omitted, the reference lists defaults of 1280 pixels wide and 1024 pixels high. See the CaptureKit endpoint reference.

Keep the key in a server-side secret or environment variable, not in client-side code or a URL that may be logged or shared. CaptureKit’s authentication documentation describes the header and advises keeping the key secret.

Viewport dimensions are not full-page capture
The viewport width and height define the browser area used for the capture. They do not, by themselves, determine whether content below the visible area appears in the output. CaptureKit’s separate full_page setting controls that coverage: leave it off for the visible viewport, or set full_page=true to capture the whole page. The endpoint reference also documents scrolling options for loading lazy content during full-page capture.
Choose dimensions based on the layout you need to inspect. For example, a 1440 × 900 viewport requests a wide desktop-sized browser area; it does not guarantee that the page will render responsively as a particular physical device would. If the goal is to capture below-the-fold content, enable full-page capture rather than inflating the viewport height as a substitute.

Watch for a parameter-name discrepancy
CaptureKit’s official endpoint reference uses viewport_width and viewport_height, while its playbook examples use width and height. The materials do not establish that these spellings are interchangeable. For requests built against the endpoint reference, start with the viewport-prefixed names; if the dimensions are ignored, check the current endpoint documentation and CaptureKit’s guidance rather than assuming the shorter names are aliases.
Cost and request planning
The endpoint reference lists a cost of one credit per call. CaptureKit’s pricing page lists a 100-credit free tier and paid plans; pricing and included credits can change, so check that page for current terms before estimating recurring usage.

Changing viewport dimensions does not remove the per-call nature of that documented credit cost. When testing layouts, account for each capture request and avoid generating repeated requests unnecessarily.
Troubleshooting viewport dimensions
- The screenshot has unexpected dimensions: Confirm both
viewport_widthandviewport_heightare present, spelled exactly as documented, and encoded as request parameters. The endpoint reference’s defaults are 1280 × 1024 pixels. - The requested size appears to be ignored: Check for the documentation discrepancy: playbook examples use
widthandheight, unlike the endpoint reference. Do not assume one naming scheme is an alias for the other. - The key is rejected: Send the credential in the
x-api-keyheader, verify the server-side secret is populated, and make sure the key has not been exposed in browser code or a shared URL. - Only the top portion of the page appears: Viewport settings control the browser area; enable
full_page=truewhen the desired output should extend through the full page. - Lazy-loaded content is missing from a full-page capture: Consult the endpoint’s documented scrolling options for loading lazy content during full-page capture.
