Missing dimensions can also make the page jump while images load. Fixes depend on each image’s content, rendered size, and place in the loading sequence—not on converting or lazy-loading everything.
1. Serving images much larger than their display slot
A large source image displayed in a narrow content column can send more bytes than that layout needs. But the CSS width alone does not determine the right file: high-density displays may need more intrinsic pixels to keep an image sharp. The browser can choose among image candidates when you provide a width-descriptor srcset and an accurate sizes description. web.dev’s responsive image guidance explains how layout and device pixel ratio affect that choice.
Generate a practical set of image widths for the slots your site uses, then describe those slots in sizes. For example, if an image fills a content column that is 90% of the viewport on small screens and capped at 700 CSS pixels on wider screens, the sizes value should reflect those conditions. The exact value depends on your CSS layout; do not copy a generic example without checking it against the page.

2. Choosing a format or quality setting by rule of thumb
WebP and AVIF can produce smaller files than older formats, but neither wins for every image. Results vary with visual content, resolution, quality settings, transparency or animation needs, and browser support. A photograph, a sharp-edged diagram, and an image containing fine text can respond differently to the same encoding choice.
Compare representative assets at acceptable visual quality and measure their encoded bytes. Keep the required transparency or animation behavior, and choose a delivery approach that works for the browsers your audience uses. Do not convert an entire library on the assumption that a newer extension guarantees a smaller file or a fixed speed improvement. web.dev’s image guidance and Google’s image optimization page discuss the tradeoffs; the latter identifies itself as guidance for the deprecated PageSpeed Insights API v4, so its historical figures should not be treated as current.

3. Leaving out intrinsic width and height
When an image’s dimensions are unknown, the browser may not reserve its space before the file arrives. Nearby text and page elements can then shift as the image loads. Include the image’s intrinsic width and height attributes so the browser can infer its aspect ratio and reserve room. Responsive CSS can still scale it to fit the available layout; the attributes do not force it to remain at those rendered pixel dimensions.
As the web.dev Responsive images page puts it: “If you know an image’s dimensions, always include width and height attributes.”

Lazy loading is useful for images farther down the page: it can avoid fetching content a visitor never reaches. Applying loading="lazy" to the hero image or another image visible immediately can delay a request the page needs early, potentially hurting Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). Leave the important first-screen image eager by default, and lazy-load images below the fold where appropriate.

5. Making the LCP image hard to discover
An important image referenced in the initial HTML through src or srcset is generally discoverable earlier than one inserted later by JavaScript or referenced only as a CSS background. If the image is a CSS background that cannot reasonably be moved into markup, preloading may help, but it is not a blanket fix. Check the loading waterfall and resource priority first; unnecessary preloads and high-priority hints can compete with other work.
Use lab diagnostics to inspect when the browser discovers and requests the likely LCP image, and field data to understand real visitors’ experience. Asset size, candidate selection, discovery, and priority interact, so a change that saves bytes may not help if the browser still finds the image late. 6. Scaling an image workflow without adding avoidable complexity
For a small site, hand-created variants and explicit markup may be manageable. As image counts and layout variants grow, consider whether an image CDN or image transformation service can automate resizing and format delivery. That can reduce manual pipeline work, but it introduces its own configuration, caching, and maintenance decisions. Choose based on the number of sizes and formats you need to serve, not on an assumed performance gain. Check the actual page before and after changes
Inspect the page at the viewport sizes and device densities that matter to your layout. Confirm which candidate the browser downloaded, whether the image’s dimensions reserve space, when the important image is discovered, and whether its priority is appropriate. Compare visual quality and transfer bytes for the actual assets. Use both lab tools for controlled inspection and field data for real-user outcomes; the reviewed guidance does not establish a universal percentage speed gain from image optimization.
