1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no reliable single price for running a prerecorded YouTube stream around the clock on an M2 Mac mini versus a cloud server. The Mac’s power draw under your encoder workload, local electricity tariff, purchase price and useful life all matter; cloud cost depends on the provider, region, server, storage, network charges and billing minimum. Compare those inputs rather than treating a published power limit or a generic virtual-server price as the answer.
What a fair cost comparison includes
For a local Mac, count electricity and the portion of the purchase price you allocate to the stream, plus any incremental costs for internet, backup power, cooling, storage or replacement. For a cloud server, count compute for the required hours, persistent storage, applicable networking or transfer charges, and any monitoring or restart service.
Also compare the operating burden: a local machine depends on its power, internet connection and recovery arrangements; a cloud machine depends on the selected service and its configuration. The cheapest estimate is not necessarily the best fit if it leaves out an interruption or a requirement such as macOS compatibility.
Estimate the M2 Mac mini’s running cost
Use measured power, not a specification as an average
Apple lists 7 W idle and 50 W CPU maximum for a 2023 Mac mini configuration with an M2 processor, 24 GB unified memory and a 2 TB SSD (Apple Support, accessed 2026). These are reference figures for that configuration, not a measured average while encoding and streaming prerecorded video. Your Mac configuration and workload may differ. A plug-in wattmeter measured during a representative run is more useful for estimating actual energy use.

Calculate electricity separately
Use this formula, with your local electricity rate and actual scheduled hours:
Energy cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity price per kWh
For a 24/7 schedule, use the actual number of hours in the billing period rather than assuming every month has the same number of days. If you cannot measure power yet, show several clearly labelled scenarios based on assumed average wattage. Do not present Apple’s 50 W CPU maximum as the stream’s normal draw.
Allocate the hardware cost
Choose the exact Mac configuration and purchase price, then state the useful life you assume for this calculation:
Monthly hardware allocation = purchase price ÷ assumed useful life in months

This is an accounting choice, not a recurring charge imposed by Apple. Include additional storage or peripherals only if your workflow needs them. Add incremental internet, backup power, cooling or replacement costs only when they apply.
Estimate the cloud-server cost
If the workflow needs macOS
AWS offers EC2 M2 Mac instances on 2023 Mac mini hardware with an M2 processor, 8 CPU cores, 10 GPU cores and 24 GiB of memory (AWS EC2 Mac). AWS bills these instances by Dedicated Host, with a 24-hour minimum allocation; pricing varies by region, and AWS directs customers to its pricing information. That minimum matters if you need a short run or expect to turn the host off between sessions. It is not equivalent to renting an inexpensive generic Linux VPS.
If a generic operating system is acceptable
Price the specific instance that can reliably run your chosen encoder, then verify its operating-system and software compatibility, sustained performance, storage and network terms. Include compute runtime, persistent storage, any applicable public-IP or network charges, data transfer, and required monitoring or restart services. An arbitrary small VM price is not a sound estimate until those requirements are checked.
Do not confuse YouTube ingest with viewer delivery
A server that sends an encoder feed to YouTube is a different architecture from a cloud service that encodes, packages and delivers video directly to viewers. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS planning page gives an example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event with about 1,000 viewers using a 540p profile: approximately $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for distribution of 791 GB in US East (N. Virginia). The page’s revision date is not exposed in the cited result. This is an example for a managed live-event stack and viewer delivery, not the price of a machine that simply sends a stream to YouTube (AWS Live Streaming on AWS).
Check YouTube’s requirements for the stream
The encoder’s output affects both whether the stream works and the local machine’s workload. YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, specifies CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). Its encoder table recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p60; these are platform recommendations, not mandatory settings for every video. Choose resolution and bitrate for your content and sustained upstream bandwidth, and check YouTube’s live encoder settings for current guidance.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. Connect the encoder using YouTube’s server URL and stream key; YouTube describes the encoder connection and setup in its encoder setup guide. YouTube transcodes live ingest into multiple output formats for viewers, so the source upload and the downstream viewer delivery should not be counted as if they were the same service or cost.

| Cost component | M2 Mac mini | Cloud server |
|---|---|---|
| Compute or equipment | Purchase price divided by your assumed useful-life months | Region- and instance-specific compute, or Dedicated Host price and minimum allocation |
| Energy | Measured average watts ÷ 1,000 × actual monthly run hours × local price per kWh | Included in the cloud service price; no separate customer electricity-meter calculation |
| Storage | Existing or incremental local storage, as applicable | Persistent storage charges for the chosen service |
| Network | Incremental internet or backup connectivity, if applicable | Applicable transfer, public-IP or network charges under the selected service’s terms |
| Operations and recovery | Power, internet, restart and maintenance arrangements | Monitoring, restart services and other required services |
Then calculate:
Local monthly total = (measured average W ÷ 1,000 × monthly run hours × local $/kWh) + (hardware purchase price ÷ assumed useful-life months) + other incremental monthly costsCloud monthly total = region-specific compute or Dedicated Host price for required hours + storage + applicable networking/transfer + other required services
Label the schedule, tariff, hardware configuration, useful-life assumption, cloud region and instance, and any billing minimum. If average draw is not measured, label each power figure as an assumption. A meaningful break-even estimate changes with these inputs; there is no universal run duration at which the cloud always becomes cheaper.

Choose the setup that fits your constraints
- Favor the Mac calculation when you already own a suitable Mac, have reliable power and internet, and can accommodate the encoder software locally. Keep hardware allocation in the comparison even if the device is already purchased, and show it separately from incremental electricity.
- Price a cloud server when you want the workload off your home machine, after confirming operating-system compatibility, sustained encoder performance, storage, network terms and recovery needs. If macOS is essential, include the AWS Dedicated Host minimum and regional price rather than comparing it with a generic Linux VM.
- Compare like with like by pricing a server that sends to YouTube against the Mac doing the same job. Do not substitute a managed event stack that also distributes to viewers unless you need that service.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube prerecorded stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own computer or configuring a server: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly service is $9.99 per month. One slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, 24/7 looping and StreamNeo team support; plans have the same product, with the billing length changing. See StreamNeo for plan details. Start the free first day.
