Your local tariff and real workload—not a standard idle figure—determine the bill. Compare that operating cost with the full cloud or managed-service charge, including data transfer, storage, setup and maintenance.
Calculate the Mac mini’s 24/7 electricity cost
For a steady average load, annual energy is watts × 8.76 = kWh per year. Multiply that annual kWh figure by the price per kWh on your electricity bill to estimate the electricity cost. For a 30-day month, use watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 to find kWh, then multiply by your rate.
For example, a measured average of 20 W would use 175.2 kWh in a 365-day year (20 × 8.76). At a local rate of $0.20/kWh, that is $35.04 for the year. This is an example calculation, not a prediction of what a particular Mac mini will draw.
Measure the streaming workload, not just idle power
Use a plug-in power meter between the Mac mini and the wall outlet, and record its average draw after the machine has settled into the intended setup. Include the encoder, playlist software and any other equipment you plan to leave running. A separate display or network equipment can add to the household’s total, though it may not be powered by the Mac mini itself.

Apple’s current Mac mini power-consumption table reports wall-power measurements, including power-supply and system losses. For the 2024 M4 Mac mini, Apple lists 4 W idle and 65 W maximum. Apple defines idle as Finder open with default power-management settings; maximum comes from a compute-intensive test. Neither number measures a continuous YouTube stream, so treat them as reference points rather than a streaming estimate. Apple’s Mac mini power-consumption information describes its measurements.
What Apple’s reference figures would mean as arithmetic
The following translates Apple’s 2024 M4 figures into annual electricity use and cost using the U.S. residential average of $0.173/kWh reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration for 2025. It is national-average arithmetic, not a household bill or a measured stream result.

The EIA’s May 2026 monthly data reports a U.S. residential average of 18.44 cents/kWh; its page was released September 24, 2026, with data through July 2026. Regional and household rates vary, and readers outside the United States should use their own tariff. Check the EIA Electric Power Monthly data for context, but use the rate on your own bill for a useful personal estimate.
Compare electricity with a cloud instance fairly
A cloud server replaces the Mac mini’s electricity use with a recurring service bill, but the sticker price alone does not establish that the server can run your stream. AWS Lightsail’s current documentation lists a Linux/Unix public-IPv4 bundle at $5 per month, including 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage and 1 TB transfer. That is an entry bundle, not confirmation that it can encode your selected video reliably or that your continuous stream will stay within the transfer allowance. At 24/7 operation, video transfer can dominate the cloud calculation. A continuous stream sends data for roughly 720 hours in a 30-day month. The actual amount depends on the configured bitrate; for instance, 1 Mb/s sustained for 30 days is about 324 GB in decimal units, before protocol overhead. Compare the stream’s expected data with the plan’s included transfer and check how the provider bills excess use. Also confirm the instance has enough compute capacity for the encoder, enough storage for the files, and a suitable network connection.
Include the costs that a simple comparison misses
- Mac mini: measured electricity, the computer’s purchase price or depreciation, and any extra network equipment, cooling or display you need to keep operating.
- Cloud VPS: compute, storage, outbound transfer or overages, and the time or expense of configuring, monitoring and recovering the system.
- Managed streaming service: its subscription charge and any storage or slot limits, alongside the value of not administering an always-on computer or server yourself.
If you already own the Mac mini and it can handle the chosen stream, its purchase cost is sunk for the immediate operating-cost comparison. If you would buy one solely for streaming, include the hardware cost over the period you expect to use it; electricity alone will understate the total. A cloud service can cost more than electricity and still be preferable if it saves substantial maintenance work, but that is a trade-off rather than a power-cost saving.

Check that the setup can sustain YouTube Live
YouTube’s setup guidance says to enter its Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube recommends a secure RTMPS connection, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate to match the uploaded playlist and the quality you intend to send; the encoder still needs sufficient processing capacity and a stable upstream connection. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 among supported codecs. Its viewer-side transcoding does not remove the need for a correctly configured, reliable upstream encoder. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings and YouTube Live setup instructions before configuring the broadcast.
YouTube’s setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full. If a complete archive matters, plan around that limit rather than assuming the whole continuous stream will be available afterward.

A playlist stream also needs rights to the material being broadcast. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and check the applicable copyright and monetization rules; a stream that stays online technically is not automatically permitted or eligible for monetization. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains the platform’s copyright policy.

There is no universal winner: measure and compare the cost of the setup you would actually run.
- Establish the local baseline. Measure average watts at the wall while streaming, then apply your billed rate using the annual or 30-day formula above.
- Price the full cloud workload. Check the instance’s encoding capacity, storage, transfer allowance and overage policy. Do not treat a low entry price as proof of suitability.
- Account for ownership and upkeep. If the Mac mini is already in use, distinguish incremental electricity from the cost of buying and maintaining a dedicated machine. For a VPS, include setup and recovery work.
- Weigh continuity and control. Consider what happens after a power or internet outage, a process crash or a YouTube disconnect, and how quickly you can intervene. Do not infer guaranteed uptime from the hardware or plan price.
- Choose the trade-off you value. A local Mac mini provides direct control and may be economical if already owned and measured consumption is modest. A VPS moves the workload off-site but requires technical administration and careful bandwidth checks. Managed hosting trades a service fee for less server or computer maintenance.
