Generate each thumbnail by opening the linked news page in a browser, waiting for its content and Hindi fonts to render, then saving a consistent screenshot. For an automated directory, use a Playwright browser worker or a screenshot API, store the image yourself, and test the result at the small size readers will actually see.
Choose what the directory card should show
A website thumbnail is a browser-rendered image of a destination page or a selected part of it. Choose the capture style to match the card, not simply the largest available screenshot.
| Capture style | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | You want a consistent snapshot of the top of each page. | Lower-page content is omitted; headlines may be cut off depending on the page layout. |
| Selected element | A known element, such as a headline or lead image, is the most relevant preview. | Selectors may vary across news sites, and a missing or changed selector can make capture fail. |
| Full page | The overall article layout or a long visual is genuinely useful to preview. | The result can be tall and hard to read when scaled into a small card. |
Start with a consistent viewport for directory cards. Use full-page capture only when readers benefit from seeing the whole page, and crop or resize the saved image to the dimensions your directory displays. There is no universal thumbnail size established by the cited product documentation; validate dimensions, legibility, and file weight against your own layout.
Pick a capture workflow
Playwright: manage the browser yourself
Playwright can navigate to a page and save a screenshot. Its screenshot options include viewport, element, and full-page capture, with PNG, JPEG, and WebP formats. This approach gives you control over browser behavior and how captures connect to your storage and refresh process, but you must operate the browser worker and handle failures.

A minimal Python example for one page:
import asyncio
from pathlib import Path
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
async def main():
url = "https://example.com/news-story"
async with async_playwright() as p:
browser = await p.chromium.launch()
page = await browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1280, "height": 800})
await page.goto(url, wait_until="domcontentloaded", timeout=30000)
await page.locator("body").screenshot(path="thumbnail.png")
await browser.close()
asyncio.run(main())
This captures the visible body element; it does not guarantee that delayed page content or every font has finished loading. For your production capture, wait for the relevant content and fonts as described below. Playwright’s screenshot guide documents the capture controls: https://playwright.dev/docs/screenshots.
Hosted screenshot API: delegate capture
A hosted screenshot API accepts a destination URL and returns a screenshot, so you do not have to run the browser infrastructure yourself. OpenGraph.io documents a Screenshot API with format, quality, viewport preset, full-page, selector, and capture-delay parameters, and lists link-preview thumbnails as a use case. Its documented example screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours; download or cache an image if the directory needs it for longer. See its API documentation and Screenshot API details.
The available sources do not establish a cost, throughput, or accuracy comparison between a self-managed browser and hosted services. Decide based on whether you want to operate browser workers, how much capture control you need, who will persist the images, and the current commercial terms of any service you consider.
Manual captures: suitable only when the workflow is small
A person can capture individual thumbnails during link entry, but that does not provide an automated workflow. It may be appropriate when the directory has few links and editorial staff can reliably create and update each image.

Make Hindi and Devanagari text render reliably
Test using real directory entries: Hindi headlines, punctuation, numerals, and text that mixes Latin and Devanagari characters. A font that supports Devanagari is essential wherever you control the page or thumbnail template. Google Fonts describes Noto Sans Devanagari UI as an interface typeface and lists Hindi among its supported languages: Noto Sans Devanagari UI.
When the destination page or your own template uses web fonts, wait until the relevant text is present and the fonts used by the document are ready before capture. The browser’s document.fonts.ready promise fulfills after font loading and related layout operations complete, according to MDN’s Document.fonts reference. In Playwright, you can wait for it after navigating:
await page.goto(url, wait_until="domcontentloaded", timeout=30000)
await page.locator("body").wait_for()
await page.evaluate("document.fonts.ready")
await page.screenshot(path="thumbnail.webp", type="webp")
Font readiness does not prove that every dynamic page element is complete. For pages that populate headlines or lead images after initial load, wait for a page-specific selector or other suitable readiness condition too. News sites differ in font, layout, and loading behavior, so test a representative mix rather than assuming one delay works everywhere.
Store and refresh thumbnails deliberately
Whichever capture route you use, keep enough information to determine what an image represents and whether it needs attention. A practical record can include:

- The original destination URL.
- When the image was captured.
- The stored image location.
- A capture status, such as success or failure.
Those fields are implementation guidance, not a schema prescribed by the cited tools. Set a refresh policy that fits how often your directory needs current previews; the available sources do not establish a universally correct refresh interval.
Choose an image format based on the actual pages and delivery needs. JPEG or WebP may be useful when reducing file size matters; PNG preserves lossless image output. Compare the rendered quality and file size on your own page mix before standardizing.
Design for the small card, not the full-size capture
A 2019 study of thumbnails for data stories discusses resizing, cropping, simplifying, and embellishing charts as design choices, while noting that empirical consensus about effective choices was lacking. Treat thumbnail design as something to evaluate in context, not a proven recipe. Keep the preview recognizably connected to its linked article, avoid crops that change the apparent meaning of a chart or photo, and inspect it at the final card size. The study is available at https://doi.org/10.1145/3290605.3300339.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- Hindi characters appear as boxes or fall back to another font: check whether the page or template’s selected font supports Devanagari, and wait for fonts with
document.fonts.readybefore capturing. - The headline or image is missing: the page may populate it after navigation. Wait for a selector that identifies the content you need, rather than relying only on a fixed short delay.
- A capture is blank or incomplete: check whether navigation timed out or the page failed to load, and record the capture status so editors can identify the affected link. The sources do not prescribe a universal retry policy.
- The thumbnail is unreadable in the directory: inspect it at its displayed size. Try a more relevant viewport or selected element, then resize or crop for the card without changing the apparent meaning of the page.
- A hosted image URL no longer works: some outputs are temporary. OpenGraph.io documents 24-hour expiry for its example screenshot URLs; download or cache needed output rather than treating that URL as permanent storage.
- A selected-element capture fails: verify that the selector exists on that particular site and that the content has rendered. News sites do not share a guaranteed layout.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API takes a URL in one GET request; this cURL example saves a WebP screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

- It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server offers
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. - The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every thumbnail need to show the whole article page?
No. A viewport or selected-element image is often more suitable for a compact directory card; use full-page capture when the full layout is useful to readers.
Which font should I use for Hindi text in a thumbnail template?
Use a Devanagari-capable font. Noto Sans Devanagari UI is one documented option with Hindi support.
