Create portfolio thumbnails by choosing the grid and crop first, then exporting image renditions that look sharp at their actual display size. Use responsive image markup, useful filenames and alt text, and load the first visible images promptly while deferring the rest. There is no universal thumbnail width, aspect ratio or file-size target: the right choices depend on your design and should be checked on phone and desktop.
1. Curate the images and organize the portfolio
Start with a manageable selection that shows the quality and range of your work. Group photographs by real specialties—such as weddings, portraits, products or commercial projects—rather than adding categories simply to attract search traffic. For a cohesive shoot, a dedicated project page can present the images in a deliberate sequence.
A public portfolio has a different purpose from a private client-delivery gallery. Feature work that represents your practice; do not assume a complete client gallery should be public by default. An India-focused design provider recommends category galleries and individual shoot stories, but that is a vendor suggestion, not a universal technical rule. Apply it when it suits your work and clients.
2. Choose the grid, crop and display size
Decide how thumbnails will appear before exporting them. A uniform aspect ratio creates a tidier grid, but may cut off important parts of a photograph. Preserving each image’s natural orientation retains its composition, though the grid may be less regular. Neither approach is right for every portfolio.

- Make a small test set using the intended grid and inspect it at the actual card size.
- Check faces, subjects and focal points, especially on narrow phone screens.
- Choose dimensions based on the largest expected display and the layout—not on a supposed universal thumbnail standard.
The consulted Google guidance recommends optimizing images while maintaining quality, but does not prescribe portfolio-thumbnail dimensions, a byte limit or a compression setting. Avoid presenting a fixed pixel width or file-size target as a standard without reliable evidence for it.
3. Export responsive image renditions
Use a preview rendition rather than making a browser download a full-resolution original for a small card. If the grid renders at different widths on phones, tablets and desktops, provide multiple image widths with srcset and sizes. Use picture when you need format selection or different art direction. Keep a usable src fallback. Google describes these responsive techniques and lists JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF among supported image formats; the guidance does not establish one best format or quality setting for every portfolio. See Google’s image SEO best practices.
Here is an illustrative width-variant pattern. The filenames, sample dimensions, breakpoint and alt text are examples, not a recommended universal preset. Match the width and height attributes to the rendition’s aspect ratio so the browser can reserve the correct space.

Set sizes to reflect the space the image actually occupies in your layout. Check that each URL in srcset exists and that each rendition retains an intentional crop and focal point. If you use a format-specific picture element, retain a fallback image rather than making the page depend on a single source path.

4. Write useful filenames, alt text and nearby context
Replace camera defaults such as DSC_4471.jpg with brief, descriptive filenames that identify the subject or project. Place images near relevant text, such as a project description, location, service category or useful caption. Write alt text that conveys meaningful visual content—for example, “Bride and groom walking through a Jaipur courtyard”—rather than a list of search terms.
Google says alt text helps search engines understand an image and improves accessibility for people who cannot see page images, including screen-reader users. Keep the description accurate to the image; do not add a location, event or specialty that the photograph does not show. See Google’s image guidance.

5. Load the first view promptly and defer the rest
Do not lazy-load a cover image or thumbnail likely to be visible as soon as the page opens. Lazy-loading can defer below-the-fold gallery images, as long as they load as the reader approaches them without requiring a click, and their image URLs are available in rendered HTML. Google warns that incorrect lazy-loading can hide content from its systems; its guidance recommends checking rendered HTML and exposing image URLs in src. See Google’s lazy-loading guidance.
Apply loading behavior according to each image’s position. For example, a portfolio cover may load immediately while later gallery items use deferred loading. Do not assume every image in a gallery is below the fold: inspect the initial page at the screen sizes your layout supports.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Check the published page
- Inspect the grid on phone and desktop. Confirm that crops preserve the intended subject and that the layout behaves as designed.
- Verify responsive alternatives. Check that the browser can retrieve the listed renditions and that the fallback image works.
- Review content and accessibility. Confirm filenames, alt descriptions and nearby project text are accurate and useful.
- Test deferred images. Scroll through the page and ensure below-the-fold images appear without a click or other action.
- Check under constrained network conditions. Use a slow-network emulator or similar method to evaluate whether image loading and visual quality are acceptable. Report performance scores or savings only if you measured the specific page.
These checks reflect Google’s advice to test lazy-loading implementations and audit accessibility. There is no established universal thumbnail export preset, CMS or numeric performance improvement for this use.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of the finished portfolio page for review or documentation, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. It is not a substitute for creating and serving well-sized portfolio thumbnails. Its API can capture the page after accepting cookie or consent banners and removing known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. Example request:
