Use Playwright’s page.pdf() method with displayHeaderFooter: true and a footerTemplate containing Playwright’s pageNumber and totalPages placeholders. By default, the PDF uses print styles; choose screen styles explicitly if that is what you need.
Generate a PDF with page numbers
Install Playwright and its browser binaries, then run this JavaScript example. It opens a page, writes an A4 PDF, and adds a footer such as “1 / 4” to each page.

})();Replace https://example.com with the page to capture. The path option saves the PDF as page.pdf; page.pdf() also returns a buffer if you want to handle the file in your application instead.
How the page-number footer works
Page numbering is supplied by Playwright, not by JavaScript in the template. Enable displayHeaderFooter, then include empty elements with the documented classes in footerTemplate or headerTemplate.

pageNumberis the current page number.totalPagesis the number of pages in the PDF.date,title, andurlare also available as template classes.
The header and footer are off by default. PDF margins also default to zero, so allocate enough space—especially at the bottom for a footer—or it may be crowded by the page content. Header and footer templates do not inherit the page’s styles, and script tags in them are not evaluated. Keep the template self-contained with inline styles.
Choose print or screen styles
page.pdf() renders with print CSS media by default. This is usually appropriate for a document-style PDF and lets the page’s print rules control what appears. To render the page with its screen styles instead, switch media before generating the PDF:

formatselects a named paper size. Letter is the default; A4 and A5 are among the documented formats. Whenformatis set, it takes priority overwidthandheight.preferCSSPageSize: truegives a page’s CSS@pagesize priority over PDF size options. Otherwise, content is scaled to fit the selected paper size.landscapechanges orientation, andscaleadjusts the rendered content size.pageRangeslets you restrict which pages are included.printBackground: trueincludes background graphics; it is false by default.
PDF generation modifies colors for printing by default. If exact colors matter, the API documentation points to the CSS property -webkit-print-color-adjust. Check the page’s print CSS as well as the PDF options when colors or layout differ from the browser view.
Common problems and fixes
- No page numbers appear: Confirm that
displayHeaderFooter: trueis set and that the template uses the exactpageNumberortotalPagesclass names. - The footer overlaps content: Increase the PDF’s bottom margin. Margins are zero by default, and the footer needs reserved paper space.
- Template styles or scripts have no effect: Header and footer templates cannot see the page’s styles, and their script tags do not execute. Put needed styles inline and use the supplied placeholder classes.
- The PDF looks different from the browser: Check whether print media is active, since it is the default. Use
page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' })beforepage.pdf()if you need screen styling. - Paper dimensions or scaling are unexpected: Check whether
formatis overridingwidthorheight, and whetherpreferCSSPageSizeshould let CSS@pagerules control the size. - Backgrounds are missing: Set
printBackground: true. - Output changes after a Playwright update: Each Playwright version requires specific browser binaries. Use the binaries associated with the installed version and consult documentation for that version if option support or output differs.
