For a card thumbnail, a focused, repeatable crop is usually more legible than shrinking a very long full-page screenshot. Playwright supports viewport, full-page, and element screenshots, along with controls for image format, scale, quality, masking, clipping, and injected stylesheets.
Plan the thumbnail workflow
Start with a traceable list of providers. For every capture, keep the original URL and capture date beside the image, as well as the course listing or directory entry it belongs to. That makes it easier to check the destination and refresh a thumbnail when a provider changes its branding or page.
Before capturing a large batch, decide on a card aspect ratio, output format, and image scale. Apply those choices consistently in your directory’s own design system; there is no screenshot-thumbnail standard established here. Use public landing pages, and check a sample of results for the correct course page, incomplete loading, cookie banners, login walls, or stale branding.
Choose what part of each page to capture

For most directory cards, capture the viewport or a relevant element and crop it consistently. Choose a full-page capture only when showing the whole page serves the reader’s purpose. Playwright’s Page API describes full-page capture as taking a screenshot of the full scrollable page rather than only the currently visible viewport.

The following Node.js example uses Playwright to capture the visible viewport of each URL in a list. It creates a browser page at a fixed viewport, waits for the page’s load event, and saves a PNG for each URL. The wait is a starting point, not a guarantee that every script-driven page or delayed image is ready; inspect captures and adjust the wait strategy for the sites in your directory.

}Create the thumbnails directory before running the example. Install Playwright and its browser in your project using the installation instructions in the Playwright documentation. Replace the sample URLs and names with your provider list. Keep a separate record of each source URL and capture date rather than relying on the filename alone.
Capture a full page or a specific element
For a full-page capture, set fullPage: true in the screenshot call. For a target element, locate it and call screenshot on the locator:

A selector that changes when a site is redesigned will need to be updated. If there is no dependable target, capture the viewport and crop it to your directory’s card ratio during post-processing.

Choose format and scale deliberately
Playwright documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshot output. PNG is lossless; JPEG and WebP can use a quality setting to trade some image detail for smaller files. Pick one format and use it consistently. CSS-pixel scale produces a more compact output; device-pixel scale captures more pixels for high-density displays, but can create larger files and dimensions tied to the device scale factor.
Playwright also supports screenshot buffers, so you can process an image before writing it to disk. Its Page API includes controls such as clipping, masking, and injected stylesheets. Use masking or styles to suppress changing or distracting elements when appropriate, then verify that the resulting crop still represents the course page accurately.
Keep captures consistent and review them
Use the same browser, viewport, device scale, capture mode, and relevant browser settings across the batch. Consistency matters because screenshots can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power state, and headless mode. Playwright discusses these sources of visual variation in its visual comparison guidance.

Pages that depend on scripts or delayed image loading may need additional time or a more targeted readiness condition. Waiting for a selector, a short delay, or network activity to settle can help, but no single wait strategy guarantees that every provider site has finished rendering. Review a sample at the actual directory-card size: a page may look fine at full resolution but lose its useful detail when reduced.
- Confirm the capture shows the intended course or provider, not a redirect or unrelated landing page.
- Check for cookie banners, popups, chat widgets, blank areas, and incomplete images.
- Check that the crop and dimensions match the directory card design.
- Record the source URL and capture date so editors can revisit outdated images.
Distinguish a webpage thumbnail from a favicon
A screenshot thumbnail shows a view of a webpage; a favicon is a small icon representing a site. Google’s guidance for favicons in Search says icons must be square and at least 8 by 8 pixels, recommends sizes above 48 by 48 pixels, and notes that display in Search is not guaranteed. Those are Google Search favicon guidelines, not dimensions or rules for course-directory screenshots. See Google’s favicon guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use a favicon as the thumbnail for a course provider?
No. A favicon is a site icon; a thumbnail is a captured view of a webpage. Use whichever asset serves the directory design, but do not treat favicon guidance as a screenshot specification.
Does taking a screenshot mean I can republish it?
No. Capture and permission to publish are separate questions. Check the provider’s terms and get permission or legal review for your intended use.
