You can keep FFmpeg streaming to YouTube after you disconnect from SSH by running it as a systemd service on your Linux VPS. The setup has four parts: get the current RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, configure FFmpeg for a YouTube-supported profile, create and validate a service unit for your distribution, then confirm the broadcast is healthy in YouTube. A service manager can restart a failed process, but it cannot fix an invalid key, missing input, insufficient server capacity, or a YouTube-side problem.
How the setup works
Your media source is read by FFmpeg on the VPS, FFmpeg sends the encoded stream to YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion endpoint, and systemd starts and supervises the FFmpeg process independently of your SSH session. RTMPS carries RTMP over an encrypted connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, and its ingestion guidance specifies port 443 and a hostname used for TLS SNI authentication. Use the exact endpoint shown in Live Control Room rather than guessing a server URL. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMPS; YouTube’s RTMPS help page and RTMPS ingestion guide cover the YouTube endpoint requirements.
This guide applies to a Linux VPS, but the exact OVHcloud plan, Linux image, installed FFmpeg build, and systemd version are not specified here. Check those details on your instance before deploying. Do not assume a plan can encode a particular resolution or sustain a bitrate: measure the actual host’s CPU and outbound connection under the intended workload.
What you need before creating the service
- A Linux VPS with systemd and an account permitted to install software and configure services.
- An input that FFmpeg can read, such as a local media file or a live source. Input options differ: looping a file, receiving a camera/capture feed, and relaying an RTSP source are not interchangeable setups.
- An installed FFmpeg build that supports your selected codecs, input, and RTMPS output. Package versions and build features vary by distribution; verify the installed build rather than assuming a package includes every required component.
- A YouTube live event or stream, plus its current RTMPS URL and stream key.
- Outbound network access from the VPS to the YouTube RTMPS endpoint on port 443.
Get the current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the live event or stream you intend to use.
- In the Stream URL field, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy that URL and the stream key into your encoder configuration. The exact current URL and key must come from the event in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, paste it into screenshots, or put it in a world-readable service file. Use permissions and a secret-handling method appropriate to your distribution; verify the chosen method against its systemd and operating-system documentation.
If you suspect a key has been exposed, manage or replace it through YouTube Studio before restarting the service with the updated credential.

Choose FFmpeg settings that match YouTube and your VPS
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked 2026-10-03, lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC. YouTube lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1; its audio bitrate figures are 128 Kbps stereo and 384 Kbps 5.1. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table when choosing a profile.

YouTube’s table also has separate H.265/HEVC and AV1 bitrate recommendations; do not reuse the H.264 figures for those codecs. For example, its listed recommendations for H.265/AV1 are 10 Mbps at 1080p30, 12 Mbps at 1080p60, and 6 Mbps at both 720p30 and 720p60. Consult the live table for the exact codec and profile, and confirm your FFmpeg build supports the encoder you select.

Allow for audio and normal network variation beyond the video bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload speed; on a VPS, measure outbound performance from the server that will send the stream, not just from your home connection. Encoding load is also workload- and host-dependent, so benchmark with representative motion and audio on the actual VPS rather than inferring capacity from a plan name.
Test the FFmpeg command before systemd
First run FFmpeg interactively and confirm that YouTube receives a healthy preview. FFmpeg’s documented real-time file-to-RTMP pattern is ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. It is a general RTMP illustration, not a complete YouTube command. For YouTube, substitute your chosen input and encoding options, use the exact RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, and provide the stream key using a secure method. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build accepts the selected RTMPS output and that the output format and encoder options match the build.
Do not copy a generic command as if it were universal. A local file, a looping playlist, and a live input need different input handling. For an ongoing event, verify that your chosen input continues to produce frames and audio; configure reconnect or looping behavior only for the source that requires it. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Keep the event in preview until the picture, sound, and stream health are correct.

Create and validate a systemd service
There is no single safe unit file for every distribution or FFmpeg command. Before writing one, check the systemd manual and your distribution’s service conventions for unit syntax, the service user, restart behavior, environment-file permissions, and applicable hardening settings. In particular, ensure the unit runs under an account that can read the media source but does not expose the stream key to other users. Validate the finished unit with the tools and procedures documented for the systemd version on your VPS; do not assume a directive or restart policy behaves identically across versions.
Set the service’s start command to the exact FFmpeg command that succeeded interactively, with any secret supplied through the protected mechanism you selected. Choose restart behavior deliberately: automatic restarts can recover from a process exit, but a permanently bad key or unreachable endpoint can create a repeated failure cycle. Make sure logs are available to diagnose the cause instead of treating repeated restarts as proof that the stream is working.

Start-up and ongoing verification
- Reload the systemd manager after adding or changing the unit, using the command documented for your distribution and systemd version.
- Start the service and inspect its state and logs using the systemd commands supported on the VPS. Confirm FFmpeg is actually running and emitting output rather than relying on the service’s active state alone.
- Open the matching event in YouTube Live Control Room. Verify preview, stream health, and any messages shown there before making the broadcast public or scheduling it to start.
- Disconnect from SSH, then reconnect and check the service and YouTube preview again. This confirms the stream does not depend on your interactive shell.
- During the broadcast, monitor both FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream health and messages. A running process does not prove YouTube is receiving a valid, healthy stream.
Preflight checklist before going live
- The service points to the intended YouTube event and the current key.
- The RTMPS URL is copied exactly from Live Control Room; outbound access to the endpoint on port 443 works.
- The installed FFmpeg build supports the selected input, codec, and RTMPS output.
- Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings match the intended YouTube profile.
- The VPS has been tested with representative media and has measured compute and outbound capacity for the workload.
- The preview has visible movement and audible, synchronized sound, and YouTube reports acceptable stream health.
- The unit and key-storage method have been checked against the actual systemd version and distribution conventions.
Troubleshoot common failures
The service exits immediately
Inspect the service logs and run the same FFmpeg command interactively under the service’s intended user. Common causes include a mistyped input path, unreadable media, unsupported encoder options, a missing FFmpeg feature, or an invalid unit command. Fix the underlying error before relying on automatic restarts.

FFmpeg runs, but YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that the selected event, stream key, and RTMPS URL belong together and are current. Confirm the URL’s protocol and server are correct and that the VPS can make the RTMPS connection on port 443. YouTube’s developer guidance requires port 443 and the correct hostname for SNI; its RTMPS troubleshooting page also advises checking protocol and server when an SSL error persists.
YouTube reports an unhealthy stream or poor quality
Compare the sent codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings with the current YouTube table. Check FFmpeg output and YouTube’s stream messages, then test the VPS’s actual outbound capacity and encoding load with the same type of content. A higher target bitrate is not automatically better if the server cannot sustain it.
The stream stops after SSH disconnects
If FFmpeg was launched in the interactive shell rather than through the service, it may end with that session. Start it through the validated systemd unit and confirm both service state and YouTube preview after disconnecting. If the unit is active but the stream is absent, investigate FFmpeg logs and YouTube connectivity rather than the SSH session.
