For a pre-packaged commodity covered by India’s Legal Metrology rules, the package’s retail sale price (RSP), commonly called MRP, is inclusive of taxes, including GST. That does not mean every price shown on a product page is the package MRP or that a screenshot proves how the seller calculated tax. Check the label beside the amount, preserve listing context, and compare the details with the invoice when available.
What a product-page screenshot can—and cannot—show
A screenshot records what appeared on a page at a particular point in a browsing session. It can help document a displayed price, but by itself it does not establish the product’s GST classification or applicable rate, the seller’s tax treatment, or the final amount payable at checkout.
For packaged commodities within the scope of Legal Metrology rules, RSP is the maximum price at which the package may be sold to the consumer and includes all taxes. Check that the rule applies to the item and that no specific exception or later amendment changes the analysis. Do not treat every online price, subtotal, or checkout line as package MRP.
CBIC’s GST Rates FAQs state, in a footwear example, that “retail sale price declared on the package is inclusive of GST.” The Department of Consumer Affairs’ packaged-commodities FAQ says GST is included in MRP and is not to be charged over it. The latter is GST-era guidance, and the notification defining RSP is from 2017; confirm the current consolidated rules for a product-specific legal question. Identify which amount the screenshot labels
Read the wording next to each amount instead of assuming that the largest or most prominent number is MRP. Keep distinct amounts distinct in your notes:
- MRP or RSP: the price declared on the package, subject to the packaged-commodity rules’ scope.
- Offer or sale price: a listing price that may be below the package MRP. Its label alone does not establish its tax breakdown.
- Taxable value or tax-inclusive value: use the page’s exact wording; do not infer which it means from the number alone.
- Delivery, handling, or other charges: note them separately. They can affect the order total and may not be visible in a product-page capture.
- Checkout total: a later-stage amount that may reflect selected delivery details, discounts, or other adjustments.
Also record the selected variant and quantity. A screenshot for one size, model, or pack count does not necessarily describe another.

Capture enough context to make the price check useful
- Preserve the page URL and capture date and time. A static image may not independently establish when the listing was live.
- Record the seller and item description. Preserve the visible seller name and enough product detail to identify the goods.
- Note the selected size, model, and quantity. Include the displayed currency and amount.
- Copy every relevant price and label. Note the package MRP, offer price, crossed-out price, discounts, and any wording about tax.
- Record delivery context. Note the delivery location, shipping or handling charges, and whether login, a coupon, or checkout appears to affect the amount—or state that these are not visible.
- Keep the original image. If you annotate a copy, retain the unaltered screenshot as well so the labels and context remain verifiable.
These details matter because a listing can be viewed before a variant or location is selected, before a coupon is applied, or before delivery charges and checkout adjustments appear. If the screenshot does not show those details, say so rather than filling them in by assumption.

Tax amount = inclusive value × tax rate ÷ (100 + tax rate)
For example, using an illustrative 18% rate, an inclusive amount of ₹1,180 contains ₹180 in tax: ₹1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹180. The corresponding pre-tax amount is ₹1,000. This is an arithmetic example, not evidence that an unspecified product is taxed at 18%.

CBIC’s FAQ gives an 18% rate and a ₹500-per-pair RSP threshold in a footwear example. These values are specific to that category example, not a general GST rate or threshold. The correct rate depends on classification and applicable current rules; a product image alone cannot establish it. CGST Rules, Part A, Rule 35; CBIC GST Rates FAQs.
Use the invoice to corroborate the listing
A tax invoice is stronger corroboration of the transaction’s tax details than a product-page screenshot. Compare the invoice’s supplier identity, invoice date, goods description and quantity, taxable value, rate, and tax amount with what the screenshot records. CBIC lists particulars required on a tax invoice; depending on the supply and taxpayer, the document may instead be a bill of supply, which has different tax details.

If the invoice and screenshot show different amounts, first check whether they refer to the same seller, item variant, quantity, date, delivery context, and stage of the purchase. A difference alone does not establish that GST was added over package MRP. CBIC: Tax Invoice, Credit and Debit Notes.

Capture it yourself in a browser
- Open the listing and select the relevant seller, variant, and quantity.
- Set or record the delivery location if it is needed to show shipping or availability details.
- Capture the page with the URL and the important price labels visible. If the offer and package MRP appear in separate areas, take additional captures rather than cropping away their context.
- Proceed to checkout only if you need to document a checkout-stage total; do not imply that a product-page capture shows that total.
- Save the original capture and note the date and time. Record any material details that are not visible in the image.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request can capture a page; it accepts the URL and returns an image or PDF. For a quick listing capture, use this cURL example and replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/product -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. None of these capture features verifies a listing’s tax classification or makes a screenshot proof of the final tax treatment.
ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating every visible price as MRP: check the exact label and distinguish package RSP from offer price and order total.
- Assuming a screenshot proves tax was added—or not added: use it as evidence of what appeared, then compare the invoice and relevant product rules.
- Applying a familiar rate without verifying classification: establish the product classification and current applicable rate independently before calculating embedded GST.
- Ignoring incomplete context: note when seller, location, variant, timestamp, discounts, delivery fees, or checkout details are missing.
- Calling an invoice a tax invoice without checking: an exempt supply or composition taxpayer may issue a bill of supply with different tax details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot alone prove that GST was charged correctly?
No. It documents what the page displayed, but does not by itself establish the product’s classification, applicable rate, seller’s tax calculation, or final payable amount.
Is 18% the GST rate for every product shown online?
No. The cited 18% figure is from a CBIC footwear example; rates depend on classification and applicable rules.
