To detect a price change, extract text from screenshots with OCR, identify the likely offer price, normalize it, and compare it with a prior observation of the same product and variant. OCR gives you text—not a reliable label saying which number is the current price—so preserve the screenshot and flag ambiguous results for review.
What OCR can—and cannot—tell you
Optical character recognition (OCR) turns visible text in an image into machine-readable text. Google Cloud Vision documents text detection that returns both detected text and individual words with bounding boxes, which can help locate a number relative to a product title or offer area. Google Cloud Vision’s OCR documentation describes the available modes and output.
OCR does not determine which amount is the authoritative price. A product page may show a crossed-out list price, a subscription price, installment amounts, shipping, coupon text, or prices for other items. Selecting the actual offer is application logic you must implement and validate.
Build a reliable screenshot-to-price workflow
- Capture consistently. Use the same product page, variant, locale, and comparable offer conditions each time. Define an interval appropriate to how often the price is likely to change.
- Keep the observation record. Store the original screenshot with its capture timestamp, URL or product identifier, selected variant, locale, and currency when known. Retaining the image lets you audit OCR output and investigate false alerts.
- Run OCR. Submit the image to an OCR service or a suitable local engine. For a typical web-page screenshot, start by evaluating general image text detection rather than assuming a document-oriented mode is better.
- Find candidate amounts. Use recognized words and their bounding boxes to identify currency amounts near the product title and offer area. Use page-specific rules where necessary; do not treat the first number returned as the price.
- Normalize carefully. Convert recognized text into a consistent representation while preserving the raw OCR string. Account for currency symbols, decimal and thousands separators, and locale-specific formatting. Keep currency attached to the value; do not compare amounts in different currencies as if they were the same.
- Compare observations. Compare the normalized candidate with the previous observation for the same product, variant, and comparable offer conditions. Record both values and their capture times.
- Review uncertain cases. Flag weak OCR, multiple plausible prices, or an unexpected currency or format for confirmation rather than silently issuing a definitive price-change alert.
Choose an OCR mode for the page image
Cloud Vision documents two relevant modes. TEXT_DETECTION detects text in an image and returns the full extracted string plus individual words and bounding boxes. DOCUMENT_TEXT_DETECTION is optimized for dense text and returns a more hierarchical structure, including page, block, paragraph, word, and break information. For ordinary product-page screenshots, general image text detection is a reasonable starting point to evaluate; validate it on screenshots representative of your sites, languages, image quality, and price formats. The documentation does not establish that either mode is more accurate for product-price monitoring.

Google describes Cloud Vision as able to extract text and handwriting from images and lists support for immediate processing of up to 16 images and asynchronous batch processing of up to 2,000 images per request on its OCR use-case page. Those are service capabilities, not a recommended monitoring schedule or a guarantee about your workload.
AWS describes Amazon Textract as a machine-learning service for extracting printed text, handwriting, layout elements, and data from scanned documents; its Detect Document Text API uses OCR. It is another service to evaluate, not a proven winner for web screenshots. The cited vendor information does not provide a head-to-head benchmark for product-page screenshots.

Costs and scale to check before deployment
Google Cloud’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists the first 1,000 units per month as free. It lists Text Detection and Document Text Detection at $1.50 per 1,000 units for units 1,001–5,000,000, with a lower listed rate above that tier. The page notes that rates can depend on payment currency and tier; check the current Cloud Vision pricing for your account and region before estimating costs.
Google’s OCR use-case page gives a $27.36 estimated monthly cost example based on assumptions including 15,000 monthly Cloud Vision OCR API calls and related infrastructure. That is a worked example, not a universal estimate for a price-monitoring system. Your own cost depends on image volume, service units, infrastructure, and processing choices.

Neither the cited Google nor AWS material establishes accuracy rates for selecting product prices from screenshots. Test representative captures—including your target locales and page layouts—and measure your own extraction and selection errors before relying on automated alerts.
Troubleshooting missed or false price changes
- The extracted value is a crossed-out price or installment. Inspect the screenshot and bounding boxes, then refine candidate selection around the actual offer area. Route pages with multiple plausible amounts to review.
- A decimal or thousands separator is misread. Preserve the raw OCR text and parse it using the page’s locale. Do not normalize an ambiguous string into a numeric price without a validation rule.
- The alert compares unlike offers. Check product identifier, selected variant, locale, currency, and offer conditions in both observation records. If any differ, mark the comparison as non-comparable instead of declaring a price change.
- Text is absent or incomplete. Check whether the relevant price was visible in the saved screenshot and whether the image quality, language, or page rendering changed. Re-capture or review the image before treating missing OCR as a price of zero.
- Results vary across sites. Evaluate screenshots from each intended site and format. General OCR capabilities do not establish reliable candidate selection for every layout.

Can I compare screenshots taken in different currencies?
Not as a direct price-change comparison. Keep currency and locale with each observation, or convert using a separately defined exchange-rate policy.
Is Google Cloud Vision more accurate than Amazon Textract for product screenshots?
The cited vendor material does not provide a comparative benchmark for product-page screenshots. Evaluate both against representative pages if provider choice depends on accuracy.
