You can screenshot an age verification prompt while it is visible in your browser. The image records only what that browser session can see; it does not unlock the product page or authorize access to gated content. If you are authorized to view the page, complete the site’s own verification flow before capturing the content.
Choose what the screenshot needs to show
Use a viewport capture to document the prompt as it appears on screen. Choose an element capture when you need a particular visible part of the page, or a full-page capture when the authorized session can access more content below the fold. A full-page image cannot include content hidden behind a gate the session has not passed.
- Visual appearance: Take a screenshot to preserve layout, colors, and the visible prompt.
- Page structure or text: Use an accessibility snapshot or another text-based inspection method. It is often more useful than an image for understanding page structure. See Playwright’s accessibility testing documentation.
Capture the prompt manually
- Open the product page in a browser and leave the age prompt visible in the state you need to document.
- Use the browser’s built-in screenshot capability or your operating system’s screenshot shortcut. Ensure the captured area includes the prompt and any surrounding page context needed to interpret it.
- Save the image without altering the prompt or implying that the screenshot shows content behind it.
- If the record may be reviewed later, note the page URL, date and time, browser, viewport dimensions, and any relevant capture settings alongside the file.
Automate the capture with Playwright
Playwright can capture the viewport, a selected element, or the full page. Its screenshot API supports options such as output path, image type, scale, clipping, and full-page capture. The example below takes a viewport screenshot of the page in the browser session; it does not bypass an age check.

Respect the verification gate
When the prompt blocks product details, either document the prompt as shown or use the site’s own verification flow if you are authorized to proceed. Do not tamper with the gate, falsify age information, or rely on undocumented workarounds. A screenshot documents a browser state; it does not grant access or establish a general legal right to access or reproduce a page.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The image shows a blank or incomplete page: The page may not have rendered before capture, or access may be blocked. Check the browser session manually and the page’s visible state; do not treat a blank capture as proof that hidden content was available.
- Navigation times out: The site may load slowly or wait on long-running resources. Increase the navigation timeout only as needed, and consider waiting for
domcontentloadedrather than all network activity. A timeout does not justify bypassing the gate. - The prompt is cut off: Increase the viewport dimensions or capture the prompt element. Record the viewport if the screenshot is evidence for later review.
- A full-page image does not include gated details: Full-page capture extends the rendered page, not the browser’s authorization. Complete the site’s official verification flow if you are eligible and permitted.
- The page changes between runs: Prompts and product pages can vary by session or time. Keep the URL, capture time, browser, viewport, and relevant settings with each image so reviewers understand the conditions.
Age-verification context varies by jurisdiction
Age-check rules and implementations are not universal. The European Commission describes an EU approach intended to help users prove they meet the age threshold for legally age-restricted sites, starting with over-18 access; it says the solution became feature ready on 15 April 2026. That is EU-specific context, not a rule for every country or site: European Commission age verification information.

In February 2026, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced a limited COPPA policy statement concerning certain general- or mixed-audience operators using personal information solely to determine age, subject to conditions including reasonable steps to use a method likely to provide reasonably accurate age results.
