Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First identify whether audio is consistently early or late, gradually drifts out of sync, jumps at each loop boundary, or is choppy. Those are different problems: -itsoffset can correct a measured constant timestamp offset, while input pacing and frame-rate settings serve other purposes. No single FFmpeg option guarantees synchronization for every file or build.
Diagnose the kind of sync problem
Watch a representative section of the outgoing stream and compare visible events—such as a clap, a spoken consonant, or an instrument strike—with their sound. Note whether the mismatch stays roughly constant, grows during playback, changes abruptly when the clip repeats, or comes with dropped or choppy media. These patterns help narrow the investigation, but none proves a particular cause on its own.
- Constant lead or lag: investigate a fixed timestamp offset. Measure which stream leads and by how much before changing timestamps.
- Growing drift: inspect source timestamps, stream durations, frame rate, and audio sample rate. A fixed offset will not correct an error that accumulates over time.
- Jump at the loop boundary: check that the source audio and video share the intended timeline and that their timestamps and durations behave as expected when repeated.
- Choppiness or dropped media: investigate pacing, frame-rate conversion, encoding, and ingest health separately from a simple lead or lag.
For useful diagnostics, record ffmpeg -version, the complete FFmpeg command with the stream key removed, input stream details from ffprobe, and relevant logs. Never publish your YouTube stream key: YouTube says it functions like a stream password and address (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).
Inspect the source timeline before changing the command
Check the input’s video and audio stream start times, durations, frame rate, sample rate, and timestamps. Confirm that the audio and video actually correspond to the same intended events and timeline. Compare the start and end of a single play with the point where the loop repeats; a discontinuity at that boundary calls for investigating the source and its timestamps, not blindly adding an offset.

Use the options documented for your installed FFmpeg version. Run ffmpeg -version to identify the build, and consult ffmpeg -h full or the help for the relevant option. The online FFmpeg documentation explains current options, but your build and command still matter. Put input options before the input they affect and output options near the output they affect.
Loop and pace a prerecorded file deliberately
For prerecorded file-to-live output, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop input option can repeat an input; -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping. The -re input option paces reading at the file’s native rate—FFmpeg documents it as equivalent to -readrate 1. Pacing helps deliver a file in real time; it is not an audio-sync correction. See the FFmpeg manual and verify option behavior with your installed build.

A schematic command shape is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "INPUT_FILE" [input-specific options] -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 [chosen video and audio encoding options] -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This is not a universal copy-and-run command. Replace the placeholders with your input, the RTMPS ingest URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, and encoding options appropriate for the file and your FFmpeg build. Keep the real key private, including in screenshots and diagnostic logs. The command maps the first video and audio streams; adjust mapping if your file’s streams differ. Do not add a measured-offset option unless the tests below establish that a fixed offset is the problem.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
The -re advice here is for reading a prerecorded file. FFmpeg’s pacing documentation warns against using a low read rate to slow down actual capture or live inputs, where packet loss can result.
Choose a remedy that matches the evidence
| Symptom or setting | What it changes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Audio is consistently early or late | -itsoffset adds an offset to input timestamps. |
Measure the fixed error and identify which input needs its timestamps shifted. Place the option before the input it affects, confirm the sign for the direction you need, and test the result. Do not guess an offset. |
| Audio/video error accumulates | A fixed timestamp shift changes the starting relationship, not the rate at which error grows. | Inspect stream timestamps, durations, frame rate, and sample rate. Use observations to select any timestamp, resampling, or encoding adjustment; there is no universal value to apply. |
| Mismatch changes at each loop | Looping repeats the input; it does not establish that its streams join continuously. | Inspect the source’s timing and the transition between repetitions. Do not assume -stream_loop -1 alone guarantees sync. |
| Video cadence or frame rate is the issue | -fps_mode controls video frame synchronization. passthrough passes demuxer timestamps; cfr duplicates or drops frames to reach a requested constant rate; vfr passes frames with timestamps or drops duplicates; auto selects according to muxer capability. |
Choose a mode only when your timeline and output requirements justify it. It is not a universal audio-sync switch, and FFmpeg notes that muxer processing can further change timestamps. |
| File is not being delivered in real time | -re paces file reading at its native rate. |
Use it as a pacing control for prerecorded input, not as a way to repair drift or to slow down an actual live capture. |
FFmpeg documents -itsoffset, input looping, and -fps_mode in its official manual. Avoid reflexively following old -vsync or -async advice: check your version and current option documentation before using legacy guidance. Do not add -shortest to an indefinite stream without a specific reason; FFmpeg documents it as ending encoding when the shortest output stream ends, which can defeat continuous output.

Match YouTube ingest settings, then test the actual stream
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For audio, it lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround, with 128 kbps stereo and 384 kbps 5.1 surround. Its video bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current table rather than treating one bitrate as a universal sync fix.
- Set compatible encoder and audio parameters for the planned stream using YouTube’s current guide. A matching ingest configuration can aid compatibility; it does not repair a bad source timeline.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, test before starting the intended broadcast. Include both sound and visible movement similar to the planned stream.
- Watch the preview for audio/video alignment, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while it runs. A successful FFmpeg command or connected ingest status alone does not confirm sync.
- If the error appears only after the stream reaches YouTube, compare the local output with the Control Room preview and use the timestamps and logs to narrow down where it enters the pipeline.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Get the ingest URL and key from Live Control Room, protect the key, and see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance for setup details.

Common mistakes that do not fix drift
- Assuming
-stream_loop -1alone synchronizes streams across repeated boundaries. - Applying an arbitrary
-itsoffsetwithout measuring which stream leads and by how much. - Treating
-reas a sync fix instead of a way to pace prerecorded file reading. - Using
-fps_mode cfras a blanket audio-sync solution; it can duplicate or drop video frames. - Expecting YouTube’s bitrate, keyframe, audio, or transcoding settings to repair incorrect incoming timestamps.
- Sharing a real stream key in commands, screenshots, or logs.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from diagnosing an FFmpeg timestamp problem: it plays uploaded videos and does not correct an existing file’s sync error. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
