Choose dimensions that show the price and product
First decide what each image needs to communicate. A price alone may be hard to interpret later; include enough nearby context, such as the product name or image, to identify the item. The retailer’s page layout and your intended use determine the required dimensions. Playwright’s example viewport of 1280 × 720 is a configuration example, not a product-price standard. Set and reuse the viewport in Playwright
Set both width and height explicitly in the browser context. For example, this Node.js script opens a product page in a fixed viewport and saves the visible viewport as a PNG. Replace the URL and dimensions with values appropriate for your page.

Keep viewport, device scale, and screenshot scale distinct
Viewport dimensions are CSS-pixel dimensions of the browser’s page area. Device scale factor is a separate context setting that represents emulated device pixel density. Screenshot scale controls the relationship between CSS pixels and output-image pixels: Playwright’s css scale produces one output pixel per CSS pixel, while device scale uses the emulated device density and can create larger high-density images. - For straightforward comparisons, choose a device scale factor and screenshot scale, then keep both unchanged.
- Use CSS scale when you want output dimensions to correspond one-to-one with CSS pixels.
- Use device scale when the capture should reflect the emulated device’s pixel density; account for the resulting output size.
Choose viewport-only or full-page capture
A viewport screenshot records only what is currently visible. A full-page screenshot includes the scrollable page, so it changes the framing and image dimensions. Use viewport-only capture when the price and product context fit in the chosen view. Use full-page capture when the relevant content extends below the fold and a longer image is useful. Keep the mode consistent across captures you intend to compare. Playwright screenshot documentation

Hold the browser environment steady
Matching viewport settings cannot guarantee pixel-identical results if the browser or machine differs. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its visual comparison guidance says: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” Playwright visual comparison documentation
For a comparison series, use the same browser build and execution environment as the baseline where practical. Record the viewport width and height, device scale factor, screenshot scale, browser and version, and capture date alongside the image or in metadata. These details make a changed capture easier to diagnose.

Check the capture before relying on it
- Confirm the price is visible and legible.
- Check that the product identity is also in frame.
- Verify that viewport dimensions, device scale factor, screenshot scale, and capture mode match the prior run.
- If images are being compared pixel by pixel, confirm the browser version and execution environment have not changed.
Troubleshoot inconsistent screenshots
The price is missing or clipped
The selected viewport may not expose the price or enough product context. Adjust width or height for the page, then use those revised dimensions consistently. The documentation does not prescribe one size that works for every retailer.
The saved image has unexpected dimensions
Check whether the screenshot uses CSS or device scale and whether the device scale factor changed. Also verify whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page; full-page output includes scrollable content.

Images differ despite identical viewport dimensions
Viewport equality alone does not control rendering. Check the browser version, operating system, headless mode, settings, hardware, and power conditions, and compare within the same environment as the baseline when possible.
