Yes—videos with different resolutions can play during one continuous YouTube Live event. YouTube receives one live feed from your encoder and transcodes that feed into playback formats for viewers. Set a stable encoder output, connect one stream session, and test the full playlist: how clips are scaled, cropped, or transitioned depends on the encoder you use.

How mixed-resolution clips work in one live event

Your source files do not all have to share the same dimensions. The encoder sends YouTube a single live output; YouTube then creates multiple playback formats from that incoming feed. YouTube describes this behavior in its live encoder settings guidance.

That does not mean every playlist encoder handles changes between files identically. A 720p clip followed by a 1080p clip might be scaled to a fixed canvas, appear with bars, be cropped, or trigger a transition. Aspect ratio, frame rate, audio format, and the encoder’s playlist behavior all matter. YouTube’s general guidance does not promise how a particular encoder will handle those changes.

Prepare the video playlist

  1. Put clips in the intended order. Build the sequence in the encoder or playback tool you plan to use.
  2. Check each file. Note its resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, audio format, and duration. Look for clips with unusual framing or silent sections that could make a change more noticeable.
  3. Choose a consistent output canvas. Use an output resolution and frame rate that your encoder and upload connection can sustain. A higher-resolution source does not require you to send a higher-resolution live feed.
  4. Check framing and audio in the encoder. Confirm whether it scales, letterboxes, crops, or otherwise fits each clip to the output canvas. Verify audio levels and continuity between files.

Do not assume that mixed-resolution playback automatically means clean, seamless transitions. Test the exact playlist in the selected encoder before broadcasting publicly.

Choose output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you have a reason to control the incoming feed manually, YouTube says manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key. Pick settings your system and network can sustain, then use the current YouTube bitrate guidance for the incoming codec, resolution, and frame rate—not just the nominal resolution of one source file. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include:

Incoming output Recommended H.264 bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
2160p at 30 fps 30 Mbps

These are YouTube’s platform recommendations in its encoder guidance accessed in 2026, not a guarantee of picture quality on every source or connection. Check the current bitrate table and codec combinations before you configure a stream, since guidance can change. YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds for RTMP/RTMPS. Supported codec combinations depend on the stream setup.

Use the highest output you can sustain reliably, rather than setting the encoder to the largest resolution in the playlist. Upload capacity and encoder performance matter; test your connection and leave headroom rather than operating at its limit.

Connect one encoder session to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP settings. A stream key lets an encoder connect to your channel’s stream, so treat it like a password; do not publish or share it. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  3. Start the encoder output and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the incoming feed is recognized before starting the public event.
  4. When the broadcast is over, end the event with YouTube’s stream controls and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish how longer streams will be archived.

Keep one encoder session and feed connected through the sequence if the goal is one continuous event. Whether your particular playlist encoder can move between files without interrupting that feed is a feature to verify in its documentation and in a full test.

Choose RTMP/RTMPS or HLS only for the right reason

Ingest option When it fits Trade-off or requirement
RTMP/RTMPS Standard live encoder workflows; YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder settings guidance. Use the protocol and codec combination supported by your encoder and stream setup. YouTube’s keyframe guidance for RTMP/RTMPS is two seconds recommended, no more than four.
HLS Use cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP; YouTube lists OBS among HLS-capable encoders. Higher latency than RTMP. YouTube requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range mode.

Different source resolutions alone are not a reason to choose HLS. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance describes its role in relation to ingest support and requirements, not playlist resolution changes.

Test the entire sequence before going public

Test with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast; YouTube recommends testing before an event. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, and include at least one clip for each materially different format in your playlist.

Troubleshoot common problems

A clip looks cropped, stretched, or surrounded by bars

The encoder may be fitting the source to a fixed output canvas differently from what you expected. Check its scaling or aspect-ratio controls and test each distinct aspect ratio. Avoid changing the live output dimensions mid-event just to match a source file unless your encoder and workflow have been tested for that change.

The broadcast freezes or drops when a clip changes

The playlist tool may be restarting its encoder output between files, or the computer may not be keeping up. Verify that the tool supports continuous playlist output, check encoder load, and run the sequence end to end before the public stream. YouTube’s general setup documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted transitions in third-party playlist software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stream health indicator reports problems

Compare the incoming codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current recommendations. Check upload stability and reduce the output settings if the encoder or connection cannot sustain them. Do not raise bitrate based only on the resolution of one clip.

The stream does not appear in the preview

Confirm that the encoder is using the correct stream URL and key for the selected event, that it is actively sending, and that its protocol and codec match the configured stream. If the key may have been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before reconnecting.

Audio changes between clips

Compare the files’ audio levels and formats in the encoder or an editor, then normalize or adjust them before building the playlist. Test the actual transitions; settings that work for one clip do not prove that every clip will sound consistent.

Copyright and channel policy still apply

Using prerecorded clips does not change the need to have rights to the video and audio you broadcast. Check licenses and permissions for every element, including music, before going live. YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance covers stream connection, not a blanket permission to rebroadcast material. Also consider whether the channel’s content meets YouTube’s applicable monetization and reused-content policies; technical continuity does not determine policy eligibility.
