You can run OBS on an OVHcloud VPS and send its output to YouTube Live, but first verify that the specific VPS image and plan can support OBS’s Linux display requirements, your chosen encoding workload, and a stable outbound stream. The available information does not establish which OVHcloud plans meet those needs. Install OBS for the VPS’s Linux distribution, configure YouTube’s stream URL and key in OBS, use YouTube-compatible encoder settings, then test and monitor the complete setup before relying on it.
Check that the VPS can actually run OBS
OBS has Linux installation instructions and lists OpenGL 3.3 compatibility and an X Window System or Wayland as requirements. Those software requirements do not confirm that a particular cloud VPS image provides a usable display environment or graphics support. A VPS that can run Linux is not automatically suitable for running OBS.
Before choosing or configuring a plan, verify its current specifications and terms with OVHcloud. In particular, check:
- Whether the selected Linux image can provide the display stack OBS needs, including the required OpenGL compatibility.
- Whether the available CPU and any graphics support can encode your actual scene at your intended resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Whether the VPS has enough sustained outbound network capacity for the selected bitrate, with room for normal variation.
- Whether the provider’s current terms permit your intended continuous media-streaming use.
No specific OVHcloud tier can be recommended here: current plan capabilities, network limits, and terms have not been established. Confirm them directly before committing to a long-running setup.

Install OBS and create a simple scene
Use the installation instructions for your current Linux distribution and VPS image. OBS’s published Linux installation article is dated 2021, so check current distribution and package guidance rather than assuming an example command remains appropriate for your image. OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and provides Ubuntu package instructions.
- Install the required Linux display environment. Confirm that the image and display stack meet OBS’s Linux requirements before troubleshooting OBS itself.
- Install OBS using instructions for your distribution. Follow the current package or Flathub instructions applicable to that system.
- Launch OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Treat its output as a starting point, not proof that the VPS can operate reliably for days.
- Create a scene and add the sources you intend to broadcast. Check that each source appears and behaves as expected in the preview.
- Check the audio mixer. Confirm that intended audio sources produce meter activity, and that unwanted sources are not being sent.
- Review OBS output settings. Set the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to a profile that both YouTube accepts and the VPS can sustain.
If the program is meant to play prerecorded material, make sure the video and audio sources continue through the intended content and any transitions or loops you configure. A short preview is not a substitute for a long stability test.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend OBS to feed.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s connection credential.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the server URL and stream key, or choose the available YouTube connection workflow and provide the key when prompted.
- Apply the settings and confirm that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube event. Check the YouTube preview and stream health before making the stream public.
Keep the stream key private. Do not show it in screenshots, publish it in a configuration file, or place it in a command that may be logged or shared. If it is exposed, reset it through YouTube’s stream-key controls in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement key.
Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.

For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these examples. They are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that your VPS or its network connection can sustain the output.

These bitrate figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. They apply to the specified H.264 resolution and frame rate; do not treat them as universal settings for other codecs or output formats. Choose a bitrate based on the stable outbound capacity you have verified and the encoding resources actually available on the VPS. A nominal network rate is not proof of continuous stability.

In OBS, set the selected encoder to CBR and use a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes that control. Select a supported codec and frame rate, then test the actual output. Higher resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity can increase encoding and network demands, so start with a profile the VPS can sustain rather than choosing settings based only on the desired picture quality.

- Start with a private or unlisted test. Verify the OBS preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room before broadcasting publicly.
- Test representative content. Use audio and motion similar to the real program; a static test image may not reveal problems that occur during the actual stream.
- Inspect YouTube’s stream health and messages. Confirm that the incoming video and audio are correct and watch for warnings or interruptions.
- Check OBS for dropped frames and encoding strain. A successful start only proves that the connection worked at that moment.
- Run a longer stability check. A few minutes is useful for an initial test, but it does not establish that the setup will remain stable around the clock.
OBS troubleshooting notes that dropped frames commonly point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reduce bitrate based on stable upload performance and investigate the VPS and network path; do not assume every dropped frame is an OBS software fault.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance says rewind capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A single uninterrupted 24/7 event is longer than both documented thresholds, so do not count on the under-12-hour automatic archive behavior or unlimited rewind for it.
Decide whether a continuous event or shorter managed sessions better fit your archive and replay needs. If you plan to split sessions, test the restart and handoff process and verify current YouTube behavior for the specific live workflow; the documented thresholds alone do not establish what will happen to every 24/7 configuration.
