Yes—but the right method depends on what you mean by a “break.” To switch between a live camera, prerecorded video, and a custom break screen, use an encoder such as OBS Studio and switch its scenes. YouTube Live Control Room also has a Take a Break overlay, which can show a temporary away screen or eligible channel video. Scheduled mid-rolls are different: they schedule possible ads, not a predictable prerecorded intermission.

For exact control over what is on screen, use encoder scenes. For a short away screen, use Take a Break. Use mid-roll controls only when your goal is advertising.
Switch from a live camera to prerecorded video in OBS
OBS sends a composed program feed to YouTube through an encoder connection. YouTube hosts the live event, while OBS determines which camera, media, graphics, and audio appear in that feed. The exact OBS and YouTube labels can vary as their interfaces change.
- Schedule the YouTube event if you want an upcoming event page. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Scheduling creates the YouTube event; it does not schedule future changes among OBS scenes. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Connect OBS to the event. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow and enter the server URL and stream key in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not display or share it. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions for the connection details.
- Create and label separate scenes. In OBS, make a scene for the live camera, one for prerecorded video, and one for a break card or break video if needed. Add the appropriate video, media, and audio sources to each scene. OBS scenes can contain different sources and can be changed using transitions or hotkeys; see the OBS quick start guide.
- Load and check the media. Confirm that the prerecorded file plays, its audio is audible at the intended level, and the camera and microphone behave as expected. Prepare a transition that does not expose an unintended desktop, black frame, or private window.
- Preview the complete feed before broadcast. Start OBS’s encoder connection and check the preview in Live Control Room. Switch through each scene and verify the picture and sound before the scheduled start.
- Switch during the stream. Select the prerecorded scene when it is time to play the video, and select the live-camera scene when you are ready to return. If using hotkeys, assign and test them in OBS before the event. The scene change is controlled by the encoder; YouTube does not need to be restarted for each switch.
Can OBS schedule scene changes by itself?
The documented OBS workflow supports scene switching, media sources, transitions, and hotkeys. It does not mean that scheduling a YouTube event will automatically schedule scene changes. If a change must happen at an exact time without an operator, you need a separately configured automation workflow; the sources cited here do not establish a particular scheduling plugin or its reliability.

Use YouTube’s Take a Break overlay
Take a Break is a YouTube Live Control Room away overlay, not a replacement for an encoder scene when you need precise program switching.
- In Live Control Room, open the break overlay settings and choose YouTube’s default slate or a video from your channel library.
- If selecting a channel video, make sure it is public or unlisted and allows embedding.
- Choose one of the available durations: 1, 3, or 5 minutes.
- Start the break when you are ready, then return to Live Control Room and end it when you want the regular stream to resume.
The countdown reaching zero does not end the break automatically. YouTube states: “The break does not automatically end when the countdown reaches 0.” Check YouTube’s Take a Break instructions before relying on the feature, since interface and availability can vary by account or device.

Understand scheduled mid-roll ads
Monetized creators can use automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-roll ad controls. Scheduled intervals are 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. These intervals govern opportunities for ad delivery; they do not play a creator-selected video for every viewer. Someone who does not receive an ad continues watching the stream.
YouTube recommends automatic ad placement, while manual insertion is available in Live Control Room. Choose based on the intended viewer experience and confirm the current monetization controls in YouTube’s live monetization help. YouTube reported an average “Over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour” for channels that turned on automatic live mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a platform-reported comparison, not a guarantee for an individual channel, and it concerns ad revenue—not scene switching.

Prepare the stream and protect your content
Allow time for setup
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are recommendations, not hard requirements. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live; see YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Check rights for every source
Make sure you have the rights to stream the prerecorded video, music, and break media. YouTube’s stream settings include rights-management controls, and its encoder guidance advises creators to ensure they have the necessary content rights. A video being uploaded to your channel—or eligible to be selected for an overlay—does not establish that you have permission to use it in a live stream.

Test the viewer experience
- Switch through every scene and confirm the intended picture appears.
- Check that audio changes appropriately between camera, prerecorded video, and break media.
- Confirm any selected Take a Break video is public or unlisted and allows embedding.
- Make sure an operator can return to Live Control Room and end Take a Break manually.
- Verify the event preview and encoder connection before the scheduled start.
Troubleshoot common problems
The prerecorded video does not appear
Confirm that the media source is in the scene you selected and that the intended scene is active in OBS. Check the source’s file selection and playback state, then verify the result in Live Control Room’s preview.
Viewers hear no sound or the wrong audio
Check which audio sources are active in the selected OBS scene and inspect the audio meters while the media plays. Test the change from camera to video and back before the broadcast; a scene switch can change the visible source without producing the audio mix you intended.

The YouTube stream does not receive the OBS feed
Check that OBS is connected to the correct YouTube event and that its server URL and stream key match the current encoder details in Live Control Room. If the key has been exposed, replace it rather than continuing to use a compromised credential.
The break overlay remains after its countdown
This is expected: Take a Break does not automatically end at zero. Return to Live Control Room and end the break manually.
Some viewers see an ad while others see the stream
Mid-roll ad delivery is not guaranteed for every viewer. An ad interval is not a universal intermission, so use an encoder scene or Take a Break when you need to control the program content viewers see.
