Yes—if the encoder is running on the OVHcloud VPS inside a persistent server-side session such as tmux, closing your local SSH client need not stop it. Logging out of SSH only closes your remote control connection. It does not guarantee the encoder will keep running through a crash, VPS reboot, or loss of YouTube ingest. Check the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming an active process means viewers can see it.
What happens when you disconnect from SSH?
When an encoder runs in a persistent session on the VPS, such as tmux, you can detach from that session and close SSH while the server-side process continues. A tmux session separates the remote process from the lifetime of your local terminal connection. This workflow is described in secondary tmux guidance; it is not a guarantee from OVHcloud that every process or configuration will persist.
Keep these events distinct:
- SSH disconnect: your local terminal loses its connection to the VPS. A correctly detached tmux session can leave the encoder running.
- Encoder failure: the process exits or stops encoding. tmux does not automatically restart it.
- VPS reboot or shutdown: the server stops, so a process running only in tmux stops too. A multiplexer does not make the process survive a reboot.
- YouTube ingest failure: the encoder may still be running, but YouTube may no longer be receiving a healthy broadcast.
How to run the encoder on the VPS and detach safely
- Connect to the VPS and start a remote persistent session. Create a tmux session on the VPS, not on your local computer. The exact command depends on the installed operating system and tmux setup.
- Start the encoder inside that session. Confirm that the encoder itself is running on the VPS and is configured for your media and stream profile. If it runs only on your local computer, closing that computer or its terminal can stop the stream.
- Configure YouTube ingest. In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the current server URL and stream key from Stream settings, then enter them in the encoder. YouTube says, “You can get the RTMPS URL from the Live Control Room.” Use the URL and protocol that match the selected ingest method; YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance says to check that the server URL and protocol are RTMPS when diagnosing the documented SSL or connection problems. Keep the stream key private: do not expose it in public screenshots, logs, or unprotected shared command history. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Detach from tmux before closing SSH. Detach from the tmux client so its session remains on the VPS, then disconnect from SSH. Follow the tmux controls appropriate to your installation; the cited guide describes this general workflow, but you should validate it against your Linux distribution and encoder command. iTechGuides: tmux VPS streaming guide.
- Verify both sides. Reconnect to the VPS to inspect the session or encoder process, and separately check the stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. A running tmux session or process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving the stream.
Choose the YouTube ingest method your encoder supports
Do not mix settings from different ingest protocols. First choose a protocol supported by your encoder and stream configuration; then use the matching YouTube setup instructions.

What tmux does—and what it does not do
tmux helps keep a process attached to a server-side session after the SSH client disconnects. It is useful for avoiding a stream interruption caused solely by closing a terminal, but it is not a process supervisor or a complete availability plan.

- For recovery after encoder crashes, configure and test separate process supervision and restart behavior.
- For recovery after VPS reboots, arrange and test a boot-time service or other startup mechanism; tmux alone is not sufficient.
- For YouTube connection failures, monitor the broadcast and determine how the encoder should reconnect. A running process is not proof of a healthy ingest.
- For server security, restrict access to the VPS and protect SSH credentials and stream keys. See OVHcloud Documentation: How to secure a VPS.
VPS sizing and stream settings depend on the workload
There is no established OVHcloud VPS plan-to-stream sizing recommendation for an unspecified source, codec, bitrate, and stream profile. The required CPU, memory, and network capacity depend on what the encoder must do and what it sends. Do not assume that any particular plan is sufficient based only on the fact that it can run tmux or accept an SSH connection.
Likewise, a universal FFmpeg command or bitrate cannot be prescribed without the media, encoder configuration, VPS environment, and selected YouTube ingest settings. Use the matching protocol guidance and validate the actual stream in Live Control Room before relying on it unattended.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or goes offline
