For combining several elements in one overlay, StreamElements documents an Overlay Editor and a single-browser-source workflow; for a customizable YouTube chat box, Streamlabs documents styling and OBS setup. These are feature-based options, not a tested ranking.
Choose widgets by what your stream needs
A widget is an on-screen element added to a broadcast scene. Start with the job it should do, then decide whether it belongs on screen throughout the stream or only when something happens.
- Alerts: Notify viewers about supported events such as a subscription or donation. OBS describes alerts as a way to thank viewers for following, donating, and subscribing. OBS Project’s alerts guide explains the general setup.
- Chat box: Put live YouTube messages on the stream canvas. This can help viewers follow the conversation, but consider whether messages will obscure the video or other important information.
- Labels and event lists: Show a single piece of information, such as the latest follower, or a short history of recent events.
- Goals: Show progress toward a target when that progress is relevant to the stream and its audience.
- Custom widgets: Use custom behavior or design when built-in elements are not enough. StreamElements documents custom widgets made with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with access to stream events and an API.
A gaming stream, talk show, and music broadcast do not necessarily need the same overlay. Use the smallest set that supports the format; more elements can make the main content harder to see.
Which widget service fits?
StreamElements and Streamlabs both document browser-source workflows, but their published setup material highlights different strengths. Choose based on the elements you need and the way you want to organize them, not an assumed performance advantage.

| StreamElements | Compose alerts, labels, goals, and chat in its Overlay Editor; build custom widgets if the built-in options are insufficient. | Render an overlay through one browser source. See StreamElements overlay documentation. | Its chatbot instructions say the stream must be public and live for the bot to join. The support article, updated in August 2024, describes some YouTube loyalty-system features as unavailable; check current account behavior before depending on those features. It also advises selecting Live chat rather than Top chat for bot messages. See StreamElements’ YouTube chatbot instructions. |
| Streamlabs | Its Chat Box supports YouTube and offers settings for appearance, message timing, filtering, and optional sound notifications. | Add the widget to OBS or other broadcast software using a browser source and widget URL. See the Chat Box setup guide and widget URL instructions. | The Chat Box documentation explicitly describes displaying YouTube chat. |
| OBS Browser source with a provider’s alert | A way to add a provider-created alert to an OBS scene. | Get the provider’s overlay or widget URL, add a Browser source, paste the URL, and set dimensions. OBS lists Streamlabs and StreamElements as examples and says an OBS plugin is not required for alerts. See OBS’s alert tutorial. | YouTube capability and requirements depend on the provider and widget. Confirm support in that provider’s documentation. |
YouTube lists StreamElements and Streamlabs among third-party live-stream tools, while clarifying that those products are not made or endorsed by Google. YouTube’s Live Chat API also supports external applications that read, send, and moderate messages in real time, including tools for on-screen comments and interactive experiences. See YouTube’s live-streaming tools information.
Add a widget to an OBS scene
- Configure the element with its provider. Create the alert, chat box, or overlay and locate its browser-source or widget URL using the provider’s current instructions.
- Open the scene in OBS. In the Sources panel, select + and add a Browser source. Name it so you can identify the widget later.
- Enter the widget URL and dimensions. Paste the provider’s URL into the source properties and set a width and height suitable for the element and your canvas. Follow the provider’s instructions for any other settings.
- Position and preview it in context. Check the widget against the actual scene, including the video and other overlays. Confirm that messages, names, and alerts are legible and do not cover important content.
- Test the behavior before going live. Use the provider’s preview or test function if available, and verify any timing, filtering, or sound settings you plan to use.
For a Streamlabs Chat Box, its guide recommends reusing one existing source across scenes to avoid duplicated notification sounds. It also recommends leaving Shutdown source when not visible unchecked if timed settings or chat continuity across scene changes matter. Apply that advice to the documented Chat Box workflow rather than assuming it applies to every browser widget.

Check YouTube chat and bot requirements
Showing chat on screen and running a chatbot are separate needs. A provider may support displaying messages while imposing different prerequisites or feature limits on its bot.
- For StreamElements’ YouTube chatbot, the cited instructions require a public, live stream before the bot can join.
- The same StreamElements article says to use Live chat rather than Top chat so bot messages are visible, and notes that some YouTube loyalty features are not available. Because the article was updated in August 2024, verify the current status before building a stream around those features.
- For Streamlabs’ Chat Box, use its documented platform and appearance controls to select and style YouTube chat. Consult its current setup guide for the settings available to your account.
Keep the overlay useful and readable
- Prioritize the video or presentation; move or remove widgets that conceal key content.
- Use a chat box only if visible messages help the format. Consider how message timing and filtering affect readability.
- Keep alerts noticeable without letting them dominate the scene.
- Preview the full scene at its intended canvas dimensions. A widget that looks fine in isolation may overlap another source in the broadcast layout.
- Remove elements that do not help viewers understand or participate in the stream.
What the documentation does—and does not—establish
The cited product pages describe features and setup steps. They do not establish which service has better visual quality, reliability, latency, or resource usage, and there is no controlled comparison here. Treat the table as a guide to documented capabilities, then check the result in your own scene.
