There is no single proven fix for a black screen in an OBS stream hosted on an OVHcloud VPS. First find where the picture disappears: check the OBS preview, a local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and then the public watch page. That split tells you whether to investigate the scene or graphics inside the VPS, OBS rendering and encoding, or the connection to YouTube.
Find where the picture disappears
Run a short test and compare the same stream at each point in the path. A black preview in OBS suggests a source, scene, display-session, or rendering problem. If OBS preview and local recording look right but YouTube does not, focus on encoder output, the stream setup, and the outbound connection.
- Check the OBS preview. Confirm the intended source is visible in the active scene and that the source is not hidden or showing the wrong display, window, or game.
- Make a local recording. Record a short sample and inspect the saved file. This separates what OBS is composing from what YouTube receives.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Check its preview, stream-health messages, and any encoder errors.
- Compare the public watch page. If it differs from the Control Room preview, note the difference; do not assume the two views diagnose the same stage.
YouTube recommends checking source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, a local archive, and outbound connectivity when diagnosing live-stream problems. Its troubleshooting guidance distinguishes poor encoder/source output from a healthy encoder whose outbound connection may be at fault: YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
If OBS preview or the local recording is black
Verify the source and the VPS session
Identify the exact OBS source type—display capture, window capture, game capture, browser, media source, or capture device—and confirm that the target actually exists inside the VPS’s active desktop session. A window or display on your own computer is not automatically available to OBS running in a remote guest session. Check that the source is enabled and visible in the scene, then inspect OBS logs and the graphics devices visible to the guest.

Check OS, graphics support, and capture method
OBS lists a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU for Windows and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU for Linux/Unix. These are baseline compatibility requirements, not a guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully. The available details do not identify your OVHcloud offer, guest OS, display session, or exposed GPU, so establish those before changing drivers or capture settings. See OBS Studio system requirements.
For Windows display capture, OBS documents its newer capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later. If display capture fails in a supported setup, the OBS guide suggests manually selecting the Windows 10 capture method. The guide also discusses historical multi-GPU issues and laptop GPU preferences, but a virtual server may not expose multiple physical GPUs or behave like a laptop. First determine which adapters the guest sees and what display surface the source is meant to capture. See OBS capture compatibility guidance.

If the preview is visible but the local recording or stream output is black, compare the output path and inspect the OBS log. The cited guidance does not establish one specific cause for that symptom on an OVHcloud VPS; avoid installing a plug-in, switching GPUs, or prescribing a driver change without confirming the OS, source type, OBS version, and log evidence.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload
OBS needs GPU time to compose and render a scene. Complex scenes or other GPU-intensive work can leave it short of resources. Check OBS statistics and logs, along with CPU and GPU utilization in the guest. If they show overload, reduce scene complexity or output workload, then repeat the local recording test. These steps address demonstrated performance pressure; overload should not be assumed to explain every black screen. See OBS performance and overload guidance.

If OBS and local output look right but YouTube is black
Inspect stream health and the outbound path
Review YouTube Live Control Room’s preview, stream-health messages, encoder errors, and CPU load. Compare them with the local recording. If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube is not receiving it properly, test the VPS’s outbound connection and upload capacity. If the encoder cannot start, verify the selected stream key and that the encoder is sending to the intended live event. Use YouTube’s troubleshooting steps rather than changing capture settings that already produce a good local file: YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
Match encoder settings to the video profile
For standard RTMP/RTMPS streaming, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; recommends CBR bitrate mode and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds; and lists AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec and resolution, so choose a value for the actual profile rather than treating one bitrate as a universal black-screen fix. For example, YouTube’s guidance lists H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are settings for those matching profiles, not guarantees of a cure. See YouTube encoder settings and bitrates.

The cited OVHcloud GPU documentation concerns Public Cloud GPU instances; it does not establish that an existing OVHcloud VPS plan includes GPU passthrough. OVHcloud says PCI passthrough lets the guest operating system control the GPU. A GPU instance may be worth evaluating only if diagnosis shows the current guest lacks graphics capability needed for the chosen capture or encoding setup. It will not by itself correct a wrong source, a missing desktop surface, or a YouTube ingest problem.

Common symptoms and the next check
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| OBS preview is black | Active scene, source visibility and type, whether the target exists in the VPS session, guest graphics devices, and OBS logs. |
| OBS preview is visible but the local recording is black | OBS output path and logs; confirm the source and recording settings before making system changes. |
| Local recording is good but YouTube preview is black | Live Control Room stream health, encoder errors, stream key/event selection, and outbound connection. |
| OBS reports overload or dropped/rendering frames | OBS statistics and guest CPU/GPU use; reduce workload only if performance evidence supports it. |
| Changing capture method or GPU settings is being considered | Confirm Windows version, OBS version, visible guest adapters, and source type first; laptop-specific advice may not apply to a VPS. |
What to collect if the black screen persists
These details make a follow-up diagnosis specific instead of guesswork:
- Guest operating system and version, exact OVHcloud offer and region, and whether a GPU appears inside the guest.
- OBS version and the source type being captured.
- Whether the OBS preview, local recording, Live Control Room preview, and public playback are each black or visible.
- OBS log and statistics evidence, including any encoder or rendering overload messages.
- YouTube stream-health messages and whether the local recording has normal picture and sound.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube around the clock rather than troubleshoot an OBS capture session, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo plans, then start your free day.
