Screenshotlayer can generate a website thumbnail from a URL: send a request with your API access key, the fully qualified target URL, and a width value. Connect that request to a script or publishing workflow, then store the returned image and handle refreshes and errors deliberately. The available documentation does not establish a ready-made WordPress plugin or a tested CMS integration.
How the Screenshotlayer thumbnail workflow works
- Create an account and get an API access key. Screenshotlayer’s API documentation says requests require an
access_keyand a targeturlthat includes its protocol, such ashttps://. - Request the capture. Include the target URL and set
widthto the thumbnail width your site needs. The API documentation lists a default viewport of 1440 × 900 and PNG as the default output format; the vendor FAQ confirms thatwidthcan generate a thumbnail at a custom pixel width. - Connect the request to your publishing workflow. A server-side script can request the image when an editor adds a URL, save the returned image, and place it in the post or content directory. The evidence available does not confirm a ready-made WordPress connector, so treat this as an API integration rather than a plugin installation.
- Choose how to retain and update the image. Screenshotlayer documents image URLs and optional export to S3 or FTP. Decide whether to keep a capture until you deliberately refresh it or regenerate it as the source page changes.
- Protect credentials and handle failures. Keep the access key on your server, not in public page markup or browser-side JavaScript. Add error handling and quota monitoring to the automation.
Request options that affect a thumbnail
| Option | What it does | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
width |
Requests a thumbnail at a chosen pixel width. | Match the display width of your card or directory image. |
viewport |
Sets the page-rendering dimensions; the documented default is 1440 × 900. | Use a viewport that produces a useful composition before the image is resized to thumbnail width. |
| Format | PNG is the documented default; the API offers format selection. | Choose an output format supported by your publishing workflow. |
delay |
Waits before capture. | Try it when a page needs extra time to render. Its effectiveness depends on the target page and has not been independently tested here. |
css_url, user_agent, accept_lang |
Customize capture behavior. | Use only when you need to adjust styling or request context; results can vary by target site. |
Cache TTL and force |
The API specification lists a default cache TTL of 2,592,000 seconds (30 days) and a force option for requesting a fresh capture. The FAQ says a custom TTL can be set below the default. |
Set a refresh policy that fits how often source pages change; force a fresh capture when needed. |
Connect the API to a blog safely
The exact capture endpoint and request syntax should be taken from the current Screenshotlayer API documentation associated with your account. Those endpoint details are not established here, so the following Python scaffold deliberately reads the endpoint from a server environment variable rather than guessing it. Set SCREENSHOTLAYER_ENDPOINT to the endpoint shown in the current official documentation and SCREENSHOTLAYER_ACCESS_KEY to your private key.
import os
import requests
endpoint = os.environ["SCREENSHOTLAYER_ENDPOINT"]
access_key = os.environ["SCREENSHOTLAYER_ACCESS_KEY"]
params = {
"access_key": access_key,
"url": "https://example.com",
"width": 640,
}
response = requests.get(endpoint, params=params, timeout=90)
response.raise_for_status()
with open("thumbnail.png", "wb") as image_file:
image_file.write(response.content)
Replace the example target URL and width with your own values. Confirm the response format and error behavior in the current API documentation before relying on this minimal example in production. Do not expose the access key in frontend code, logs, or a publicly served configuration file.
Automate generation and refreshes
- Trigger capture when a post or directory entry is created, rather than making every visitor wait for an API request.
- Store the resulting image under a stable identifier for the post or source URL, and retain enough metadata to know when it was captured.
- Choose whether a changed source URL, an editor action, or a scheduled job should trigger a refresh. The documented default cache TTL is 30 days; a custom lower TTL and forced refresh are available.
- Record request failures and quota exhaustion so a publishing job can retry or leave the existing thumbnail in place instead of silently publishing a broken image.
Costs and account considerations for Indian bloggers
Screenshotlayer’s pricing page checked in 2026 listed these USD plan prices and request limits. They are vendor plan details, not India-specific billing or tax guidance; prices, allowances, overages, and plan terms can change.
#1 Best Overall
| Plan | Listed allowance | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 100 snapshots per month | Free |
| Basic | 10,000 requests | USD 19.99 per month |
| Professional | 30,000 requests | USD 59.99 per month |
| Enterprise | 75,000 requests | USD 149.99 per month |
The vendor FAQ describes the Free tier as non-commercial and paid plans as having commercial-use options. It also says overage fees may apply after a plan limit and describes usage notifications at 75%, 90%, and 100% of the monthly allowance. Verify the live plan and contract terms before launching a public or monetized thumbnail feature.
The FAQ lists Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and Diners Club, but does not establish acceptance of Indian-issued cards, INR billing, tax treatment, or country-specific availability. Confirm those points with Screenshotlayer before depending on the service for an India-based business.

Screenshotlayer’s FAQ claims uptime of around 99.9% but says it does not provide public uptime statistics. That is a vendor claim, not independently verified availability data. Its FAQ also explains that one dedicated worker processes one screenshot at a time, while ten workers enable ten concurrent captures; this is a vendor explanation, not a performance benchmark.
Terms and image reuse
Before making captured images public or redistributing them, review Screenshotlayer’s current terms. The terms restrict transferring, redistributing, or exploiting API data and services beyond the licensed scope, and assign responsibility for credential security and detecting and handling returned errors to the account holder. Optional S3 or FTP export is documented, but neither is required for every blog workflow.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The request is rejected: Check that the target URL is fully qualified and includes
http://orhttps://, and that the account access key is present and valid. - The capture is too large or composed differently than expected: Set the desired thumbnail
widthand review the viewport dimensions used to render the page. The documented default viewport is 1440 × 900. - The page appears before it finishes rendering: Try the documented
delayoption. Do not assume one delay will work for every site; rendering behavior varies by target. - A thumbnail does not reflect recent changes: Review the cache TTL. The documented default is 30 days; use a lower custom TTL or the
forceoption when a fresh capture is necessary. - Automation stops after reaching an allowance: Check the account’s usage and current plan terms. Overage fees may apply, and the FAQ describes notifications at 75%, 90%, and 100% of the monthly allowance.
- A public post exposes the API key: Move the request to a server-side job, remove the key from client code and public markup, and rotate the credential if it has been exposed.

ScreenshotNeo is an alternative website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return an image or PDF from one GET request; cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. AI agents can use its MCP server. It includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For a direct API request, use your ScreenshotNeo API key in place of YOUR_API_KEY and change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
