But do not use this workflow to scrape Google Search for rank checking without express permission: Google identifies that automated access as prohibited machine-generated traffic under its Search spam policies and Terms of Service. Rotating the run times does not change whether access is permitted. Use a data source authorized for your intended purpose, or obtain permission before capturing Google results.
What Playwright can—and cannot—do
Playwright’s Page API can navigate to a page and save its rendered state as an image. The API describes screenshot capture and its options; it does not grant permission to access a site or automate searches. The example below is for a URL you are authorized to access, not a way around Google’s restrictions.
Install Playwright in a Node.js project and install the browser it will launch:

npx playwright install chromiumSave this as capture.mjs. It accepts an authorized URL, creates a timestamped PNG filename, logs the scheduled and actual run times, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.

}The script waits for the document to be parsed, not for every image, ad, or client-side widget to finish loading. Adjust the readiness condition for the authorized site and the capture you need. Playwright documents screenshot options in its Page API.
Make the capture repeat on a schedule
The recurring part is independent of Playwright: configure an operating-system scheduler or hosted runner to invoke the same command at the cadence you need. No particular scheduler or hosting provider is required, and exact setup differs by environment.

- Choose an execution environment that can run Node.js and the installed Playwright browser.
- Set
CAPTURE_URLto the permitted target and, if useful,OUTPUT_DIRto persistent storage. Restrict access to any stored captures that should not be public. - Configure the environment’s scheduler to run
node /path/to/capture.mjsat the desired times. Use ordinary fixed scheduling; do not treat rotating times as a means of avoiding access controls. - Make the run observable. Retain the script’s structured log output, exit status, scheduled time, actual start time, and output path; alert on nonzero exit status or a missing expected image.
- Set retry behavior deliberately. A transient network or host failure may justify a limited retry, but repeated requests must still be permitted by the target’s rules.
For comparisons across captures, keep the browser version, viewport, locale, timezone, and other rendering conditions consistent. Decide how long to retain images and who can access them. A local machine is convenient if it is reliably available; a hosted runner can execute while your computer is off, but its schedule, storage persistence, retry behavior, and failure notifications depend on that provider.
Keep Google Search screenshots within its rules
Google Search Central specifically includes scraping results for rank-checking or other automated access to Google Search conducted without express permission in its description of machine-generated traffic. The policy says that traffic violates Google’s spam policies and Terms of Service. The fact that a script runs only occasionally—or at varying times—does not establish permission. For rank monitoring, choose a source expressly permitted for that use or get express permission rather than automating Google Search directly.

If you are authorized to publish a Search screenshot, Google’s Search screenshot guidelines call for showing Search realistically and without interface changes, avoiding any implication that Google endorses the material, and including the requested trademark attribution. Consider approvals for third-party content shown in the image as well. Google’s guidance says permission is not needed for screenshots in print for educational or instructional purposes; that statement does not remove separate third-party rights or other applicable restrictions. Advertising uses require Google’s approval.
Wait for the right page state
domcontentloaded is a useful starting point, but it may capture a page before the specific content you need appears. On a permitted target, wait for a meaningful selector or another documented page state rather than adding an arbitrary delay without checking the result. If you need full-page output, fullPage: true asks Playwright to capture the full scrollable page; a viewport-only screenshot is better when the comparison requires a fixed visible area.

Playwright also offers toHaveScreenshot(), which waits until consecutive screenshots are stable before comparing one with an expected image. That assertion belongs to Playwright Test; it is not necessary for a simple archival capture script. See the PageAssertions documentation.
Troubleshoot failed or inconsistent captures
- Browser executable missing: run
npx playwright install chromiumin the project environment and ensure the scheduler uses the same project and dependency installation. - Timeout during navigation: check network access, the target URL, and whether the page is slow. Increase the timeout only when the target is authorized and the longer wait is appropriate; do not add retries to evade blocking.
- HTTP error or no response: the script records non-success HTTP status as a failure. Inspect the status and target availability; a screenshot file from an error page should not be mistaken for a successful capture.
- Image appears incomplete: the document may have loaded before images or client-rendered content. Wait for a target-specific selector or use an appropriate readiness strategy for that site.
- Script works manually but not on schedule: confirm the scheduled job’s working directory, Node.js path, environment variables, permissions, browser installation, and write access to the output directory.
- Output gets overwritten: preserve the timestamped filename scheme and verify that the scheduler’s host uses persistent storage if captures must survive between runs.
- Captures differ unexpectedly: standardize viewport and rendering environment, and account for genuinely changing content such as timestamps, personalization, or rotating page elements.
