Start with a scoped URL inventory, capture pages under fixed conditions, and save every result—including redirects and failures—in a searchable manifest.
Decide what the archive should answer
Choose a concrete SEO question before collecting pages. A focused archive is easier to validate than a site-wide dump and makes comparisons more meaningful.
Set the scope
- List the competitors you want to monitor and give each a stable ID.
- Choose page classes relevant to the question, such as product, category, pricing, or editorial pages.
- Record the market, language, and location when they may affect what a visitor sees.
- Define separate device profiles, such as desktop and mobile. Do not mix them into one comparison series.
Begin with a manageable set so you can inspect failures and refine URL rules before scaling up.
Build and maintain the URL inventory
Use each competitor’s publicly available XML sitemap and relevant internal links as discovery sources. Google describes sitemaps, URL structure, crawling, and page metadata in its crawling and indexing guidance. These sources help you discover pages; they do not guarantee a complete list of pages a competitor has published.

Keep discovered URLs auditable
For every discovered address, retain the exact original URL and also create a normalized key for grouping and deduplication. Normalize only according to rules you have chosen—for example, whether to treat scheme, host, trailing slash, or tracking parameters as equivalent. Record the rules and avoid discarding the original: alternate forms and redirects may matter when you inspect what was actually requested and where it ended up.
Do not treat a competitor’s canonical URL or Google’s canonicalization guidance as an instruction to your archive system. Preserve the page’s published canonical value as metadata when available, but make your own inventory and comparison decisions explicitly.
Choose a capture method and fix the conditions
For a custom workflow, use browser automation such as Playwright to navigate to each URL and save a screenshot. Its API supports viewport and full-page screenshots, with options including output format and scale; see the screenshot guide and Page screenshot API.

Make comparisons repeatable
- Keep browser engine and version consistent within a comparison series.
- Fix viewport width and height, device scale, and capture mode (viewport or full page).
- Choose a predictable wait condition and record it. A page-load event alone may not mean that all asynchronously rendered content is visible.
- Record when the capture occurred in UTC.
- For pages with consent dialogs, personalization, animation, or asynchronous content, record the state you observed. Do not silently mask or remove elements that could be part of the competitor’s experience.
Use a separate capture series for mobile or a different market, rather than comparing unlike states. Full-page captures help inspect long documents; viewport captures preserve a controlled first-screen view. Keep the original screenshot as evidence and save any annotations or visual diffs separately.

Example Playwright capture
This minimal Node.js example captures one requested URL as a full-page PNG. Install Playwright and its browser first, then run it with a URL argument:

This is a starting point, not a complete archive runner: production code should write one durable manifest record per attempt, handle errors, and use collision-resistant paths. Network-idle waits can be unsuitable for pages with persistent network activity; choose another consistent wait strategy when necessary and record it.

Store each attempt in a searchable manifest
Index screenshots in a CSV, SQLite table, or JSONL file. The manifest—not a filename convention alone—should be the authoritative record. The following fields are useful recommendations, not a schema mandated by Google or Playwright:

Write a record for failed attempts too. If a page did not load or metadata could not be read, leave those values empty and record the error rather than inventing values or silently dropping the URL. Keep separate records for each date and device profile. A path containing a stable competitor/page key and UTC timestamp can make files easier to browse, but it does not replace the manifest.

Review archive quality before drawing comparisons
- Confirm that each manifest screenshot path points to an existing file.
- Check that redirects have a recorded final URL and that failures remain visible as outcomes.
- Verify that title, description, or other metadata is populated only when it was actually available.
- Compare pages captured with matching viewport, browser, scale, wait condition, and capture mode.
- Keep original captures unchanged; store diffs, annotations, and analyst notes as separate files.
When comparing captures, describe observable changes—such as copy, layout, page elements, or calls to action. Verify important details against the live URL and the manifest. An image alone cannot establish a competitor’s intent, experiment results, rankings, or traffic impact.

Use the Wayback Machine as supplementary evidence
The Internet Archive can help locate older captures, but an absent or incomplete capture is not evidence that a page did not exist. Pages may be missing because of discovery gaps, access restrictions, robots.txt, owner exclusion, technical limits, or reliance on JavaScript. Its Wayback Machine help page also explains that Save Page Now saves one specific page once; it does not archive an entire site, save multiple pages, or schedule future captures.
For programmatic investigation, the Internet Archive documents an Availability API for checking whether an accessible archived capture exists and a CDX server API for more complex capture queries. Check current API behavior and usage constraints before making either a production dependency.
