Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo launch a 4K/60 YouTube stream when you sign in to Windows, configure OBS for 3840×2160 at 60 fps, set an encoder and bitrate suitable for YouTube, then put an OBS shortcut in the Windows Startup folder with --startstreaming added to its target. In YouTube Studio, enable auto-start for the stream if you want the encoder to start the broadcast. Starting OBS and starting the live broadcast are separate behaviors, so test both before relying on unattended operation.
Before you configure OBS startup
Confirm that YouTube Live is enabled for your channel and that you have selected or created the intended stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS; YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password and destination information. Keep it private, and reset it in Studio if it is exposed. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream and its stream-key instructions.
Decide whether Windows sign-in should merely open OBS or also begin broadcasting. The Startup-folder shortcut starts the app. OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter asks OBS to start streaming, while YouTube’s stream auto-start setting controls whether an incoming encoder feed initiates the broadcast.
Set OBS for YouTube Live at 4K 60fps
Set the video resolution and frame rate
- Open OBS and select Settings > Video.
- Set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and Common FPS Values to 60.
- Check that your canvas, sources, and scene are composed for the intended 4K picture. A 4K output setting does not turn lower-resolution source material into native 4K detail.
OBS distinguishes output resolution from the canvas and notes that 60-fps streaming can place substantial load on a system. Use OBS’s overview and quick-start guide to confirm the relevant settings, then test your actual scene.

Choose an encoder and bitrate
In Settings > Output, select an encoder supported by your PC and OBS installation. Use YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations for 2160p at 60 fps:
| Codec | YouTube-listed minimum ingest bitrate | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended and minimum ingest settings, not a guarantee that your internet connection or computer can sustain a stream. The figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; the page does not state a publication year. Your available codec choices depend on your encoder hardware, drivers, and OBS version. If your upload cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate with headroom, lower the stream settings rather than assuming a brief successful test is enough.
OBS recommends hardware encoding when available because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component. OBS documents NVENC on Windows and AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync on compatible hardware; older encoder generations may deliver lower image quality at a given bitrate. The OBS hardware encoding guide explains the options. There is no universal GPU model or hardware specification that guarantees 4K/60: the result depends on the encoder generation, scene complexity, frame rate, resolution, and connection. The OBS system requirements are a baseline, not proof that a PC can handle this workload. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test.

Match YouTube’s transport and advanced settings
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS; use a compatible RTMP/RTMPS destination configured with the stream URL and key.
- Rate control: Use CBR.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Scan and pixels: Use progressive scan and square pixels.
- Color and B-frames: For SDR, YouTube’s general advanced guidance specifies Rec. 709, 8-bit, and two B-frames.
- Audio: Use AAC. YouTube lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio.
These recommendations are codec- and mode-dependent; match them to the controls available in OBS and the encoder you selected. YouTube also notes that its low-latency optimization option is unavailable for 4K streams, which use normal latency. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings and advanced encoder settings guidance.

Make OBS start streaming when you sign in to Windows
Add OBS to the Startup folder
- Find the OBS shortcut. If you do not have one, create a shortcut to
obs64.exe, typically in the OBS installation folder. - Press Windows key + R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter. This opens the current user’s Startup folder. To launch the shortcut for every user on the PC, useshell:common startupinstead. - Copy or move the OBS shortcut into the folder that matches your needs.
- Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, to verify that OBS opens.
Windows 10 and 11 also let you check Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps. If OBS is not listed there, Microsoft documents the Startup-folder method in its Windows startup-app instructions.
Add OBS’s streaming launch parameter
- Right-click the OBS shortcut and open Properties.
- In Target, leave the quoted path to
obs64.exeintact and add a space followed by--startstreamingafter the closing quotation mark. For example:"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Your installation path may differ. - Set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe. This is especially important for scheduled or otherwise automated launching. - Apply the change, then test the shortcut manually before putting the PC into unattended use.
OBS documents the launch option and working-directory requirement in its launch parameters guide. Check that the intended OBS profile, scene collection, scene, and stream key are selected. A launch parameter cannot compensate for a missing key, unavailable network, or an incorrect stream destination.

Use Task Scheduler if you need a logon task
If you need a logon trigger or additional task conditions, use Windows Task Scheduler instead of the Startup folder. Create a task with a logon trigger and an action that starts the OBS executable; supply --startstreaming as the argument and set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Configure it to run in the signed-in user’s interactive session so the OBS interface and desktop scene sources are available. Microsoft’s Task Scheduler documentation describes logon triggers and executable actions; do not assume a GUI streaming application will work normally in a non-interactive session.
Set YouTube’s broadcast behavior and test the whole path
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the selected stream’s auto-start setting. If auto-start is enabled, an encoder feed can initiate the broadcast; if it is disabled, OBS can connect without making the stream public until you start it in Studio. The exact controls can depend on the stream setup, so verify the behavior for your selected stream in YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

- Test the OBS shortcut while signed in, then test a real Windows sign-in. Confirm OBS opens with the correct profile and scene.
- Send a representative test feed with movement and audio similar to the intended stream. Check that YouTube receives 2160p60, audio is present, and stream health shows no unresolved warnings.
- Confirm the bitrate remains stable and that the broadcast starts only when you intend it to. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
- Supervise the first unattended run. A successful app launch does not prove that the connection, video, audio, or broadcast behavior will remain healthy.
For ongoing streams, use content you have the rights to broadcast and follow YouTube’s live-streaming policies. Repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded material does not remove copyright obligations or guarantee that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements for original content. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and copyright guidance.

Common startup and stream problems
- OBS opens but does not stream: Check that
--startstreamingfollows the closing quote in the shortcut Target, the correct profile and stream key are selected, and the PC has network access at sign-in. - OBS connects, but the YouTube broadcast does not begin: Check the selected stream’s auto-start behavior in YouTube Studio, or start the broadcast there if auto-start is off.
- YouTube reports dropped frames or unstable health: The upload connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. Test under representative conditions, leave upload headroom, and reduce the bitrate or output settings if stability does not improve.
- Video stutters or OBS struggles at 4K/60: The encoder, GPU generation, CPU load, or scene may be the limit. Try an available hardware encoder, simplify the scene, or reduce resolution or frame rate; then retest.
- The shortcut fails or starts in the wrong context: Recheck the executable path, quotation marks, launch argument, and Start in directory. For Task Scheduler, use the signed-in user’s interactive session.
- OBS appears but sources are missing: Check the selected scene collection and profile, and ensure the sources are available in that Windows session. Desktop capture and other session-dependent sources may behave differently when nobody is signed in.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before the next connection.
