Not reliably if the Raspberry Pi 5 has to encode the video live. Raspberry Pi’s published H.264 software-encoding result is real-time 1080p30, and its 4K60 display and HEVC-decoding capabilities are not 4K60 encoding capabilities. A Pi 5 might relay a compatible, already-encoded file without re-encoding, but that exact workflow is not established as reliable; test it end to end before depending on it. If dependable 4K60 is essential, use an encoder with verified 4K60 support.

Why 4K60 display support does not mean 4K60 streaming

The Raspberry Pi 5 can drive two 4Kp60 displays and hardware-decode 4Kp60 HEVC. Those are output and playback capabilities, not proof that it can encode a live 4K60 stream. Raspberry Pi’s BCM2712 documentation distinguishes display support from HEVC decoding, and its Pi 5 launch article describes a “4Kp60 HEVC decoder” rather than a video encoder (Raspberry Pi BCM2712 documentation; Raspberry Pi 5 launch article).

For Pi 5 camera streaming, Raspberry Pi’s documentation uses the software encoder x264enc; it says to replace the v4l2h264enc element used on Pi 4 and earlier. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding performance white paper reports real-time software encoding at 1080p30. That vendor-published result supports 1080p30 under its tested conditions; it does not establish a 4K60 ceiling for every possible workload, but it also offers no basis for relying on real-time 4K60 encoding (Raspberry Pi camera streaming documentation; Raspberry Pi H.264 encoding performance white paper).

Two different ways to send a video loop

Encode a live source on the Pi

If the Pi must decode, process, and encode frames into a live 4K60 output, it needs to encode every frame in real time. The available Pi 5 evidence does not support this as a dependable setup. Lowering the output to 1080p30 is a more credible fallback because it matches the resolution and frame rate in Raspberry Pi’s published real-time H.264 result, though you should still test your own settings and complete stream.

Relay an already-encoded file

A pre-encoded loop could avoid the main video-encoding workload if the streaming pipeline copies the video stream rather than decoding and re-encoding it. That does not automatically make the workflow viable: the file and container, timestamps, audio, and RTMP or RTMPS muxing must all work together. The cited Raspberry Pi material does not verify this exact Pi 5-to-YouTube workflow or its long-run stability, so treat it as an experiment, not a proven 4K60 solution.

Use another encoder for a firm 4K60 requirement

A separate hardware or software encoder is the safer route when 4K60 is non-negotiable. Confirm that it can encode the chosen codec at 4K60, produce YouTube-compatible settings, support encrypted RTMPS transport if needed, and sustain the upload rate from your actual connection. A Pi 5 can still serve other roles, but its Gigabit Ethernet port alone cannot guarantee your internet upload capacity or a stable route to YouTube.

YouTube’s current 4K60 ingest settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. For 2160p60, the page lists recommended video bitrates of 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for HEVC or AV1. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not evidence that a Pi 5 can encode or sustain those settings. In practice, allow upload headroom beyond the video target for audio and network variation (YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Test a relay before relying on it

  1. Confirm what the pipeline does. Check that it stream-copies the video rather than decoding and re-encoding it. If it re-encodes, the Pi is again responsible for real-time encoding.
  2. Check the file and audio. Verify that the video codec and container can be muxed into the selected RTMP or RTMPS output, and that audio and timestamps remain synchronized.
  3. Match the YouTube ingest settings. Configure CBR where applicable and set a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a supported codec and bitrate for the selected resolution and frame rate.
  4. Measure the internet connection. Confirm sustained upload capacity with practical headroom above the video bitrate; a Gigabit Ethernet interface describes the local link, not the performance of your broadband connection or route to YouTube.
  5. Run a sustained, end-to-end trial. Check YouTube’s incoming stream status and the actual picture and sound over an extended run. Look for dropped frames, buffering, timestamp or audio drift, and disconnections before making the loop a production stream.

Common failure points

  • CPU saturation or dropped frames: the pipeline is encoding rather than copying the video, or the encoding workload exceeds what the Pi can sustain. Verify the pipeline; reduce the output to a tested lower setting or move encoding to another device.
  • Unstable ingest or buffering: upload capacity may be insufficient or variable, even over Gigabit Ethernet. Check sustained upload performance and leave headroom above the video bitrate.
  • YouTube rejects or struggles with the signal: check codec, CBR configuration, bitrate, keyframe interval, and RTMP/RTMPS settings against YouTube’s current guidance.
  • Audio drift, missing audio, or playback glitches: inspect container support, timestamps, audio handling, and muxing in the relay pipeline. A compatible video stream alone does not guarantee a valid combined stream.
  • The test works briefly but fails later: a short preview does not establish long-run reliability. Test the complete loop for the duration you expect to run it and monitor the YouTube ingest status.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than using the Pi specifically, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
