To check whether your YouTube Live stream is set up for 4K at 60 fps, confirm the encoder is sending 3840×2160 progressive video at 60 fps, then use Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages as additional checks. YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default, but its published help material does not document a single Live Control Room control that independently certifies the exact incoming resolution and frame rate.

What you can verify in Live Control Room

For this purpose, YouTube’s “4K” live setting means 2160p: 3840×2160 pixels. The target is 2160p at 60 frames per second (fps). YouTube says creators streaming through Live Control Room should specify resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder; YouTube then automatically detects those settings and transcodes the live feed into multiple viewer formats. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes that workflow.

Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages help you assess whether the stream is arriving and identify transmission problems. A healthy status is not, by itself, proof that YouTube is receiving exactly 2160p60. Nor does a manually selected resolution on a custom stream key prove that the encoder is actually sending that resolution. Treat the encoder’s output settings, YouTube’s detection, the preview, and health messages as complementary checks.

Verify 2160p60 before the event

  1. Set and inspect the encoder output. In the encoder, set the output resolution to 3840×2160 progressive (2160p) and the frame rate to 60 fps. Check the encoder’s actual output settings, not just the camera’s capture mode or the project canvas. Those can differ from the signal being sent to YouTube.
  2. Check the stream key’s resolution behavior. YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. If using a custom stream key, you can enable manual settings under Stream Resolution and select the expected resolution. That selection describes the expected input; it does not change or verify the encoder’s outgoing signal.
  3. Run a representative test stream. Before the event, send a test with movement and audio similar to what you plan to broadcast. Open the stream in Live Control Room, inspect the preview, and read any stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health and messages. See encoder settings guidance and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
  4. Cross-check during the event. Keep an eye on stream health and on the audio and video in the preview. If exact received 2160p60 is mission-critical, also inspect playback as a viewer after YouTube makes the relevant rendition available. Viewer playback quality can vary with the device, network, and selected rendition, so it is a separate check—not a direct readout of the incoming encoder signal.

Choose the encoder settings for 4K60

YouTube’s published encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; support frame rates up to 60 fps; recommend constant bitrate (CBR); and recommend a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Set these in the encoder. YouTube lists normal latency for 4K/2160 streams; low-latency optimization is unavailable at that resolution. Its live settings can change, so consult the current YouTube encoder settings table when configuring a production stream.

2160p output Codec YouTube’s listed bitrate guidance
60 fps H.264 35 Mbps recommended
60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
30 fps H.264 30 Mbps recommended
30 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 8 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps maximum

These are codec-specific recommendations in YouTube’s live settings table, not a measurement of your stream. Bitrate that matches the guidance cannot prove the encoded dimensions or frame rate: inspect those in the encoder and use Live Control Room’s detection, preview, and health messages as additional evidence.

Diagnose a warning or an unexpected result

YouTube’s stream status can include specific error messages and instructions. Read the message in Live Control Room and use it to identify the problem; health status is useful for delivery troubleshooting, but it is distinct from confirming exact incoming resolution and frame rate. The YouTube Live Streaming API also represents stream-health status separately from resolution and frame-rate properties. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

  • Ultra-low latency: Stay in the moment with ultra-low latency powered by USB 3.2 Gen 2, ensuring your broadcast and gameplay remain perfectly synchronized, delivering an immersive and responsive streaming experience.
  • The encoder is not set to 3840×2160 at 60 fps: correct the encoder’s outgoing resolution and frame rate. A camera set to 4K or 60 fps does not guarantee that the encoder sends those same values.
  • The custom stream key has a different manual resolution selected: check the expected resolution under Stream Resolution, but also verify the encoder itself. The key’s selection does not force the encoder to send matching dimensions.
  • Stream health shows a warning or error: read the accompanying message and follow its specific guidance. Check the encoder’s bitrate, keyframe interval, output settings, and connection against YouTube’s current recommendations; do not treat a warning as a resolution readout.
  • The preview looks soft or playback is below 4K: distinguish the received source from the viewer rendition. YouTube transcodes live video into multiple formats, and playback can depend on the viewer’s device, network, and selected quality. Check encoder output and stream detection separately.
  • The status is healthy, but you still need exact confirmation: do not infer 2160p60 from “healthy” alone. Cross-check the encoder output and, when available, inspect a viewer playback rendition while allowing for playback variability.
