Neither Vultr nor Hetzner is a documented universal winner for a continuous 4K60 YouTube loop. If a server only relays video that has already been encoded, compare the exact plan’s price, outbound-data allowance, overage policy, and location—and test the route to YouTube. If the server must render or encode the video, its CPU or GPU requirements are a separate question; the available provider documentation does not establish a safe machine configuration for that workload.
First decide what the server needs to do
A 4K60 stream can impose very different demands depending on where encoding happens. A relay sends an already encoded file or stream onward to YouTube. A rendering or encoding server must also decode and process video, then encode it in real time. The latter needs suitable compute and possibly hardware encoding; the documentation covered here does not identify an exact Vultr or Hetzner configuration that can reliably encode 4K60.
Vultr documents a Broadcaster deployment: remotely accessible OBS with GPU integration and a marketplace deployment workflow. That establishes an available deployment path, not that any particular plan will encode 4K60 reliably. Hetzner’s published cloud traffic allowances help with transfer planning, but do not establish encoding capacity either. For a pre-encoded loop, focus on network transfer and measured stability; for server-side encoding, verify the specific machine’s capabilities before committing.
What YouTube requires for a 4K60 live stream
YouTube’s live encoder settings support H.264, H.265, and AV1, RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). For 2160p at 60 fps, YouTube lists 35 Mbps for H.264. Its AV1 and H.265 columns list a 10 Mbps minimum and 40 Mbps maximum. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. It recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. For 4K, low latency is unavailable; the stream uses normal latency. These are YouTube-side behaviors and recommendations, not guarantees that a particular hosting route will remain stable.
Bandwidth is the main cost trap for an always-on relay
At a constant 35 Mbps, 30 days of uninterrupted outbound video is approximately 11.34 decimal TB. This is an arithmetic estimate: 35,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000,000. Actual transfer depends on the selected bitrate, audio, protocol overhead, and uptime. Recalculate using the bitrate you intend to send and the expected hours online; do not assume a provider’s included traffic covers an always-on 4K stream.

Vultr says outbound data transfer from cloud resources counts toward bandwidth usage, while inbound data is not metered against its limits. Check Vultr’s bandwidth guidance, then confirm the allowance and any excess terms for the exact plan and location before deployment.
Hetzner documents 20 TB of traffic for EU CX, CPX, and CAX cloud servers. Allowances for US and Singapore vary by plan. Its cloud overview says servers need a Primary IP to connect to the public internet. These are not universal allowances across all Hetzner servers or regions: verify the family, location, current excess policy, and current price for the server you are considering. The comparison is therefore conditional, not a performance ranking. Vultr has a documented OBS-based deployment path; Hetzner publishes location- and family-dependent traffic allowances. Neither fact proves which provider will be cheaper or more stable for your stream. Compare equivalent regions and machine roles, and measure the actual stream.
How to compare the two providers before you commit
- Choose the workload. Decide whether the server relays an already encoded stream or decodes, renders, and encodes the video. Do not price a relay machine as if it were proven suitable for real-time 4K60 encoding.
- Choose the region and exact plan. Compare machines intended for the same role and near the audience or YouTube ingest route you expect to use. Record the current price, included outbound transfer, and excess-data policy for that specific location and plan.
- Estimate monthly egress. Multiply your selected constant bitrate by the expected streaming time, convert bits to bytes, and account for audio and protocol overhead. Use the 35 Mbps estimate above only if that is your actual intended bitrate and uptime.
- Configure the encoder. Use a YouTube-supported codec and RTMP/RTMPS, set CBR, and use a two-second keyframe interval (never above four seconds). For H.264 at 2160p60, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps; follow the appropriate YouTube settings for the codec you choose.
- Test a representative stream. Include typical motion and audio, test before the public broadcast, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a sustained run. A brief successful connection does not establish month-long stability or predictable transfer charges.
- Review the bill and stream health. Check actual outbound usage against the plan allowance and watch for stream-health problems over a representative period before relying on the setup continuously.
Common failure points and what to check
- The stream exceeds its traffic allowance: compare observed outbound usage with the exact plan’s allowance and overage policy. A continuous stream can transfer many terabytes in a month even at the recommended H.264 bitrate.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: verify the outgoing bitrate is stable, CBR is enabled, and the keyframe interval follows YouTube’s recommendation. Test the route and configuration rather than assuming a provider’s advertised network capacity guarantees a good ingest path.
- The server cannot sustain encoding: a plan suitable for relaying may be inadequate for decoding and encoding 4K60. Confirm the chosen machine’s CPU/GPU and encoder support for the exact workload; the available documentation does not validate a particular configuration.
- The server cannot reach the public internet: on Hetzner, check that the cloud server has a Primary IP, which Hetzner identifies as necessary for public internet connectivity.
- Latency expectations are too low: YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K streams; 4K uses normal latency.
