To stream a local video to YouTube Live from Ubuntu Server, use FFmpeg to send the file in real time to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For H.264 at 3840×2160 and 60 fps, YouTube’s current guidance recommends 35 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. A genuine 4K60 broadcast also depends on the source file and on the server sustaining the required encoding and upload workload.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu Server that can access the source video and maintain a stable internet connection.
- FFmpeg with an encoder suited to your source and server. The installed build and hardware determine which encoders are available; no single encoder is guaranteed to handle 4K60 in real time on every server.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live Control Room, where you can retrieve the current RTMPS ingest destination and stream key.
- A source video whose actual resolution and frame rate you have checked. An upscale can produce a 3840×2160 output frame, but it cannot restore detail that was not present in a lower-resolution source.
YouTube recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” The RTMPS destination and stream key can change or be specific to the stream, so copy the current values from Live Control Room rather than assuming a fixed address.
Inspect the video and server first
Check what the file actually contains
Use ffprobe or another media inspector to check the video’s dimensions, frame rate, audio stream, and codecs. Confirm whether the file is 3840×2160 at 60 fps before treating it as native 4K60. Also check whether it has audio if the broadcast is expected to include sound.
Confirm FFmpeg encoder support and throughput
Check the encoders available in the FFmpeg build installed on the server. Choose software encoding or a supported hardware encoder based on what is available and whether it can sustain the intended 4K60 output. This is machine-specific: encoding 4K60 is compute-intensive, and an encoder’s presence alone does not prove it can keep up. Test the server under representative load, including its power and thermal limits where relevant.

Get YouTube’s current ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the broadcast you plan to run.
- Copy the current RTMPS server URL or ingest destination and the associated stream key.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to your channel.
- Use the settings YouTube currently presents for that broadcast, and verify the ingest health after sending a test stream.
Set the 4K60 video and audio parameters
YouTube Help lists 2160p (4K) at 60 fps and recommends 35 Mbps for H.264 ingest. Its encoder guidance calls for CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube also lists an AV1/H.265 bitrate range of 10–40 Mbps; the 35 Mbps figure is specifically the H.264 recommendation, not a universal bitrate for every codec or source.
Set the output resolution and frame rate to match the source and the intended broadcast. If the source is not 4K60, encoding it as 4K60 does not create original captured detail; it may also require additional processing. Set the encoder to CBR with a two-second keyframe interval for the H.264 target. Choose an audio configuration appropriate to the file and the YouTube settings shown for your stream.
For the upload connection, plan to sustain the outgoing stream bitrate continuously, with additional capacity for normal network variation and other traffic. YouTube recommends testing the connection but does not establish one universal upload-headroom multiplier. Test from the actual server and network you will use rather than relying only on a speed-test result from another device or time.

Send the file at real-time speed
A file can be read and encoded faster than its playback duration unless input pacing is applied. FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate; it is equivalent to -readrate 1. Use it as an input option before the corresponding -i option so the file is paced for live delivery.

The exact command depends on your installed FFmpeg build, selected encoder, source format, audio needs, and the current RTMPS destination and key. Do not paste a generic command without substituting and checking those values. The FFmpeg documentation establishes the real-time pacing behavior of -re, but the indefinite-loop syntax has not been verified here against a specific installed version. Check the documentation for your version and test the loop behavior before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
- Build a command for your chosen encoder and the current YouTube ingest destination and stream key.
- Place
-rebefore the input file’s-ioption to pace file input in real time. - Configure the encoder to match the source and target, including resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
- Use the RTMPS destination and key copied from Live Control Room.
- Test the command with a representative segment and confirm that YouTube receives the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, and stream health.
Test before running the broadcast unattended
YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio and monitoring stream-health messages. Check the live preview and ingest information to make sure motion is smooth, audio is present and synchronized, and the received resolution and frame rate match your target. A still image or short low-motion clip is not a sufficient test of sustained 4K60 encoding.

A process that starts successfully is not yet an unattended streaming service. If the stream must run continuously, separately design and validate process supervision, logging, restart behavior, and recovery from network interruptions. Do not assume that a basic FFmpeg command automatically reconnects or resumes correctly after a process or network failure.
Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube reports a low bitrate or unstable stream
Check the server’s sustained upload capacity and whether other traffic is using the connection. Confirm that the encoder is configured for the intended bitrate and CBR mode, then test again from the broadcast server. A connection that briefly reaches a speed-test target may still fluctuate under a long, continuous upload.

Inspect the source file and the encoder output separately. If the source is below 3840×2160 or 60 fps, an output setting cannot add the missing captured detail or original frames. If both are configured correctly, check YouTube’s ingest status and whether the server can sustain the encoding workload.

The picture stutters or falls behind
Check whether the selected encoder can sustain 4K60 on this server under load. Compare software and supported hardware encoding only after verifying actual throughput and image quality on the machine; no general performance result applies to every host. Also check for network instability and competing workloads.
The stream stops after an interruption
Determine whether FFmpeg exited, lost network access, or continued running without a healthy YouTube ingest. Inspect logs and validate restart and recovery behavior before depending on the setup. The command alone does not establish automatic recovery.
The video plays but there is no sound
Recheck the file’s audio stream and the encoder’s audio handling, then verify audio in YouTube’s live preview using a representative test. Do not assume that a valid video stream also contains or correctly routes audio.

Check YouTube’s content rules before looping a video
Technical acceptance by the ingest server does not establish permission to rebroadcast the material or guarantee that it qualifies for monetization. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content policies for your channel and intended use. A repeated loop is a delivery method, not an exemption from those rules.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want the Ubuntu machine and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video as a continuous YouTube stream from the cloud. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not broadcast from a camera or stream to other platforms.
- Nothing has to stay running at home; the stream continues from the cloud.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; each account gets one free day.
