Monetize, track, and block are policies a rights holder can apply to a standard YouTube Content ID claim: monetize means the rights holder monetizes the matched video, track means they monitor its viewership, and block makes it unavailable in the territories covered by the block. Monetize and track generally leave the video viewable. A live stream can be interrupted while it is happening, separately from a Content ID claim that may appear on its archive after the stream ends.

What do monetize, track, and block mean on YouTube?

These are Content ID policies chosen by rights holders for matched videos; they are not three settings a regular creator chooses for a claim on their own video. The effect can vary by country or region.

Policy What it means for a standard claimed video What to expect
Monetize The rights holder monetizes the matched video. In some cases, revenue is shared with the uploader. The video generally remains viewable, but the claim can affect who receives revenue.
Track The rights holder monitors viewership statistics. The video generally remains viewable while the rights holder tracks its audience.
Block The video is unavailable in the territories covered by the policy. The block may apply worldwide or only in particular countries or regions.

YouTube can apply different policies in different territories. If multiple partners have valid claims in the same territory, the more restrictive applicable action can prevail. See YouTube’s explanations of copyright claims and how Content ID policies are applied.

Can a copyright claim stop your YouTube live stream?

Yes, third-party content detected during a live stream can lead to a warning and a placeholder image; if the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. That live interruption is not the same event as a Content ID claim on an archived video.

  1. While you are live: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. Detection may trigger a warning and replace the stream with a placeholder.
  2. If the content is not addressed: YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream.
  3. After the stream: If you choose to archive it, a Content ID claim on that archive can be made after the stream ends.

YouTube describes these live-stream procedures in its guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Not every interruption should be described as a Content ID claim on an archive: live scanning and an after-the-fact archive claim are distinct processes.

Why might a live stream be interrupted even with a license?

A license does not necessarily prevent YouTube’s live systems from interrupting a stream. YouTube says that licensed creators may still need the rights holder to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. If you have a license and receive a live warning or interruption, contact the rights holder and ask whether your channel has been allowlisted. Keep the license and the relevant communication available when resolving the issue.

How standard video claims differ from live Content ID matching

YouTube also offers a separate live Content ID matching feature for eligible Content Manager partners. It is not the ordinary claim workflow for most creators. The feature requires global rights and exclusive ownership of the reference content used for matching.

Standard claim on a video or archive Partner live Content ID matching
When it applies A matched video; an archived live stream may be claimed after the broadcast ends and is archived. Matches a partner’s live stream against other live streams.
Available policies Monetize, track, or block, subject to territory and claim circumstances. Match policies can monetize or block. Track does not work for live matches.
What happens during a live match A standard archive claim is not the same as a real-time interruption. The match can warn the streamer and, if the content continues, replace or terminate the stream. The matching process does not create a Content ID claim.

YouTube states, “Track policies will not work for Content ID matching on live streams.” Read its guidance on using Content ID matching on live streams. Eligibility and rights requirements are specific to this partner feature.

Does a Content ID claim give you a copyright strike?

A Content ID claim by itself is not a copyright strike. Content ID claims are generated through YouTube’s matching system and usually affect the video, such as its monetization or availability. A copyright removal request is a separate process; a valid removal request can remove a video and result in a copyright strike. See YouTube’s overview of claims.

What happens to revenue if you dispute a claim?

If you dispute or appeal within five days of the claim, YouTube says revenue is held from the date of the original claim while the claimant reviews it. If you file later, revenue is held starting from the date of the dispute or appeal. After resolution, the held revenue is paid to the appropriate party. This affects revenue timing; it does not change the meaning of the claim’s monetize, track, or block policy. See YouTube’s guidance on monetization during copyright claim disputes.

What to do when YouTube flags your live stream

  1. Read the on-screen warning and check the stream. Identify whether YouTube is flagging content during the broadcast or showing a claim notice on an archived video; they have different timing and effects.
  2. If you have a license, contact the rights holder. Ask them to confirm that the license covers the content and that your channel is on their Content ID allowlist.
  3. For an archive claim, review the claim notice in YouTube Studio. Check the matched material, the territories and policy shown, and any available dispute information before deciding how to respond.
  4. Dispute only if you have a valid basis. A license, ownership, or another valid basis may be relevant, but a live interruption is not itself proof that an archive claim has been made.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded programming that you want to loop as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Cloud operation means nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It does not prevent copyright detection or replace the need for rights and any required allowlisting. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
