Open Graph tags belong in the active Shopify theme’s <head>, usually in an existing SEO or social-metadata snippet rendered by layout/theme.liquid. First check what your theme already outputs; edit or extend that code rather than adding a second set. For product pages, use product-aware title and image values, and confirm the rendered HTML before testing a social preview.
Before editing: check your theme’s existing Open Graph tags
Shopify themes commonly generate metadata from code included in the document head. Shopify’s SEO theme documentation says SEO metadata belongs inside <head>, and Shopify’s current Horizon theme uses a reusable snippet for SEO and Open Graph tags. Other themes can organize the same work differently, so treat those as examples, not filenames that every store must have. Shopify’s SEO metadata documentation and Horizon’s theme source are useful references.
- In Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- On the active theme, open the actions menu and choose Edit code. Duplicate the theme first so you can restore the original if needed.
- Inspect
layout/theme.liquidand any snippets it renders in the head. Search the theme code forog:title,og:description,og:url,og:type, andog:image. - If a complete set is already generated, adjust the existing source values. Do not add duplicate tags just because they are in a different snippet.
Use product-specific values in the theme head
If your theme does not already emit the tags you need, adapt its existing metadata snippet or add an equivalent block inside <head>. This illustrative Liquid pattern uses Shopify page values for general metadata, switches the Open Graph type on product pages, and uses the current page image when available:

{%- endif -%}This is an adapted teaching pattern, not a universal drop-in replacement for every theme’s metadata code. The current Horizon example uses page_title, page_description and canonical_url, and sets og:type to product for product pages. Its image output also prefixes the image URL with http:; inspect your own rendered output rather than copying an older URL filter or assuming that a relative URL is acceptable. The value used for og:image must resolve to a fully qualified, publicly accessible image URL.

What each tag should represent
og:title: the product title, or a suitable page title when the page is not a product.og:description: the page description, with an intentional fallback if it is empty.og:url: the page’s canonical URL, rather than a tracking or variant URL.og:type:productfor a product page; the general pattern above useswebsiteelsewhere.og:image: the intended product image or appropriate page image, with an absolute URL.
Choose the right product and fallback image
Shopify’s global page_image represents the current page. On product and collection pages it uses the featured image; for other pages, or pages without a featured image, Shopify uses the social sharing image. Shopify can automatically generate og:image, og:image:secure_url, og:image:width, and og:image:height from page_image when the theme does not include Open Graph image tags. See Shopify’s page_image reference.
For the store-wide fallback image, open Online Store > Preferences, then find Social sharing image and SEO, add or change the image, and save. Shopify documents this priority: theme-code images first, theme-settings images second, and the Preferences image as a fallback. Some themes only show images uploaded through their theme settings, so check both theme settings and Preferences if the fallback does not appear. A product’s featured image is usually the relevant source for that product page; the store-wide sharing image is not a substitute for setting the product image.

Preview and verify the rendered product page
- Open the product URL and view its rendered HTML source. In the document head, verify there is one intended set of Open Graph tags and that title, description, canonical URL, type, and image are correct.
- Open the image URL directly in a browser or otherwise confirm it is publicly reachable and is the image you expect for that product.
- Check the URL with a social platform’s supported preview inspector. Shopify lists Facebook’s crawler, LinkedIn Post Inspector, and Twitter Card Validator as options.
- If Facebook continues to show an old image after you change it, use Facebook Sharing Debugger to refresh its saved information for the link.
Social platforms can crawl and cache pages independently, and their preview layouts can differ. Shopify’s guidance supports refreshing Facebook’s saved link information; it does not establish a universal refresh time or guarantee identical previews across services. When to use theme settings, code, or help

Common problems and fixes
- Two different titles or images appear in the source: More than one snippet may be outputting metadata. Find all occurrences of the relevant tag names and maintain one intended source for each property.
- The wrong image appears on one product: Check that product’s featured image and inspect the actual
og:imagevalue in rendered source. A store-wide Preferences image is a fallback, not necessarily the product image. - The fallback image is missing: Check both theme settings and Online Store Preferences; some themes only use images uploaded in theme settings.
- The preview shows an old image after a change: Confirm the current source and public image URL first, then refresh Facebook’s saved information with Sharing Debugger if Facebook is the platform showing the stale preview.
- The tags do not appear at all: Confirm the edited file belongs to the published theme and is rendered in
<head>. Theme architecture varies, so the active theme may render its metadata through a snippet rather than inline intheme.liquid.
