If a ScreenshotMachine capture looks blurry, first check its requested width and height, device preset, and zoom. The API defaults to a small 120×90 image; its documented zoom range is 10% to 400%, and the service gives 200% as an example that produces an image twice as large as a 100% capture. These settings change capture size and rendering, but zoom cannot restore detail that is missing from a page’s source images.
1. Check the requested image dimensions
A screenshot can look soft simply because it is too small for where you display it. ScreenshotMachine’s API defaults to 120×90 pixels, so check the dimensions in your request rather than assuming a larger capture. The API documents widths from 100 to 1,920 pixels and numeric heights from 100 to 9,999 pixels; full is also available for full-page height. See ScreenshotMachine’s API documentation.
Set dimensions for the screenshot’s intended use. If it will be displayed larger than its captured pixel dimensions, the display may enlarge the image and make it appear less sharp. A full-page capture addresses page height, not necessarily the resolution of image assets within the page.
2. Adjust zoom, but know what it changes
The API documents zoom values from 10% through 400%. ScreenshotMachine describes this parameter as useful for capturing a high-resolution screenshot and gives zoom=200 as an example that makes the resulting image twice as large as one captured at 100%. The documentation also says zoom is ignored for screenshots smaller than typical device dimensions.

Try a higher zoom when you need a larger output, then inspect the resulting pixel dimensions and detail. Zoom affects the capture scale; it is not a documented way to recover detail absent from a page’s original image files. If the source image itself is low resolution, a larger capture may enlarge that softness too.
3. Match the device and viewport to the page
ScreenshotMachine documents desktop, phone, and tablet device choices. Its examples include desktop at 1024×768, phone at 480×800, and tablet at 800×1280. The generator documentation notes that modern pages can look different across device types. A page may use different layouts or select different images for different viewport sizes, so ensure the chosen device and dimensions match the result you expect. - For a desktop layout, use desktop emulation and a desktop-sized viewport.
- For a mobile layout, use phone emulation and phone-sized dimensions.
- When comparing captures, keep the device and viewport identical so they do not confound the comparison.
4. Use delay for late-loading content, not as a sharpness setting
The API’s default delay is 200 ms and the accepted values extend to 10,000 ms. ScreenshotMachine recommends considering a delay of 2,000 ms or more for long pages with images or animations. Extra wait time may allow content to finish loading, but the documentation does not describe delay as a resolution or sharpening control. Increase it only when content is visibly incomplete or still changing when captured.
5. Compare formats with settings held constant
The documented output formats are JPG, PNG, and GIF. The cited documentation does not establish one as universally sharpest or publish a screenshot-quality ranking. For a useful comparison, capture the same URL and page state with the same dimensions, device, zoom, delay, and cache setting; change only the format, then compare the actual files at the size you intend to use.

6. Rule out an older cached capture
The cacheLimit parameter sets the acceptable age of a cached image from 0 to 14 days. Set cacheLimit=0 to request a fresh screenshot when you suspect an older capture is being returned. ScreenshotMachine’s pricing FAQ says screenshots are cached for 14 days and cached loads are not billed; that cache policy is distinct from image sharpness itself. 7. Troubleshoot in a controlled order
- Inspect the output dimensions. Check the request and resulting file. If relying on defaults, replace 120×90 with dimensions suited to the intended display, within the documented limits.
- Check the device and viewport. Select the intended device type and compatible dimensions; a different layout can use different page imagery.
- Test zoom. Try a value within 10–400%, noting that the API says zoom is ignored below typical device dimensions.
- Wait only if the page is unfinished. Increase delay for late images or animation, not as a presumed fix for resolution.
- Request a fresh capture. Use
cacheLimit=0if freshness is in doubt. - Compare formats. Change only JPG, PNG, or GIF while holding other settings constant.
If the result remains soft, include the exact request settings and output file when contacting support. The documented controls do not identify the cause of an individual blurry capture, so avoid assuming a particular setting is responsible without checking the file and request.

Will increasing the delay improve image resolution?
No resolution benefit is documented for delay. It can give late-loading page content or animation more time to finish before capture.
Can zoom recreate detail missing from the webpage’s source image?
