To test a link preview before posting, publish the page’s intended title, description, and image, then check the URL separately in LinkedIn’s Post Inspector and Facebook’s Sharing Debugger. For X, inspect the post composer’s preview and check X’s current help guidance; a current official refresh workflow is not established here. A preview tool can reveal stale or missing metadata, but no third-party preview guarantees how every platform will render a card.
Why does a link preview show an old image?
Social platforms may cache an earlier fetch of a URL. LinkedIn explicitly notes that when a URL has been shared before, its cached image may appear again. First ensure the live page is publicly fetchable and that the intended metadata is already published; an inspector can only report what its crawler can retrieve.
Link previews commonly draw on Open Graph metadata, including a page title, description, and image. A checker can help diagnose what a page exposes, but its rendering is an approximation—not proof that Facebook, LinkedIn, and X will display identical cards. Cross-platform preview guidance
How to test a link preview on each platform
LinkedIn: use Post Inspector
- Publish the updated page and confirm that it is publicly reachable.
- Open LinkedIn’s Post Inspector and enter the URL you plan to share.
- Review the fetched preview information, including the image. If it is stale, use the inspector’s refresh function and check the result again.
- After changing the page, inspect the URL again before creating a new post.
LinkedIn says the refreshed preview applies to new posts, not existing ones: “The changes you make will only affect the URL’s preview image and information for new posts that include it. The preview for any existing posts with this URL will remain the same.”

Facebook: use Sharing Debugger
- Make sure the page and its intended metadata are live and publicly fetchable.
- Enter the URL in Meta’s Sharing Debugger.
- If the displayed data is old, the cross-platform guidance describes using “Scrape Again” to request a new fetch for Facebook and Messenger.
- Review the resulting preview, then check it again after any further page changes.
The Meta steps and button label above are reported by cross-platform preview guidance; current first-party Meta documentation was not available to verify the exact interface or behavior. Treat the label as subject to change.
X: inspect the composer preview
- Open a post composer and enter the URL to see the card X proposes to display.
- Check X’s current help information if you need a specific refresh or cache-clearing action; do not assume a refresh in another platform updates X.
- After editing the page, inspect the composer preview again before posting.
A recent third-party guide reports that X’s standalone Card Validator has been retired and recommends checking the composer preview. That status and workflow have not been confirmed here by current official X documentation. Third-party guide on X’s validator status

How to refresh a preview across platforms
Refresh each destination independently. A successful fetch in LinkedIn does not establish that Facebook or X has fetched the updated page, and a generic metadata checker cannot certify any platform’s exact card layout. LinkedIn explicitly limits its refresh effect to future posts; existing posts keep their prior preview.
- Update and publish the page metadata before requesting a fresh fetch.
- Use the destination platform’s own preview or inspector where available.
- Recheck after changes rather than relying on a result generated before the latest edit.
- For a post already published, do not expect LinkedIn’s Post Inspector refresh to revise its existing card.

Does refreshing a link preview update posts that are already live?
On LinkedIn, no. Its Post Inspector refresh applies to new posts; existing posts retain their earlier preview.

Can one preview checker confirm the card will look the same on all three platforms?
No. A general-purpose renderer is diagnostic, not a guarantee of Facebook, LinkedIn, or X’s exact presentation.
