If YouTube says “too many concurrent broadcasts” when you start a stream, the exact cause and a guaranteed fix are not established by YouTube’s encoder setup guide. Check that your encoder is connected to the stream selected in Live Control Room, then follow YouTube’s documented start sequence. If the message persists, ask YouTube support to diagnose your specific account and stream rather than assuming a particular cause.

What the message means—and what is not confirmed

YouTube’s official guide for creating a live stream with an encoder does not mention “too many concurrent broadcasts” or document an error-specific fix. It therefore does not establish that the message is caused by a stale stream, an account limit, your encoder, a capture card, or any other particular condition. Do not treat any of those possibilities as confirmed.

The practical next step is to verify the documented encoder setup and start sequence. If those are correct and the error remains, YouTube needs to diagnose the account- or stream-specific condition.

Check the encoder setup in YouTube Live Control Room

YouTube supports live streaming by webcam, mobile device, or encoder. An encoder may be software or standalone hardware. For an encoder stream, YouTube’s documented workflow is to select or create the stream in Live Control Room and enter that stream’s URL and key in the encoder.

  1. Confirm live streaming is enabled. If this is your first time streaming, YouTube says enablement may take up to 24 hours. That is an enablement delay, not a confirmed explanation or resolution time for the concurrent-broadcast message.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Select the stream you intend to broadcast, or create a stream there.
  3. Use the matching connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder. Check that the encoder is configured for the stream currently selected in Live Control Room.
  4. Start the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait until its preview appears in Live Control Room before selecting Go live.
  5. Recheck the message. If the setup matches YouTube’s documented flow but the same message appears, the guide does not provide a further error-specific procedure.

These steps are YouTube’s general encoder workflow, not a documented cure for this particular error. The official instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

If the error persists

  • Note which stream is selected in Live Control Room and whether it is scheduled or being started immediately.
  • Confirm that the encoder is using the URL and key for that selected stream, and that the encoder has been started.
  • Contact YouTube Help or the YouTube Help Community with the exact message and the relevant stream details. Ask for account- and stream-specific guidance; the encoder guide does not identify the trigger or prescribe a recovery action.

Avoid buying or replacing an encoder, capture card, or other production equipment solely to resolve this message: YouTube’s guide does not say that changing equipment fixes a concurrent-broadcast condition.

Two YouTube timing details that are easy to misread

  • First-time enablement: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. This is not a stated concurrency limit or a promised wait time for this error.
  • Automatic archiving: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This describes archiving, not the cause of the message or how to clear it.
